Under the rule of Mehmet II, the Ottomans conquered Constantinople in 1453, renaming the city Istanbul and establishing it as the permanent capital of the growing Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans developed one of the most advanced fighting forces in the world through the use of new weapons like small cannons and muskets as well as tactical maneuvers. They instituted a stable system of governing their large empire by limiting taxes on workers and appointing qualified officials regardless of background.
