Everything
that you need
and want to
know.
BiggRooK a.k.a. KingSoLoMon is an artist originally hailing from the Southside of
St. Louis, MO. He grew up loving music and some on his early music influences
were 2-Pac,The Notorious BIG, Outkast, UGK, E-40, NWA, 2-Short, and Mac Dre.
His sound could best be described as having a Midwestern flow with Bay influences.
Bigg RooK is no stranger to hard work. As a former well known Bodyguard from St. Louis he has
4
worked for countless celebrities. On Easter Morning April 3rd of 2011 an incident occurred while he was
working at a Lil Webbie concert at Blackmons Plaza in East St. Louis. Bigg RooK and a couple of other
security guards ended up fighting off a crowd of about 20 to 30 who Stared Club Brawl with him and the
rest of the club security. Despite no police assistance, he and a couple others that were working with him
eventually restored order. Unfortunately, He was shot in the process. You can check the footage out on
youtube by searching “BlackMons Plaza Fight”.
Bigg RooK is also no stranger to the big screen. He has appeared in underground movies such as the

“YadaMovie” “Trap In The Hood” and was also recently cast in the
new Hollywood movie “#HauntedTheMovie” starring Tobin Bell
from the Hollywood Blockbuster movie series “Saw”.
BiggRooK Rx is a God fearing man Meaning HE IS A BELIEVER
IN THE #MostHigh #Yah and is constantly working to improve
himself and his music. And with the Lord as his Shepard there are
no limits. BIGG things are on the way.
T2LE: How long have you been rapping?
KS: I have been seriously rapping for about 3 yrs. now but I’ve been involved with
music all my life I played violin for a couple years in the orchestra that was my
mom’s idea I was not too happy at first but I learned to like it a lot it trained my ear
for all kinds of sounds.
T2LE: I understand you were also a bodyguard, are you still in that profession?
KS: Yes I used to be a body guard and no I’m not still invoked in body guard work
after my incident at Blackmon’s plaza and the also being left hanging on lawyer’s
fees with another known rapper in today’s hip hop I’ll leave his name out because
I’m passed that now, even though at the time I was a very angry individual whenever
I would think about it because it could have
caused me to lose a lot of time...But God is
good and here I am.
T2LE: What is the hardest part about being a
bodyguard?
KS: The hardest part about being a body
guard is trust the individual you’re protecting
because like I said a lot individuals are not men of their word so therefore in return
you have to choose wisely who u say you gone protect cuz u never know what type
of person they are and if you guys get into an altercation and you end up having to
take a charge for them are u hurt someone you could possibly get left hanging out
to dry ...so I would I have to say JUDGEMENT... WHEN TO TRUST, WHO TO
TRUST, HOW MUCH, AND WHEN NOT TO APPLY
PRESSURE.
T2LE: Who are your musical influences?
KS: Musical Influences --- 8Ball & MJG, Pimp C,
Bun B, N.W.A, Master P, JadaKiss, Nas, 2Pac, Biggie,
OutKast, Digital Underground, Mac Dre, E-40, Keak
Da Sneak, Eminem, 50 Cent, and the list goes on, I
like artist who have a story to tell with a meaning.
T2LE: What is the music scene like in St Louis?
KS: The music scene in St Louis is pretty much
biased and I say that because there is a lot of local
talent, and we are good in our own way, and I think
we all agree that there is a lot of haters in St Louis.
But that number is almost equal to the individuals that
understand there is a lot of haters, so half the city like
to hate and half the city recognize the haters. So if the
half that recognize the haters link together to form a
family, we would very rapidly put the haters to shame,
because even though haters love to hate they are alone
because they are haters and no one wants to be around
them, so naturally, they would change because their
surroundings would change, but that’s easier said than
done, or is it? I challenge people all the time to be
what they say they are, and be real and real is doing
what you say and saying what you mean. Therefore
I think that the St Louis Music scene will get better
once we as artists start to truly be who we say we are,
and not what the industry wants us to be which is in
competition, and divided.
T2LE: I know that you are a very positive person, how
does that influence your music?
KS: It actually fuels it because I am the type of person that
wants to see everyone happy and well doing, but it also
makes me angry because I also realize that is not possible
because everyone does not have the same heart, so my
music reflects the positivity that I would like to see, but
my music also express’s my frustration with the stupidity
that some artists reflect to upcoming youth. I believe that
rap music actually helps young kids that grow up hard
because some of the artist have had hard lives and when
an artist really puts his all into a rap song telling history
on how he went through and came out shining and admits
to wrongs and faults in his records, that shows kids how to
rectify themselves. Some lessons are hard but better hard
knocks than ignorance… and some skids only understand
certain styles of conversation from certain individuals…
That’s just a fact.
T2LE: What are your thoughts on the state of music
today?
KS: My thoughts on the music today is that it is not what
it used to be by far, I believe that some artists are doing
it more for the fame and money and not for the love of
the God-given gift they have been blessed with the reason
why because the music ant talking bout shyt,,sorry for my
language but I don’t sugar coat at all and that’s how I fill
about some of these main stream artist just doing weird
stuff and dressing weird trying to see how many people
they can get to do the same silly stuff....it’s a monkey see
monkey do experiment LMAO...
7
T2LE: What do you hope to accomplish through
your music?
KS: I would like to see more positive things
for my city. Especially our inner city schools
I’m using my music to tell my stories and life,
and how I dealt with certain issues. I try to
implement old school rules and regulations on
how to carry yourself in real life situations, but
only on things that I can relate to that I have
experienced in my life...I’m in this so that me
and my staff and artists can make a ton of money
and do something about the tension in our city,
give learning experiences to kids who wouldn’t
normally get to do certain things, build new up to
date state of the art recreation centers, develop
a free arts and crafts programs for all… I believe
in a community where all get to enjoy happiness
and activities at little to no cost, would relieve
a lot of stress, open some business’s, and create
jobs with my record label that I’m building.

