Who We Are
Why This Talk
â˘âŻ Open Networking is the logical next step in the disruption of the IT vendor world
â˘âŻ Perfect Storm
â˘âŻ Too many people are asleep at the wheel
â˘âŻ Time to disrupt or be disrupted
6. CAMBODIA MAY 2016
OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ Inevitable - Itâs happened before - PCs, Optics, Servers, Elastic Fabrics (slow)
â˘âŻ White Label/OEM Revolution â Alibaba, Taiwan
â˘âŻ âHowâ people purchase is more important than âwhatâ
â˘âŻ Freemium apps, cloud PAYG, app store/itunes, OnDemand SVOD, etc
â˘âŻ Choice â The KILLER motivation
â˘âŻ Price â The KILLER reason
â˘âŻ Perfect Storm â Speed, Technology, Equipment Cycle, Opportunity, Motivation
â˘âŻ Being a practiced Futurist helped see what was coming
â˘âŻ October 2014 â Learn Linux by Dec 2015 or else
Why?
7. CAMBODIA MAY 2016
OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ Separation (disaggregation) of Operating System (NOS) from the Hardware
â˘âŻ Nothing to do with SDN
â˘âŻ Boot Loader on commodity hardware
â˘âŻ Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) donated by Cumulus Networks
â˘âŻ Most (all?) networking functions
â˘âŻ Big networking has always meant big dollars â barrier to compete
â˘âŻ Disruption has been a long time coming
What is Open Networking?

â˘âŻ Disaggregates Junos from the QFX5200 - 32C â AU$17K RRP
â˘âŻ OCX1100-48SX supports ONIE (same-ish hw as QFX5100)
â˘âŻ US$5K RRP (when ordering 1000 switches?) â US$31k otherwise
23. CAMBODIA MAY 2016
OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ Cisco
â˘âŻ Nexus 9K ONIE announcement/de-announcement
â˘âŻ Wind River Yocto Linux (NX-OS)
â˘âŻ Very uncomfortable. More pre-emptive moves? Wonât make a difference. Will they learn?
â˘âŻ Will try something by end of 2017 â might be too late
â˘âŻ Virtualise everything!
â˘âŻ HP/Dell
â˘âŻ All in
â˘âŻ Others
â˘âŻ Brocade â wrong focus â SDN is meh atm, Arista â great kit, but.. ?
â˘âŻ Mellanox joins ethernet â Immediately announces CL
â˘âŻ Prediction
â˘âŻ Cisco/Juniper will release a âliteâ version of their OS
â˘âŻ Brocade/Huawei/Arista will release ON in 2016
Incumbent Vendor Response
24. CAMBODIA MAY 2016
OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ Been watching Cumulus since mid-2013
â˘âŻ Considered Cumulus for AXONVX â limitations in VXLAN scaling and switching hardware options
â˘âŻ Watched them mature â the others just⌠sucked (Pica8 impossible to talk to)
â˘âŻ Needed to stay Linux... SDN still is not ready and skilling up is hard, minimal talent (still today)
â˘âŻ Watched who used them and who was partnering with them
â˘âŻ Evolution of the OS was in the right direction
â˘âŻ Local OfďŹce and Team established with good people (no one else has)
â˘âŻ Looked at HP ďŹrst (previous relationship) but they were confused (still are)
â˘âŻ Dell appeared with some nice switches and local support
â˘âŻ Dell has serious commitment to ON supporting multiple NOS
â˘âŻ Logistics wasnât easy at ďŹrst for something new
â˘âŻ Good Supply Chain and able to deliver; Tested the hardware, the people were good, very impressed
â˘âŻ Both met my âbillion dollar vendorâ philosophy
â˘âŻ Went all-in. Every network engineer MUST learn Linux, CL, 1 programming language, some orchestration
â˘âŻ No risk â Vendor or OS â change anytime if they donât perform â script it!
Why did EIN choose Cumulus Networks + Dell

OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ R.A.I.N - Redundant Array of Inexpensive Networking
â˘âŻ Cheap = spares = minimal support (SmartNet/JCare)
â˘âŻ New protocols â VXLAN
â˘âŻ New architectures â Spine and Leaf/Edge
â˘âŻ Extreme high speeds
â˘âŻ LAN vs WAN blur (in some places)
â˘âŻ Device evolution â more creative options. Only possible USP
â˘âŻ Device Smartness⌠more access than ever to the heart
Change your way of designing your networks

