Disability Rights a fight for equality
What can we learn about the past civil rights struggles to make a difference today? The problem statement we have been working on is that some disabled people can’t execute tasks that seem easy and commonplace to us.
Most Important Questions How can a house be made disability friendly? How is a website laid out? How can a nonprofit organization make money to build and maintain a disability friendly complex? How could we make our complex known? How would residents get exercise in the complex?
Most important research Houses are easier to access for wheelchair users when they include ramps, wide hallways, single story design, grab bars, and step free showers A website should have a navigation panel, search engine, easy to read font, and a sleek design Fundraisers consist of anything from bake offs to runs and car washes. Billboards, press releases, links from other websites, shop windows, and TV or radio adds can help in advertising A wheelchair basketball game or a course to roll around can help disabled people exercise
Our Solution To solve our problem, we will build a complex that will house disabled people. The complex will include ramps, grab bars, single story design, a gym and track, and soft curves and corners. Also, a website will publicize the complex. Reciprocal links such as banners and forums will gather hits on our website. We hope that this website will raise publication and inspire others to do as we did.
Pros of our solution Houses disabled people Offers exercise to disabled people Disability friendly atmosphere Offers care to disabled Raises disability awareness Inspires other to do the same
Cons of our solution Expensive Needs staff Lonely for disabled people Nonprofit It would be hard to evacuate the disabled in case of an emergency
Global Disability Issues There are 650 million disabled people worldwide which is about 10% of the world’s population The average employment rate for the average UK working age population is 74% and 47% for all people with a disability 39% of buses are wheelchair accessible; 46% of trains are fully accessible and 29% of the 253 tube stations are ’step-free’
CSI Color: Symbol: Image: yellow We choose this color because disabled people’s lives should be brighter and yellow is a bright color. We choose this symbol because this is a disability friendly ramp which will help with what we plan to do in the complex. We choose this image because we hope that our actions will inspire others to do the same- a domino effect
I used to think, but now I think Used to think There isn’t much discrimination against disabled people Disabled people are rare in our world Disabled people can find jobs easily Now I think Disabled people are still being discriminated against There are many disabled people in the world Disabled people can’t find jobs as easily as you would think
