2. BBC 1
• The Target Audience of BBC 1 is very varied, with BBC One being the prime
channel of the BBC. Therefore, their programme content and the style of
these shows is very varied. For example, at 7pm every night is EastEnders,
a British Soap Opera with a majorically female audience, with very
dramatic camera angles and a very dramatic and emotional script. Whereas
on a Saturday night, BBC One broadcasts Doctor Who, a sci-fi show with a
mostly young male target audience, and so it contains a more shallow script,
with less emotionally intelligent plotlines and more sweeping camera angles
to establish the extraordinary landscapes and stunning effects and
creatures.
• The style of BBC One’s programmes is also very adapting, changing their
content to accommodate what is popular with the prime time audience and
the seasons. For example, when The Great British Bake-Off was popular
and then sold to Channel 4, BBC One increased the amount of baking and
cooking shows in their output. Furthermore, the BBC is often considered the
No.1 channel for their Christmas and Easter seasonal output.
3. BBC 2
• The BBC 2 target audience is mostly an older and more intelligent audience
than the other BBC channels.
• This means that their content tends to appeal to an older and more
intelligent audience, with nature shows and difficult quiz-shows being the
main output on BBC2. This includes shows such as The Great British
Sewing Bee, Eggheads, University Challenge, Bargain Hunters, Antiques
Roadshow and various specials showing railways and the countryside in
Britain.
• BBC 2 Content rarely changes based on common trends, as their older
audience tends to be a stable niche to appeal to as their desires do not
change with popular culture, unlike the younger audience who’s desires
change based on what is popular in society and on social media.
4. BBC 3
• BBC 3 now appeals to a younger, tech-savvy audience as it has become a
fully digital, online channel. This means that it can only be viewed online
and as such only people with some technical awareness can access the
content of BBC 3.
• This means that their content generally appeals to a teenage/ young adult
audience. This is telling from their content such as their LGBTQ+ series
(highlighting issues in society amidst and about the LGBTQ community),
Don’t Tell the Bride, Family Guy, Educating Yorkshire and Sun, Sex and
Suspicious Parents. These all greatly appeal to the younger audience of
which BBC 3 appeals.
• BBC 3’s content changes based on what is popular on social media. With
youth becoming more liberal, BBC3 has become a more liberal channel,
airing more LGBT and youth-friendly content.
5. BBC 4
• BBC 4 has an older male audience, who are more interested in old-school
movies and TV Shows, action shows, police action-dramas and less popular
sports, including Darts and Motorbike Racing.
• This is shown by the content on BBC Four such as the Darts tournaments
throughout the year, their coverage of the Tour du France, their showings of
older James Bond movies and Ultimate Force. The style of content on BBC
Four is very “macho” with the fictional content containing very close-up and
intense camera angles to increase intensity, a very prevalent stereotype of
males’ interests in TV Shows.
• BBC 4 Content rarely changes based on common trends, as their older
audience tends to be a stable niche to appeal to as their desires do not
change with popular culture, unlike the younger audience who’s desires
change based on what is popular in society and on social media.
6. Cbeebies and CBBC
• Cbeebies and CBBC are both children’s channels. Cbeebies covers the ages of
around 1-6, while CBBC covers the ages from 7-14.
• This is shown in their content, which contains educational material and
children’s comedy, specifically Cbeebies, which contains programmes such as
Something Special (to teach deaf children sign language) and the
Numberjacks (to teach children numbers in an entertaining fashion). The
CBBC content then moves to dramas and comedies aimed at teaching social
lessons to the next generation, through shows such as Tracey Beaker and So
Awkward.
• The style of these shows change to encompass moving social issues and
values, moving into a more tolerant societal teaching and moving to show
content involving issues around technology and the problems of such.
