Whites feared revolts by the slaves…they slept with guns…they passed even stricter slave codes…it was illegal to teach slaves to read and write because they feared that ideas of revolt would spread if blacks had those skills
1790 – 750,00 slaves…1860 – 3.5 million slaves…one of every three southerners was a slave
After the Fugitive slave law, their goal was Canada…some actually went south to georgia and florida