The definition of staying on your grind and
staying humble is my mentor Rob Schwartz.
Always a few steps ahead, but always
available when needed. I remember the first
time I sat to talk with him; I was amazed with
his attitude towards work, and maintaining a
level of humility. Make no mistake; he is about
his business, but in a way that doesn’t come
off arrogant, or egotistical. Rob is a down to
earth, honest, and hardworking businessman.
Rob Schwartz is owner of WHO?MAG
Multimedia, LLC. WHO?MAG is a company
dedicated to providing High Quality services
to the Urban Entertainment Industry. Rob
first began his journey with WHO?MAG
DVD, which was a digital video interview
series with some of the hottest Independent
and mainstream artists. Rob has created an
avenue for not only music artists, but also
Actors/Actresses, and professional athletes to
connect with their fans. Rob caters to a wide
audience, and is successful at keeping their
attention with his ever growing multimedia
company.
I recently had the pleasure of meeting up
with Rob again to discuss his success thus far,
after our mini mentoring session (basically
me picking his brain about anything and
everything regarding his first initial start
in the music industry), I asked Rob a few
questions about his journey, about his first
9
interview, and where he is right now in his business
growth. He gave me some real truth, and some real
advice. The one thing that sticks out in my mind
is when I asked him how he dealt with the fear of
rejection when first starting out. His answer “For
every no, there will be 5 Yes’s!” I love it!!
Rob’s passion for music and specifically hip-hop has
transcended into a successful business that reaches
audiences nationally, as well as internationally. A
man with such a great vision, and such great suc-cess,
is still courteous, modest, and respectful to his
fans. Rob currently hosts a very successful Artist
Showcase which features WHO?MAG distribution
clients.

