The Career of a mathematics
          teacher
What Does a Teacher Do?

• Definition: A person who provides
  education to others
• Quote: “Teachers play an important role in
fostering the intellectual and social development
  of children.” - OOH
• Statistic: The projected employment
in 2018, according to OOH, is
  approximately 3,944,900.
What Is The NCLB Act
• The No Child Left Behind or NCLB Act is an act
passed by President George W. Bush to raise
the number of students graduating college
  and high school.

George W. Bush started NCLB, but President
Obama has started his own campaign to
increase literacy rates in the U.S.A called Race
    to The Top.
What are the affects of NCLB?
• Literacy rates have increased, but teachers are
in tight state because if the given percentage
of students do not graduate, the teacher
  looses his or her job.
• According to a article by Jack Hennings and
Diane Stark, state and county officials say that
children’s score are increasing, but they aren’t
sure if the kids are truly learning anything.
What are some opinions of NCLB?
• An article stated that teachers who have watched
the school say that NCLB has ruined the school,
putting the teachers and schools in a struggle. The
act has also caused many teachers to cheat because
of the risk they’re taking and loose their jobs. They
also feel betrayed by President Obama and are
frightened by the future of schools.
Why was the NCLB act passed
• To improve education in public schools and
  increase employment in the U.S.
What are the Disadvantages of NCLB?

• Students don’t get as much time in other
subjects such as social studies or English,
because NCLB forces schools to concentrate
  only on math and reading.
Math Teacher
• My “topic” was NCLB. I tied this career with a teacher
because the Act, passed originally by President George
  W. Busch, then continued by President Barack Obama,
  mainly affected educators and teachers.
   – -Median Annual wages range from $47, 100 ~ $51, 180
   – The employment of teachers increase as the population of
     schools increase
   – Job opportunities for teachers vary
   – Related careers include
   – Preschool directors
   – Vocational teachers
   – Special education teachers
High School Career academies
• I went to River Hill High School
• I researched the Teacher Academy
• I picked this career academy because the
academy had an interesting program for the
    future teachers of America.
University of Maryland

• College Park, Maryland
• Tuition: $22,050
• You need to have a bachelors degree with a
3.0 GPA, have taken Praxis I and II, have to
have had experience with young children, and
a strong background in certification area
  content.
• School mascot is a turtle and is called the
  Terrapins.
Community Service
• Fundraiser for a child in India
• I did this because the child had four arms and
four legs, and needed a surgery, but her
  parents couldn’t afford a surgery.
Prior Job Experience

• Fashion designer assistant
• Made sandwiches at subway
• Worked as a waitress at Olive Garden
• Packed bags at BJ’s
• Graduated KUMON
• Earned first place in Martin Luther King writing
  contest
• Was on the Honor Roll in high school
• Participated in Chorus
• Created the Memory book in high school
