Dear Educators,
I created this project when I was a third grade
math and science teacher. Since then, I’ve taught
other grades and subjects (3rd and 5th grade
reading and writing), but this project remains one
of my favorites. The Energy Robot has had many
improvements and revisions since it was originally
posted in 2014.
I hope your students love this project as an
introduction or review of forms of energy. Based
on feedback over the years, teachers have used
this project as a final assessment as well as a
quick review. Most educators take 1-2 sessions
(lesson blocks) to complete the project, but be
sure to add time for students to share their
robot creations! Check out the next page for
more information about each component.
After creating this resource, I went on to design
and make similar art and writing projects to
assess understanding of landforms, animal
adaptations, inherited traits, weather, and simple
machines!.
I hope your students love using their imaginations
to create their own energy robot!
Please let me know if you have any questions. I’d
be happy to help!
My email is krista@theknittedapple.com.

The energy pictures can be used as a
full page (displayed for students), or
cut into cards. Use the pictures to
get students thinking about the
different forms of energy.
For the final
project,
students redraw
their robot and
color it in! You
can choose the
page shown here
with the art and
writing on one
page, or
separate art

pages for
students that

I created
my example
by sketching
my robot on
the planning

(see example
on previous

I used a
pencil to
draw the
robot, then
traced over
the pencil
lines with a
black flair
pen. I
colored in
the robot
with colored
pencils. Last,
I referenced
my planning
page to
write about
the forms
of energy.

5. Forms of Energy Review
What forms of energy do these objects produce? Can you think of more than one form of energy for each?

6. My Energy Robot Planning Page
The robot you design must produce at least three
forms of energy. First, choose three forms of energy
from the list below. Then explain the specific feature of
your robot for each form of energy you chose.

Draw your robot inside the box and label the forms of
energy. Make this robot colorful, detailed, and your best
work. In your writing, explain the specific features of
your robot, including the forms of energy your robot
produces. Use correct capitalization, punctuation, and
sentence structure.