Cue (thehiphop) or BRI △N
Is an upcoming hiphop artist. Born in Washington DC
raised in Illinois and Maryland respectively, Cue gained
an interest in hiphop at the age of 10. He didn’t begin
to write and record music until the age of 14. Cue is
currently serving as an active duty soldier in the US
ARMY. He uses down time pursuing a career in music.
His music stands apart as is not so much about bling
and flash as it is about real life and deeper thought
processes. At 24yrs old Cue has performed in numerous
cities across four different countries and plans to take
his music even further in the years to come. Cue is part
of a Hiphop based collective called “Senior Project”
located in the DMV area of the United States. He
currently lives in Venice Italy.
T2LE: Where are you originally from?
C: My parents were separated so I moved around a lot.
I spent most of my younger years in Frederick Maryland
so I claim that as my hometown; however I spent a lot
of time in Chicago and Richton Park Illinois as a kid.
T2LE: What made you choose music?
C: Music is the only thing that always makes sense to
me. It invokes creation in itself and inspires people to
move forward with whatever tasks they pursuit. To me
music is life.
12
13
T2LE: Where do you get your video ideas from?
C: My videos are usually a mix of fragmented thoughts
and images. This is because that’s how my songs are.
In my mind at least. Very rarely do I make song that
is about one idea or telling one story. It’s a structured
mess. Chaotic.
T2LE: What are your musical influences?
C: Well I grew up listening to a lot of oldies and
alternative rock. I didn’t really “get into” hip-hop until I
was in middle school. I draw influence and inspiration
from all types of music Jazz, classical, rock, house.
T2LE: Give us a little background on your new album?
What was the inspiration?
C: My new Album is called SINS. It’s an acronym for
“Shit I Never Said”. Throughout the tape I’m telling my
listeners things about myself and my life that I have
never reveled before. A couple things that I’ve never
told anyone. So this CD is a lot like a confessional. It’s
straight rapping for me on here. I didn’t do any singing
and kept it 100. The album is set up in two parts. If you
listen to it track for track in order, the album will take on
a new meaning for you.

All Is What I’m about. Hi I’m Kev Ruger,
I’ve been rapping since I was 14 years
old. Born & raised on the streets of North
Philly I found music to be my outlet. In-fluenced
by the likes of Nas, Tupac &
Biggie I begin to write little verses here &
there. But it wasn’t until I took my talent
to the streets where I was cosigned, that
I knew I had something. Ever since then,
I never stopped. With five solo mixtapes
out & a new one on the way in July, &
three others with three different groups I
was in over the years. I think it’s very fair
to say I got work.

Tyler Perry
is also
a huge
inspiration
Naomi
Rose
T2LE: Where do you get your musical inspiration?
NR: My musical inspiration comes from singing in church and always
having a passion for the arts. I was active in ballet, plays, and singing
in the choir from age 5 to present.
T2LE: Who are your all time favorite artists?
NR: I love old school artists because I feel like natural talent had to
standout back before technology took over studios. My favorites are
Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Phyllis Hyman, Gladys
Knight, & Otis Redding.
T2LE: How do you feel about the state of Music today, especially how
women are portrayed?
NR: Honestly, I’m often disappointed by today’s music. I feel like
23 “ lyrics don’t hold any meaning, it’s all about material possessions, & violence. Women
are portrayed as nothing less than objects who have to look a certain way & there is little
to no respect for them lyric wise. It’s disheartening to me that it’s become so acceptable.
T2LE: What inspired you to move to Atlanta?
NR: Having gone to college here, I always liked the atmosphere
I’m often
of Atlanta. Tyler Perry is also a huge inspiration to me & I
hope to one day work with him. I just felt like the circuit &
disappointed
opportunities are broader here so that’s why I made the move.
by today’s
T2LE: How do you like modeling vs singing?
music.”
NR: I love singing more than anything, but modeling still puts
me in the spotlight to gain exposure. I modeled & directed shows during my college
career so it’s still a comfortable space for me. I must say though that I love the flash of
the cameras on the runway.
T2LE: How old were you when you first started singing, and when did you notice that
you were as great as you are?
NR: According to my parents, I
started singing at age two before I
really even started talking. I realized
I could sing at age five when I started
in the children’s choir at church. I
vividly remember imitating Patti
LaBelle in the mirror so I guess when
I realized I could powerhouse sing
like her is when I started to think,
“hey kid, you’ve got something
special here”.
Time 2

the time is

23
24
T2LE: I noticed that you don’t sing any
negative, or demeaning music, what inspired
you to go this route?
NR: I would definitely say my upbringing. I
was raised not to compromise myself, respect
others, & be proud of doing the right thing so
I want my music to inspire & enrich lives. I
pride myself on not being the norm so I stick
to my guns as an artist.
T2LE: What is a normal day like for Naomi
Rose?
NR: A normal day can consist of staying in &
just writing new material or attending casting calls for modeling/acting
opportunities, recording in the studio, & searching for opportunities for
performances at various venues in Atlanta.
T2LE: What other projects can we catch you in?
NR: I’ve actually been really busy with modeling lately but I’m hoping
to get into some stage play roles within the next few months so I will
definitely keep T2L posted on upcoming projects.
T2LE: Who is your support system, and just how necessary is it to have
a strong one?
NR: My mom is my ROCK! She’s been my biggest fan since I used to
move around in her belly to Michael Jackson. All of my family & friends
in Baltimore, Philly, & New Jersey are very supportive as well. I must
also mention my friends Maya & Sylvie in Atlanta who have been ex-tremely
supportive with helping me relocate here. It is very necessary to
have people like this when you are going after your dream. It’s not easy
& some days you want to quit but a strong support system will keep you
moving forward.

