3. Introduction :
Russi Mody (17 January 1918 –16 May 2014)
was a former Chairman and Managing Director
of Tata Steel and a leading member of the Tata
Group.
Mody had patrician lineage. After his
education at Britain's Harrow School and Christ
Church, Oxford, Russi Mody joined Tata Steel in
1939, rising steadily up the ranks - from a shop
floor trainee at Jamshedpur Steel Works to
chairman and managing director.

Studied first at Harrow School (England)
Graduation as a history student from Christ
Church College, Oxford
During his study of history, he became so fond
of Napoleon Bonaparte that the French
dictator became his ultimate role model.

7. A Great Personality :
Mody was popular with workers; he took good
care of them.
1 day Mody was visiting a plant in where he was
superintendent. “He just visited the workers’
toilets, found them neat, clean and hygienic,
patted 1 worker’s back, said ‘Well done’, and
left. He believed that if you took care of the
workers, they would take care of the company.
8. But that did not mean he gave in to all their
demands; He knew when and where to draw
the line.
He believed that the organizational rules should
be made such that each and every worker
agrees with them.
9. Career :
joined Tata Steel in 1939
promoted to the position of Director of
Personnel in 1953.
Position of the Director of Raw Materials in
1965.
In 1970, he was appointed as Director of
Operations.
10. Became Joint Managing Director in 1972.
Retired From TATA Steel in March,1993.
Set up the famous Tata Football Academy
in Jamshedpur in 1987.

12. Achievements :
Recorded name in the history for being Joint
MD of Tata Steels for almost 53 years.
Appointed as Joint Chairman of Indian Airlines
and Air India by then President P.V Narsingh
Rao.
He was awarded with Padma Bhushan in year
1989 for his exemplar contribution to the Indian
industry.
13. During his decades tata steel capacity increased
from 8 lakhs tonnes a year to 30 lakhs.
He was forerunner of the technological
turnaround at tata steel making it benchmark for
the rest steel industry to follow.

15. The values that he has always admired and
tried to imbibe and propagate among his co-workers
are candour,humility, compassion,
consistent hard work, determination, sincerity
and punctuality.
He had served the company as its Chairman
and Executive Director for almost a decade.
When Russy joined TISCO in 1939, the
company
was in its infancy. Today, Tata Steel is at
Rs17000-crore colossus which indeed is
remarkable.
