 Nuclear Fission is the process of splitting a
atom’s nucleus by bombarding it with
neutrons.
 This creates large
quantities of energy
which is carried by
water to run turbine
(similar to wind turbine)
which turn produced
electricity and
connected to the grid.
The notorious Uranium-235
needed for fusion. Every
fission can produce 200
times more energy than the
same amount of TNT.
 Carbon-free. So better than fossil fuels.
 Cheap source of electricity
 Most powerful energy source
 Much more efficient than wind power.
 New fusion will produce no waste at all.
 Radioactive waste can last for ages
(thousands of years). These are
mutagens meaning they can alter the
DNA killing cells or giving cancer.
 High security risk. Can be under terrorist
threats.
 Non-Renewable. Once used…that’s it.
 System will fail if not looked after.
 We are growing up in an age where the
word ‘nuclear’ or ‘Uranium’ makes an
image of a giant explosion and green
toxic waste, that is not it. It could be a
way to reduce Global Warming.
 After being removed from the reactor,
the waste is put into steel cylinder.
 These are so strong they can withstand
50 mph crashes.
 Then they are emptied into landfill.
America sends their waste into a tunnel
on a side of a mountain. They are able
to store more.
 In 26th April 1986, a event in
Ukraine left the world stunted. It
was the largest nuclear
catastrophe the world had ever
seen. On the site, 2 workers were
killed and many more firemen
trying to fight the blaze. The
government death toll was
around 200 but many say it was
much more. So what went
wrong?
Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster
On that day, tests were being
carried out on the reactor and
the amount of pressure it could handle. However, it
was a soviet reactor and many assessments were
different to the American ones. The bad care
meant a graphite top which was not strong even
broke open shooting the radioactive waste into
the open air.
Some were carried over by the wind to Russia and
Europe.
This diagram shows the movement of the radioactive material. This
was caesium-137 with iodine and barium. They are toxic as well and kill
plants and just by inhaling it.The material half-live is 30 years which
means they can last for 60 years which is a massive threat.
 This picture shows a
deformed child when
the mother was
pregnant. They were not
alone many lost their
arm, legs and
dysfunctional organs. It
is predicted to take
decade for the
generation to recover.
 People thought nuclear power was at a end but
new regulations mean chances of such
devastations are at a minimum.
 But it should be a lesson of what a beast nuclear
energy can be if not treated well.
 I am for nuclear power, because it is cleaner than
fossil fuel and more efficient than wind and solar.
 And yes it caused havoc in 1986, but we had
problems from oil and gas as well such as the BP oil
spill.
 Accidents will happen. All we can do is reduce the
chances of it.