Meena is an italian-born artist. She’s currently
studying fashion design in Venice and she
just spent 6 months in London interning for
the very iconic Vivienne Westwood. Since
childhood Meena has always had a passion
for design and a deep interest of styles and
arts from various cultures of the world, thus
allowing her to fuse many different looks
from the globe in to one unique style and also
permitted her to develop a strong personality
despite she grew up in a small proviciale town
of closed-minded. At aged 16 she discovered
photography was another way of artistic
expression and thanks to this new passion,
she honed her taste and skills by first using
herself as a model and then friends. Years later
Meena works primarily as a photographer
at concerts and clubs but at the same time
continuing to cultivate her love for the artistic

Nation Zamar…
29 T2LE: Can you give us a little bit of history
behind your musical background?
NZ: According to my mother, I was singing and
“humming” before I could crawl, walk or talk. I
have a musical family so I was surrounded by
music all of the time. Also, both my grandmother
and mother are/were singer-songwriters,
musicians and musical/choir directors and
since I was always with my mother, she was the
epitome of “how it’s done!”. Music was all I knew.
Around the age of 3, I remember singing in front
of large crowds at church programs, concerts/
musicals, etc. If I didn’t have a crowd I would,
either, get peoples attention and have them
listen to me sing or pretend that I had a crowd of
people watching me. I, also, remember traveling
and singing at various venues around the U.S.
(ie. prisons, national conventions/conferences,
concerts, celebrations, etc.) and, like they say,
the rest is history.
T2LE: Which do you love more, Singing, or
music production?
NZ: That is a hard one because both singing
and musical production are very fulfilling, but in
different ways. Singing is, in many cases, very
personal, whereas musical production is not
as personal. Although people can use both to
express/communicate what they desire, singing
would be my choice of expression. Being a
singer is like you having your own custom-made
instrument, that you’ve taken time to
29
mold/design, and being able to play it any and
everywhere, at any given time.
T2LE: When did you get your first start musically?
NZ: Around the age of 3. I remember always
volunteering (or being randomly selected) to sing
a solo in every choir I was in, whether it was a
community choir or a church choir. At times, because
I was so small, they would put me on a box so that
I could be seen by the audience. I, also, remember
traveling and singing with my mom and various
choirs she would direct/lead. I was with her 24/7.
T2LE: Who are your favorite artists?
NZ: I enjoy and respect a wide variety of artists.
My all-time favorite is Ms. Lauryn Hill and she has
been ever since I was 5yrs old. I was finally able
to meet and speak with her, at her Valentine-Day
concert at the Hollywood Palladium, 2 years ago
and at that moment, I realized why she was my
favorite artist of all time.
T2LE: What is your favorite thing to do musically?
NZ: That is, also, a difficult question. It is difficult
considering all I do concerning music (ie. sing/
rap, write, producer/arrange/compose, multi-instrumentalist,
vocal coach & teacher, etc.).
If I had to pick one thing, it would be singing
background for other great artists. That is my
favorite thing to do, musically. It feels great being
on one accord, with other vocalists, supporting
another artist.
T2LE: What is your first song you ever sang in
front of a live crowd, and how did it feel?
NZ: If my memory serves me correctly, it was,
“Silver & Gold” by: Kirk Franklin. It was a duet
with my aunt, Pollie Latimer, and we would sing
at various venues/churches, near and far. I recall
singing that particular song, often, at my home
church (at the time), “St. Paul Baptist Church” in
Oxnard, CA. I was, often, very nervous/shy and
still am to this very day, lol.
T2LE: When did you know that you had a musical
gift?
NZ: When I was much younger, I actually
thought everyone had a musical gift. Maybe
that was because I was surrounded by music
at home, church, school, friends & family, family
gatherings, etc. Music was all I knew and since
I have a musical family, we still, to this day, tend
to burst into song at the most random times.
T2LE: Where are you currently located, and are
you looking to travel?
NZ: I am located in Los Angeles, CA. Yes! I would
absolutely love to travel more than I already
have. For some time now, Dubai has been a
place I’ve wanted to go, for business and music.
Such an innovative place, from what I hear, and
I love the scenery, from what I see in pictures/
videos.

