Tsunami of 2004 By: Brendan Daly and Andrew Benedict Tsunami of Indonesia By: Brendan Daly and Andrew Benedict
Earthquake Was a 9.0 magnitude earthquake under the Indian ocean Near the west coast of Indonesia The tectonic plates let out an enormous amount of water This sent a powerful shock waves in every direction The earthquake was the result of the siding of the India plate under the section called Burma plate
Earthquake The earthquake’s energy was equal to 23,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs. The earthquake has been building for hundreds of years, but for some reason it suddenly unleashed on December 26, 2004. The earthquake effected areas within more than 600 miles. Largest magnitude in 40 years.
How a Tsunami Occurs An earthquake occurs under the ocean, which displaces massive amounts of water Can occur in both shallow and deep water Most destruction occurs in shallow water Causes large destructive waves Total energy of tsunami equals five megatons of TNT (twice the amount of explosive used in World War II)
How a Tsunami Occurs (cont.) Takes up to seven hours to reach land from the earthquake Victims were taken by surprise First warning of is when the earthquake happens Ocean recedes making very shallow water People thought that they could go in the shallow water, but the huge wave came and destroyed them
How Tsunami Arrivies Can arrive at coastline in one-two days Can arrive rapidly or slowly A warning sign is when the water goes out to sea and concedes, followed by a sudden enormous body of water (huge wave) Another warning sign is when the sea rises very quickly, instead of receding This means that the warnings are hard to notice
Tsunami More than 150,000 people died or went missing 1,000,000 people became homeless Most destructive tsunami in history Tsunami was 1.24 miles high Caused destruction in 11 countries Killed people 2,000km away from the shoreline
