1. RATE REORGANIZATION RESEARCH
In the current presentation of the rates in both the DMM and the ratefold, the rate
tables are organized by class. Given that the proposed information architecture for the
new DMM is shape based, the team was asked to explore the possible reorganization of
rates by shape. In the fall, this began with a high level visualization (in tree diagrams)
of the structure for all the rates (excluding periodicals) using Retail and Discount then
shape as the principle organizational categories. Second, prototypes of rate tables were
created incorporating icons and other visual elements.
2. Structure of “R” Sections in Current DMM
We began with an analysis of the presentation
of the rate tables in the current DMM. This
analysis included a comparison between the

and Fees. • First-Class Mail • Parcel Post - Intra-BMC/ASF • R000 Stamps and Stationery
• Express Mail • Parcel Post - Intra-BMC/ASF • R100 First-Class Mail
Our findings included: • Periodicals • Parcel Post - Parcel-Select • R200 Periodicals
The information in the Ratefold footnotes were Structure • Standard Mail • Media Mail • R500 Express Mail
displayed differently in the R section, some- • Fees • Library Mail • R600 Standard Mail
times as rule, sometimes as another table. • Priority Mail • Bound Printed Matter • R700 Package Services
• R900 Services
While the organization of rates supported com-
parisons within a class, comparing rates across
classes was not supported.
• Separate document from DMM • A section in DMM
Form • Compact tables with footnotes • Disaggregated tables with footnotes & rules
Finally, we determined that is was possible to

reflow this information into the new TOC. This
means that the rate tables and rules can be
disaggregated by method, shape as well as class.
As a result of this reorganization of the tables,
comparisons of rates across classes, within a By intermediate/expert mailers:

the rules and rate tables, the new TOC creates INTRODUCTION (Option 1) 100 RETAIL MAILING SERVICE 200-400 DISCOUNT MAILING SERVICE

8. “Class Pathway” sections in New DMM: Analysis of footnotes & rules — Examples
In order to integrate the rate tables in to the
new architecture, we analyzed the presentation
RATEFOLD RATES AND FEES
of this material in the R section of the DMM
and the ratefold. Based on this analysis we
concluded that the same content was not
treated consistently, i.e. a footnote in the
ratefold might be a rule in the R section.
Also, the tables and rules would have to be
reorganized to match the new TOC.
A color was applied to each footnote and rule
in the Ratefold and R section (Rates and Fees)
for all classes. Each color corresponds with a
category:
Information that should be a footnote because
it references an individual row, column or cell.
Rules that define the class or explain how the
rates are calculated.
Footnotes that should be used to modify or
create a new table.
Supplemental information that explains options
