3. Introduction
The rapid growth of information and communication technologies
have gave rise to the evolution of several new jargons like paperless
society, electronic resources, portal / gateway and global digital
library.
In the present day context , all types of libraries viz: academic,
public and special are not only providing printed resources to their
library users rather they provide printed, electronic as well as other
Internet resources like e-books and databases for fulfilling the day to
day academic and research requirements of the library users.
The present study projects the effectiveness of sources and services
of college libraries of South Assam which are affiliated to Assam
University, Silchar. The study also examines the effective channels
through which information is accessed.

8. Delimitation of the Study
• The present study was delimited to Library Users of ten
selected college libraries of Barak Valley, South Assam
which are affiliated to the Assam University, Silchar.
The data pertaining to the study were collected through
the questionnaires; interview-schedule and personal
observation of the investigators.
The reliability of the facts depends on the honesty of
the respondents.The socioeconomic status and nature of
the libary users have not been taken into consideration
which might have affected the findings.

• Sampling
• The stratified random sampling technique was
used to collect the data from the population.
• The present study includes 400 respondents
using Internet drawn from ten college library
users of Barak Valley of South Assam which
are affiliated to Assam University, Silchar.

• Design of Questionnaire
• To elicit the opinion of the respondents for
Internet Awareness , Internet Skills and
Information Searching Pattern of the college
library users, the questionnaire comprising of 18
questions was designed.
• The questionnaire was distributed the respondents
as per the requirement of the objectives of the
present study.

• Administration and Collection of Questionnaire
• The questionnaire has been distributed to 400 College
Library Users comprises of undergraduate students,
faculty members, staff and research scholars.
• The respondents were requested them to fill the
questionnaire as per their convenience and returned the
questionnaire to the investigators as early as possible.
• The filled up questionnaires have been collected from
the respondents for the data analysis and interpretation.

processed.
• The collected data has been tabulated and in
the present paper results have been shown in

34. Suggestions and Recommendations
• There is an urgent need to automate the college libraries
as early as possible for the modernisation of library
services;
• ICT trained and skilled library professionals / staff should
be recruited for the betterment of the library services;
• The College Authority should conduct training programme
for Information Communication Technology (ICT
application) / Internet awareness, access of e-resources, E-
Books, E-journals for the College Library users and they
should be encouraged to take part in the E-Resource

Recommendations
• More computers/Terminals with latest configurations
should be made available in the library so that the users
can use Internet, e-resources and e-journals and other

Centre, Ahmedabad, the campus wide local area
network should be strengthen and made available in the
different academic departments, computer

36. Conclusion
• A rapid change in information seeking behaviour and use of Internet for On-
line access of E-resources have become the vital part of various information
needs;
• The On-line journals ie e-journals are the most important for the research
community. It is proved that the on-line journals / web resources save the times
of the users.
• This study helps to improve the facilities and services related to facility of
providing ICT and Internet Literacy Programme access to various Internet
resources/ On-line access / Web-Resources. for
• If proper training is imparted to the college library users , the performance of
the Undergraduate students, research scholars and college teachers of Barak
Valley of South Assam in particular and Assam / N E Region general will be
improved for making them ICT and Internet Literate for effectively accessing
to Internet/ Web Resources for their academic and reseach work.