Mainstream Artists VS
Independent Artists
When you start out as an independent
artist, the freedom that comes with it is
often difficult to trade in even when the
opportunity presents itself to switch over to
mainstream music. It’s certainly difficult to
say no to mainstream music and the perks
that come with it: recognition, record sales
and wide spread marketing and distribution.
But it does come at the expense of the artists’
creative freedom in many cases.
The diversity that indie music showcases
goes beyond the terrain that mainstream
music explores. Indie rock artists do rely
on mainstream labels from time to time to
distribute their albums while retaining their
autonomy. This works well for both sides as
indie artists can continue to explore fresh
sounds and subjects, while mainstream
labels establish the niche for them. It also
lays the foundation for mainstream artists
working with them to diversify and evolve.
The internet and growth of digital technology
has presented quite a few challenges to
the music industry. But of the two, indie
artists remain the least influenced by these
challenges. Digital platforms are in a way a
better platform for indie artists to reach out
and gain recognition. While it means poor
record sales for mainstream artists, it means
better marketing for indie artists allowing
them to take their music directly to their
target audience.
Revolutionized in the UK and the US, indie
pop and indie rock have proven their
strength for decades now. The entry of
alternative rock in the 80s’ into mainstream
music has since blurred the lines between
grunge, alternative rock and indie rock. Their
philosophies synchronized into one effort:
to remain true to the music, continuously
proving their authenticity over the years.
Whether it’s the Arctic Monkeys or Demi
Lovato, artists themselves try to bring you
some of their best efforts. The classifications
fall entirely on their ability to land labels or in
37

The
Importance
of Marketing
as an Indie
Artist
To gain an audience an Indie artist needs to
learn about marketing. On the bright side,
you don’t need to wait to be discovered.
You don’t need a major label to take you
on. You can make it happen for yourself. In
order to this, you need to put yourself out
there. It’s worth it. Without marketing, you
will remain an unknown. Here are a few
ideas to market Indie music.
* Build a website - This is a must. It should
include biography, samples of your music,
and upcoming tours and activities for the
indie music scene.
* Social media – Be interactive with your
soon-to-be fans on social media. The most
popular platform for underground artists
is YouTube. Don’t limit yourself. Facebook
gets a lot of traffic. Engage your visitors by
posting samples of your music, upcoming
events, and hold contests and giveaways.
their strength to explore their options individually.
Where indie music stays constant and true to its
soul, never marred by the stick-with-the-tried-and-tested
ideology, mainstream artists are sometimes
herded with their music to ensure success.
What started out as underground music has now
takers in every city and country across the world.
Record labels and producers look for indie groups
to partner with mainstream artists on tour to boost
ticket sales. At the end of the day, it’s the local
support that makes indie artists what they are –
musicians closer to home and closer to the social
elements wonderfully brought out in their music.
Name the file with a popular group in your genre
or style, and add a question mark after it. For
example, “Unreleased Eminem?” Include the
real band name and the URL to your website in
the file. Illegal downloaders will distribute your
song everywhere, and you will be discovered
by a new audience.
* Reviews - Many Indie music sites would be
interested in reviewing your music. A few
examples would be IndieMusicReviewer.com,
IndieMusicDigest.com, TheEqualGround.com,
Pitchfork.com, and MusicEmissions.com
* Align yourself with a nonprofit – Help a
charitable organization while gaining publicity.
You can offer to give a portion of your proceeds
to a worthy cause.
* Network with other Indie Artists - Sell your
music directly to the public and interact in
the Indie music scene with Reverbnation.com,
OurStage.com, OurWave.com, and Artists.MTV
What are you waiting for? Get out there and
market. Create the kind of music that you find
inspiring and let everyone know about it.
If you think you can get your message out in
140 characters or less, Twitter is a good site to
add to your arsenal.
* Press release – You can send out a press
release online. This should cover your
biography, contact information, music demo,
and interviews.
* Distribute your music worldwide - There are
several ways in which you can go about this.
Two websites that will accomplish this for you
are Tunecore and CDbaby. With both you can
have your music distributed to major players
like iTunes. They have up to 95+ distribution
partners. As the name indicates, CDbaby will
also help you to distribute CDs of your music.
It’s a great way to quickly get your music all
over the world.
* Radio Stations - Promote your Indie music
to radio stations. Radiodirectx.com offers to
promote your music to 5000+ radio and media
members.
* Sneaky trick – “Leak” one of your singles.