â˘âŻ âSon of Cisco blessed by Amazon, helped by China, feared by everyoneâ The Register 2013
â˘âŻ Itâs just Linux â it is just an evolutionary step
â˘âŻ VX is awesome - and free â and usable
â˘âŻ Revolution in Orchestration is coming
â˘âŻ People need time to catch-up
â˘âŻ Excellent pricing. Depending on speed
â˘âŻ (1/10/40/100 GE) â thatâs it

OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ Xenophobia
â˘âŻ Engineers with career investment are the biggest issue
â˘âŻ Change is hard for most
â˘âŻ âNobody ever got ďŹred for buying Ciscoâ â ummm? They willâŚ.
â˘âŻ Ignorance is not bliss
â˘âŻ Training is minimal
â˘âŻ No good certiďŹcation ecosystem
â˘âŻ Minimal job marketplace
â˘âŻ No âdummies guideâ
Some Problems with Open Networking
35. CAMBODIA MAY 2016
OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ Slingshot the small guy from 1GE to 40GE+
â˘âŻ Developing Countries have been held back
â˘âŻ Small guys now have access to kit which was previously too expensive to compete
at the same level (ON+EF=WIN!)
â˘âŻ Why potential?
â˘âŻ Revolutionary â hard for some. Many will not survive
â˘âŻ No choice though. Change or else
â˘âŻ Those who move ďŹrst will win â Jobs, Business, Customers, Experience, etc.
Potential Revolution
36. CAMBODIA MAY 2016
OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ Why Open Networking? The decision made itself
â˘âŻ In the middle of being sold â pricing was critical. Biggest bang for buck
â˘âŻ PoC was cheap. Could rapidly deploy many more PoPs for a lot less
â˘âŻ CL Supported new features already (VXLAN)
â˘âŻ Common OS (Linux) â not hard to cross-skill or buy into if needed
â˘âŻ ON hardware means you can always move to Junos/IOS later if it is an issue
â˘âŻ Pitched products by Cisco and Juniper were extremely expensive, not out yet, etc
Deployment - TransGrid

OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ Cisco pitched ASK901âs and NYR devices like NCS5501 â a year away
â˘âŻ ASR901 too slow not enough ports / NCS5501 will be â100k
â˘âŻ Juniper pitched MX104, ACX5K $46k base 10G RTU 48 ports $128k ++ â Umm?
â˘âŻ No VXLAN yet on ACX (only QFX5100 24Qâ55k)
â˘âŻ These are extremely amazing devices â but are just not worth the $$$
â˘âŻ Dell S4048-ON â under 10k (including CL) w/ 48*10G+6*40G = win!
â˘âŻ All Public RRP pricing
Vendor Comparison (Remote PoPs)
38. CAMBODIA MAY 2016
OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ Cisco, Juniper and others will be 80-90% software companies in a couple of years
â˘âŻ Deny it at your peril
â˘âŻ They will ďŹnd their ability value-add or USP minimised
â˘âŻ The bigger you are the slower you move and the less ďŹexibility you have
â˘âŻ Their shareholders are addicted to returns
â˘âŻ One of the top 5 will probably not survive the next 2-3 years
â˘âŻ The disrupters will be disrupted. SW world makes this easier for the small guy to
innovate without restriction
Reality
39. CAMBODIA MAY 2016
OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ Orchestration Revolution (Starting now⌠will take time, coding is hard
â new blood)
â˘âŻ Cisco/Juniper Lite/Cheap OS?
â˘âŻ Extremely interesting hardware options
â˘âŻ Imagine a switchâŚ..
â˘âŻ FrankenNetworking
â˘âŻ Whitebox Routing
â˘âŻ Just extra hardware â NPU, TCAM, etc.
â˘âŻ Another battlefront for Cisco/Juniper to ďŹght
â˘âŻ Whitebox Wireless/Security/IoT (already here)?

OPEN NETWORKING REVOLUTION
â˘âŻ Speed race
â˘âŻ The network(s) is about to get VERY fast
â˘âŻ NetďŹix 4k (and more SVOD), Virtual/Augmented Reality, etc
â˘âŻ NBN Gig speeds, more technologies. NBN CVC
â˘âŻ Faster WiFi, 25/50G Eth ports
â˘âŻ Skill ramp-up time (no people to hire! ⌠yet)
â˘âŻ Attitude change of staff â slow and painful. Seeing it everywhere
â˘âŻ Elastic Fabric Speeds â Not going to slow down
â˘âŻ Wholesale handoffs (UE 1G?)
â˘âŻ Costs â basic features need not cost 10-20 times
â˘âŻ No reason to pay more when you donât need to
Why you should care
