Today we are going to introduce you to a new offering from KPI that enables customers to use OBIEE and BI Apps to meet their FSG reporting needs.
In order to do that, first we’ll quickly lay the foundation by discussing what FSG reporting in EBS is..I know most people in this call are very familiar with FSG reporting in EBS, so we won’t spend a lot of time on it.
We will then discuss why customers may want to perform FSG reporting in OBIA and the various options that are available without this KPI offering and their limitations. We will highlight the main advantages of this KPI offering.
We will follow that up with a brief demo of some sample reports that were migrated from the EBS vision database.
In the end, we hope to have plenty of time for a Q&A to answer as many questions as possible.
FSG stands for Financial Statement Generator.
FSG is a tool within Oracle E-Business Suite to provide reporting for such financial docs as the income sheet, balance sheet, cash flow statements, income tax papers, and more.
As far as data manipulation, the features are pretty limited. There is the ability to export tab delimited data into spreadsheet applications like MS-Excel.

This slide is to review the concepts in FSG
Rowsets, Column Sets, Content Sets etc.
Can be broken into 2 slides. One with the sample of an FSG report (I.e., a Financial Statement such as a Balance sheet or an Income Statement(
and another with the actual components. We can come up with a better example of an FSG report ,if necessary.
First of all when we say FSG reports, we mean those Financial Reports that are usually Financial statements (an income statement, a balance sheet, a cash flow statement etc.) that are usually defined by companies one row at a time. The data for FSG reports is usually the GL Balances table. Each row is usually defined by set of accounts or a node in an account hierarchy. Rows can also be defned as calculations based on other rows. For eg.., In the example that we are showing, Revenues are made up of a total of Landscaping Fees and Finance Charge Income. Gross Profit is defined as Revenues – Cost of Sales, while cost of sales itself is probably defined as a set of accounts.
These rows are then combined with columns (Month-to-date, Year-to-date, Quarter-to-date) etc. to define a report.
EBS uses the terms Rowset, columnset to describe these items. In addtion, EBS Fnancial statement generator has concepts such as ContentSet, Roworder and Dsiplay sets that control formatting and filtering of the reports.
So. What are the main advantages of using FSG reports in EBS
- it is very flexiible. You can perform different types of formatting and grouping to meet almost any need
- It is real-time, no ETL lag time. But that comes with sometimes very poor performance (some customers wait for an hour or more to generate some of these reports)
Also, at many customer sites there are only 2-3 people who know how to define and maintain FSGs correctly creating severe bottlenecks.
They are also NOT interactive. If you wanted to look at the detail for one single line, you still have to print/run the entire report and pour through sometmes 50 pages to fnd the right detail you were looking for

The key point is that Real Time BI is another tool in the reporting toolkit.
As always, the important point is to use the right tool for the job!
So before we talk about how we can enable these FSG reports (specifically to overcome some of the limitations we’ve higlighted) , in BI Apps, I will briefly mention what is BI Apps.
As a background, when we speak of the Oracle BI Apps, we’re referring to those Analytics modules available from Oracle and inegrated with oracle bi enterprise edition as the reporting platform.
Each of these comes pre-seeded with a variety of traditional analytic reports that meet various functional needs for customers.
In this case we are specifically concerned with Financial Analytics, because Financial Statements are generated from Financial Analytics Tables
Before exploring he KPI FSG Reporting in Financial Analytics solution, let’s explore what options are currently available for this type of reporting in OBIEE in general and Financial Analytics in particular.
Instead of reading this slide, I will go through these options one at a time and show some screenshots of how each option looks and what the advantages / disadvantages are.
The second option is a sample available in the BI Apps OOTB reports. Every one of the rows in your Balance sheet (for e.g., Cash, Accounts Receivable or Total Assets) or other Financial reports can be defined as a metric in the OBIEE metadata. These metrics are then used as columns in a report and then pivoted to be formatted as rows.
But with this technique, the OBIEE developer and Adminisitrator needs to be involved with every change and there are also limitations on what you can show in the columns (you can’t do budget vs actual and variance type of reporting for e.g.,)
One additional option that many customers use for Financial Reporting is Hyperion ESSBASE and the its integration with OBIEE. This will provide good performance and flexibility in definiing the report calculations. But this is not available OOTB with Financial Analytics and custom work is need to design/build/load and maintain the cube from Financial Analytics tables.
A third option that is available in OBIEE with 11g is the use of Selection steps /custom groups and Calculated Items to construct each row of the Financial report. This method is very flexible and will allow you to achieve almost all the features that you can achieve with traditional FSG reports. However, these reports are hard to performance tune and requires some complex report building skills in OBIEE
In order to overcome some of the drawbacks of all these traditional options. KPI Partners has developed a new solution to enable FSG reporting in Financial Analytics
Since many customers have already developed FSG Reports in EBS, we have developed a way for customers to migrate those definitions to Financial Analytics and take advantage of all integration and performance gains that BI provides.
