Language Development in Children By Keshia Barker
Language Development Checklist The following slides contain a checklist from birth till 4 years old of things typically developed children are able to do with their language. Birth to 5 months Turns Head toward sound sources Watches your face when you speak Vocalizes pleasure and displeasure sounds (laughs, giggles, cries, or fusses). Makes noises when talked to
6-11 months Understand “no-no” Begins to Babble Tries to communicate through actions or gestures Tries to repeat your sounds
12-17 months Answers simple questions non-verbally Says two or three words to label and object Tries to imitate simple words
18-23 Months Understands Simple verbs Correctly pronounces most vowels and n, m, p, h. Says 8-10 words Starts combining words
2-3 years Knows about 50 words Speech is becoming more accurate Answers simple questions Speaks in 2-3 word phrases Knows more pronouns (I, me, you, her, etc.)
3-4 years Uses consonants at the beginning, middle, and end of words Has fun with language Expresses Ideas and feeling Repeats Sentences
Repeating When a child reaches the ages of 3 or 4 they start to repeat sentences. This is when parents should be extra extra aware of what they are saying because this is when Kids start to Say the Darnest things. We think it is hilarious but most of the time they are just repeating what they have heard before.
