Prevention of Obesity
   among Children
Brief Patient/Learner
            Summary
The patient is 10 years old, a grade 4
 student, with a diagnosis of overweight.
 His height is 4’9 and with a weight of
 53kgs. He is not active in physical
 activities. Slow in movements. His parents
 tolerate him to have a bad eating habits
especially eating not nutritious food (e.g.
chips and soft drinks) on his snacks. Initial
interview suggests preference for learning
through visual means.
Introduction of Topic
Childhood obesity is a condition where
 excess body fat negatively affects a
 child’s health or wellbeing. As methods to
 determine body fat directly are difficult, the
 diagnosis of obesity is often based on
 BMI.
Due to the rising prevalence of obesity in
 children and its many adverse health
 effects it is being recognized as a serious
 public health concern. It is important to
 recognize that obesity in many cases can
 be a preventable health condition.
While many factors including genetic
 predisposition          contribute        to
 obesity, dietary behaviors and rates of
 physical activity are two major factors that
 can be modified.
Teaching about healthy diet and the
importance of maintaining a health activity
 level to young children is important as
 obesity is more easily prevented than
 treated.
It is important to begin prevention
 efforts early in childhood because obesity
 in    adolescence      is   the    strongest
 predictor of obesity in adulthood.
