The funeral order of service following a cremation may be presented in a similar fashion to other funerals, except that the deceased may have already been cremated and so there will be an urn and other memorial keepsakes in place of a coffin.
And while a traditional funeral service may take place anywhere from three to five days following the death, memorial services after a cremation can be planned for months after the death as the deceased has probably already been cremated.
There are a lot of reasons as to why a loved one’s family may plan a memorial service instead of a traditional funeral, but regardless of the type of service, it’s usually a good idea to start with different types of funeral program templates to help plan the service.
How to Design Funeral Order of Service Programs
Sometimes the printed programs are included with the costs of the service and you’ll have a few selections to choose from. But if you want to design your own to better reflect the life of the deceased, they are usually 8.5″ by 11″ sheets of 24# copy paper, either printed on both sides and folded in half, or tri-folded like a brochure.
You could also design your own one-page funeral program template, printed only on one side, and rolled up like a scroll. This is a nice idea if the service is going to be short.
Any design is fine, as long as you choose something that allows for the amount of information you need to include in your program.

Funeral Order of Service Program Templates
Whether you’re planning a f uneral or a memorial service, f uneral order of service program templates will help
you get through the service planning process a lot easier than if you’re starting f rom scratch without really
knowing what to do.
And f rom experience, I can say that sometimes it can be
devastating trying to plan a service when the pain of grief still
seems insurmountable, and you’re wondering how you’re going to
go on.
If the service is being held at a church, the minister may have a
standard f uneral order of service that is used as a religious
tradition, which may help tremendously and ease some of the
stress of planning.
The f uneral order of service f ollowing a cremation may be
presented in a similar f ashion to other f unerals, except that the
deceased may have already been cremated and so there will be an
urn and other memorial keepsakes in place of a cof f in.
And while a traditional f uneral service may take place anywhere
f rom three to f ive days f ollowing the death, memorial services
af ter a cremation can be planned f or months af ter the death as
the deceased has probably already been cremated.
There are a lot of reasons as to why a loved one’s f amily may plan a memorial service instead of a traditional
f uneral, but regardless of the type of service, it’s usually a good idea to start with dif f erent types of f uneral
program templates to help plan the service.
Funeral Program Template
If you’re not planning a religious service that requires a standard f uneral order of service, you can still use a
f uneral program template to prepare the service.
Greeting by the minister, the funeral home director or other host. This will include an opening message
on behalf of the f amily, thanking those who have attended to pay their respects.
At this time, directions may also be given as to how to come to the f ront to pay respects if there is a cof f in, or
maybe to touch, place a f lower, or say a short prayer at the cremation memorial urn.
The host may also decide to announce a time schedule f or meeting f or a reception af ter the service, along
with where to f ind the f uneral programs f or those who haven’t already received one.
The Eulogy. Sometimes the f amily members of the deceased
have requested a specif ic person to present the eulogy in
place of or in addition to a member of the clergy.
For example, an especially close f riend, f avorite sibling or
2. another member of the f amily may be asked to speak about
the loved one.
Or maybe a coach or college prof essor that the loved one
was especially close to may present a special eulogy.
This presentation may also include scripture readings or a
secular recounting of events in the loved one’s lif e but not
necessarily f rom a religious aspect.
Offers of remembrance from guests. The f uneral order
of service usually includes time f or f riends, associates, coworkers, neighbors, anyone in attendance, to
present a story or special moment that was shared with the deceased. Some presenters also express their
heartf elt condolences to the f amily personally at this time.
Funeral Service Music. From most of the f uneral and memorial services I’ve attended, it’s unusual to walk
into the area where the service is being conducted and not hear any music playing in the background.
If the service is being perf ormed at the f uneral home or a church, there may be a specif ic selection of
traditional solemn f avorites that will be played on a continuous loop throughout the service. Those musical
selections won’t normally appear in the f uneral program.
However, if the f amily has planned special music to be played, f or example by a guitarist, pianist or other
instrumental, this music and the f riend or f amily member who perf orms it, should be included in the program.
Closing presentation. Traditionally, the closing presentation of ten includes inf ormation about the interment
and an open invitation by the f amily to attend a reception f ollowing interment.
What to Include in Funeral Order of Service Programs
Many times there will be programs either handed out or available to pick up as guests arrive at the church or
f uneral home. These f olded pamphlets include the f uneral order of service.
In addition to the items mentioned above in the f uneral order of service, f uneral programs may also include the
location of interment and inf ormation about the reception that is being held f or guests.
There is of ten a special poem or verse and a photo printed on the programs and they may include an obituary
as well. There are some f uneral program templates that provide an area where certain people are mentioned
such as pall bearers, soloists, and musicians who have played special pieces.