  • 4. 4 King solomon Everything that you need and want to know. BiggRooK a.k.a. KingSoLoMon is an artist originally hailing from the Southside of St. Louis, MO. He grew up loving music and some on his early music influences were 2-Pac,The Notorious BIG, Outkast, UGK, E-40, NWA, 2-Short, and Mac Dre. His sound could best be described as having a Midwestern flow with Bay influences. Bigg RooK is no stranger to hard work. As a former well known Bodyguard from St. Louis he has 4 worked for countless celebrities. On Easter Morning April 3rd of 2011 an incident occurred while he was working at a Lil Webbie concert at Blackmons Plaza in East St. Louis. Bigg RooK and a couple of other security guards ended up fighting off a crowd of about 20 to 30 who Stared Club Brawl with him and the rest of the club security. Despite no police assistance, he and a couple others that were working with him eventually restored order. Unfortunately, He was shot in the process. You can check the footage out on youtube by searching “BlackMons Plaza Fight”. Bigg RooK is also no stranger to the big screen. He has appeared in underground movies such as the

Check out more informations on website! 5 “YadaMovie” “Trap In The Hood” and was also recently cast in the new Hollywood movie “#HauntedTheMovie” starring Tobin Bell from the Hollywood Blockbuster movie series “Saw”. BiggRooK Rx is a God fearing man Meaning HE IS A BELIEVER IN THE #MostHigh #Yah and is constantly working to improve himself and his music. And with the Lord as his Shepard there are no limits. BIGG things are on the way. T2LE: How long have you been rapping? KS: I have been seriously rapping for about 3 yrs. now but I’ve been involved with music all my life I played violin for a couple years in the orchestra that was my mom’s idea I was not too happy at first but I learned to like it a lot it trained my ear for all kinds of sounds. T2LE: I understand you were also a bodyguard, are you still in that profession? KS: Yes I used to be a body guard and no I’m not still invoked in body guard work after my incident at Blackmon’s plaza and the also being left hanging on lawyer’s fees with another known rapper in today’s hip hop I’ll leave his name out because I’m passed that now, even though at the time I was a very angry individual whenever I would think about it because it could have caused me to lose a lot of time...But God is good and here I am. T2LE: What is the hardest part about being a bodyguard? KS: The hardest part about being a body guard is trust the individual you’re protecting because like I said a lot individuals are not men of their word so therefore in return you have to choose wisely who u say you gone protect cuz u never know what type of person they are and if you guys get into an altercation and you end up having to take a charge for them are u hurt someone you could possibly get left hanging out to dry ...so I would I have to say JUDGEMENT... • 6. TRUST, HOW MUCH, AND WHEN NOT TO APPLY PRESSURE. T2LE: Who are your musical influences? KS: Musical Influences --- 8Ball & MJG, Pimp C, Bun B, N.W.A, Master P, JadaKiss, Nas, 2Pac, Biggie, OutKast, Digital Underground, Mac Dre, E-40, Keak Da Sneak, Eminem, 50 Cent, and the list goes on, I like artist who have a story to tell with a meaning. T2LE: What is the music scene like in St Louis? KS: The music scene in St Louis is pretty much biased and I say that because there is a lot of local talent, and we are good in our own way, and I think we all agree that there is a lot of haters in St Louis. But that number is almost equal to the individuals that understand there is a lot of haters, so half the city like to hate and half the city recognize the haters. So if the half that recognize the haters link together to form a family, we would very rapidly put the haters to shame, because even though haters love to hate they are alone because they are haters and no one wants to be around them, so naturally, they would change because their surroundings would change, but that’s easier said than done, or is it? I challenge people all the time to be what they say they are, and be real and real is doing what you say and saying what you mean. Therefore I think that the St Louis Music scene will get better once we as artists start to truly be who we say we are, and not what the industry wants us to be which is in competition, and divided. T2LE: I know that you are a very positive person, how does that influence your music? KS: It actually fuels it because I am the type of person that wants to see everyone happy and well doing, but it also makes me angry because I also realize that is not possible because everyone does not have the same heart, so my music reflects the positivity that I would like to see, but my