==================
FSG Reporting For Financial Analytics
KPI has developed an application designed to migrate complex FSG reports from Oracle E-Business Suite into Financial Analytics.
What is Oracle Financial Statement Generator (FSG)?
FSG is a report-building tool for Oracle E-Business Suite used for creating financial statements such as the income statement, trial balance, balance sheet, and cash flow statement. FSG reports are complex to build, difficult to maintain, and do not provide the modern analytical capabilities that exist with Oracle Business Intelligence.
Overview
KPI Partners has developed a solution that enables FSG reporting on the Oracle Business Intelligence platform. KPI’s FSG Reporting for Financial Analytics migrates existing FSG hierarchies and calculations into the Financial Analytics module of Oracle BI Applications so users can build interactive FSG reports with OBIEE.
Using the solution enables any organization to reduce the time and effort involved with migrating FSG reports into a single enterprise standard reporting platform.
Compliance
KPI’s FSG Reporting for Financial Analytics is fully integrated with Oracle Financial Analytics and is compliant with standards for Oracle ETL and BI metadata.
Integration
KPI’s FSG Reporting for Financial Analytics is a natural extension of Oracle Financial Analytics and Oracle E-Business Suite’s Financial Statement Generator. FSG Reporting for Financial Analytics includes a proprietary data model that stores the complex hierarchy, calculations, and drill-down capability required for interactive FSG reporting using OBIEE.
The FSG Reporting for Financial Analytics data model links directly with the Financial Analytics data model, allowing seamless navigation and drill-through analysis of financial data.
Business Benefits
Financial statements available on a single enterprise standard reporting platform.
Financial reports that are easy-to-build and easy-to-maintain.
Interactive drill-down and navigation into enterprise financial information.
Visibility into the building blocks of complex FSG reporting.
Key Functionality
FSG Reporting for Financial Analytics is an exclusive application extension to Financial Analytics designed to store all the information required to build and use complex FSG reports and features the following functionality:
Storage for FSG report templates, hierarchies, and calculations via a pre-built data model extension to Financial Analytics.
Pre-built extract-transform-load (ETL) from E-Business Suite (R11 & R12) to the FSG Reporting for Financial Analytics data model using Informatica and DAC
Pre-built metrics in Financial Analytics OBIEE metadata to support all standard FSG metrics Ability to build FSG reports easily by leveraging OBIEE on Financial Analytics Seamless navigation and drill-down into detailed financial data
So what do you get when you install this KPI offering.
First of all, you get a data model that is specially designed to support this type of reporting. It is conformed to the BI Apps dimensions and fact tables and it is very easy to enhance the performance using aggregates because the model follows all the traditional best practices of warehouse design.
You get Informatica ETL mappings to migrate FSG metadata into this new data model. We support both R11 and R12 instances
OOTB we provide the OBIEE metadata necessary to support this type of reporting and all 30 columns that EBS FSG considers standard columns (such as MTD , YTD, QTD actuals, the budget variations of those measures and the corresponding variances).
We also provide some template reports that allow you to view the FSG report definitions and I’ll show what that is during the demo.
We also provide some sample reports to demonstrate how FSG reports can be built using this data model.
Before jumping into the demo, I’d like to take 2 minutes to summarize the various options we’ve discussed and how they compare to the KPI solution we are discussing today.
As you can see, we’ve tried to address all the features that customers regularly look for when they build FSG reports and the previous options all had holes in one or more areas.
The other question that we get often is why should we even do FSG reporting in Financial Analytics instead of EBS. I would highlight the fact that not only can we gain significant performance gains (at some of our customers we’ve been able to ishow that reports that take an hour or more in EBS run in less then a minute in OBIEE). I also would point to the fact that the EBS FSG reports are extremely static , often very long. With this solution you get all the advantages of filtering, drilling to detail (perhaps upto the subledger detail if you choose), and so you can zoom in on the specific issues as opposed to pouring thorugh pages and pages of FSG report detail from EBS.
The only area that we continue to recommend EBS FSG reporting is when real-time reporting is absolutely mandatory. Maybe that is 10%-15% of your use cases. We have found that even those percentages can be brought down by some selective micro-etl of GL balances to the warehouse (By micro-etl I mean, running a subset of your ETL process multiple times during the day)
The key point is that Real Time BI is another tool in the reporting toolkit.
As always, the important point is to use the right tool for the job!
