3. “Immaterial aspects of fashion will become
celebrated as raw materials become scarcer.
The material components of fashion will be treated
with greater reverence and respect for the same
reason.”
-Kate Fletcher
4. “I do not think the eco/organic/fair trade
movement is a trend. I think it is the
beginning of a major shift in consciousness
in the fashion business.”
Julie Gilhart, fashion director and Senior Vice President of Barneys, NYC

14. Bangladesh Fashion Industry
• $19 USD Billion Industry
• Approx 4 million people
• Of which 3.4 million are women
• 78% of Exports are Garment related
• Over 5000 Factories
• A high level of non compliance
to paying a living wage.
15. Garment workers are asking for $104.72 a month, which would
almost double the current minimum. To get to that number, they
created a monthly budget that, they figure, is the bare minimum.
This would increase the cost of
a T- Shirt by approx 20 cents
Do you think you could still afford to
Buy one ?
As a result, on December 1st, 2013
the minimum wage rose to
$68.00 a month ,
amazingly an increase
Of 77% from existing minimum
($14 per month).
39. Fast facts:
Approximately 50,000 tonnes of fabric are wasted each year during
manufacture, which goes straight to landfill.
Around 40% of world fabric
production is cotton.
Cotton uses approximately 8000 litres of water for 1kilo of cotton.
Pesticides used on cotton harm people, wildlife and the environment.
These pesticides can poison farm workers, drift into neighboring
communities, contaminate ground and surface water and kill beneficial
insects and soil micro-organisms.
88. “Zero Waste Fashion is part of a larger
picture of beauty for everyone, that
Fashion is capable of being the source of.”
- Timo Rissanen

Talk about Bangladesh incident. Over 1000 people died. SHOW VIDEO : www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdGUNZOBuhc
*The Rana Plaza building, collapsed a few weeks ago, in Bangladesh, killing more than 1,100 people. A call was made by IndustriaALL Global Union, for all companies making clothing in Bangladesh to sign an agreement to improve working conditions, wages & safety in all factories...
There was a recent incident at a large fashion factory in Bangladesh.
Sadly, this is not an irregular occurrence for people working in extremely unsafe working conditions in many countries such as China, India and Bangladesh.
Does any one know about what happened in Bangladesh?

The Social Studio fashion label offers limited-edition signature pieces, each woven with its own story.
They train refugess with fashion design and production skills to design their own collections and manufacture on-site, high quality garments using hand-dyeing and finishing techniques. All their garments are ethically made using only reclaimed and up-cycled materials gathered from the local fashion industry: an ethos and practice of ‘remixed design’ that turns leftovers (trash) into contemporary collections (treasure).
These pieces are created by hand and made by local African refugees, in Melbourne.
The Social Studio is certified by Ethical Clothing Australia.

This East London institution was born in 1997 from the crafty hands of Annika Sanders and Kerry Seager.
After traveling the world in their early twenties and discovering the prevalence of recycling from San Francisco to Tokyo and the resourcefulness of people for Vietnam and Thailand, the two friends came back to London and began creating clothes for themselves from second hand finds.
From making experimental outfits for themselves to go clubbing, to dressing their friends and opening a stall in Kensington Market, the business grew and moved into its present hub in East London’t Brick Lane.
Although no two items can ever be the same, as they are all handcrafted from deconstructed pre-loved garments, you can usually expect to see endless stunning variations made from pinstriped suits and men’s shirts in a Junky Styling collection.
No transport necessary, the East-End design team just has to reach over and grab the discarded suits of the nearby city bankers to create a style that condenses all the codes of London fashion into something completely unique and always fun.