music also express’s my frustration with the stupidity that some artists reflect to upcoming youth. I believe that rap music actually helps young kids that grow up hard because some of the artist have had hard lives and when an artist really puts his all into a rap song telling history on how he went through and came out shining and admits to wrongs and faults in his records, that shows kids how to rectify themselves. Some lessons are hard but better hard knocks than ignorance… and some skids only understand certain styles of conversation from certain individuals… That’s just a fact. T2LE: What are your thoughts on the state of music today? KS: My thoughts on the music today is that it is not what it used to be by far, I believe that some artists are doing it more for the fame and money and not for the love of the God-given gift they have been blessed with the reason why because the music ant talking bout shyt,,sorry for my language but I don’t sugar coat at all and that’s how I fill about some of these main stream artist just doing weird stuff and dressing weird trying to see how many people they can get to do the same silly stuff....it’s a monkey see monkey do experiment LMAO...
  • 7. 7 T2LE: What do you hope to accomplish through your music? KS: I would like to see more positive things for my city. Especially our inner city schools I’m using my music to tell my stories and life, and how I dealt with certain issues. I try to implement old school rules and regulations on how to carry yourself in real life situations, but only on things that I can relate to that I have experienced in my life...I’m in this so that me and my staff and artists can make a ton of money and do something about the tension in our city, give learning experiences to kids who wouldn’t normally get to do certain things, build new up to date state of the art recreation centers, develop a free arts and crafts programs for all… I believe in a community where all get to enjoy happiness and activities at little to no cost, would relieve a lot of stress, open some business’s, and create jobs with my record label that I’m building. I remember the first time I sat to talk with him; I was amazed with his attitude towards work, and maintaining a level of humility. Make no mistake; he is about his business, but in a way that doesn’t come off arrogant, or egotistical. Rob is a down to earth, honest, and hardworking businessman. Rob Schwartz is owner of WHO?MAG Multimedia, LLC. WHO?MAG is a company dedicated to providing High Quality services to the Urban Entertainment Industry. Rob first began his journey with WHO?MAG DVD, which was a digital video interview series with some of the hottest Independent and mainstream artists. Rob has created an avenue for not only music artists, but also Actors/Actresses, and professional athletes to connect with their fans. Rob caters to a wide audience, and is successful at keeping their attention with his ever growing multimedia company. I recently had the pleasure of meeting up with Rob again to discuss his success thus far, after our mini mentoring session (basically me picking his brain about anything and everything regarding his first initial start in the music industry), I asked Rob a few questions about his journey, about his first 9

The one thing that sticks out in my mind is when I asked him how he dealt with the fear of rejection when first starting out. His answer “For every no, there will be 5 Yes’s!” I love it!! Rob’s passion for music and specifically hip-hop has transcended into a successful business that reaches audiences nationally, as well as internationally. A man with such a great vision, and such great suc-cess, is still courteous, modest, and respectful to his fans. • 12. 12 Cue (thehiphop) or BRI △N Is an upcoming hiphop artist. Born in Washington DC raised in Illinois and Maryland respectively, Cue gained an interest in hiphop at the age of 10. He didn’t begin to write and record music until the age of 14. Cue is currently serving as an active duty soldier in the US ARMY. He uses down time pursuing a career in music. His music stands apart as is not so much about bling and flash as it is about real life and deeper thought processes. At 24yrs old Cue has performed in numerous cities across four different countries and plans to take his music even further in the years to come. Cue is part of a Hiphop based collective called “Senior Project” located in the DMV area of the United States. He currently lives in Venice Italy. T2LE: Where are you originally from? C: My parents were separated so I moved around a lot. I spent most of my younger years in Frederick Maryland so I claim that as my hometown; however I spent a lot of time in Chicago and Richton Park Illinois as a kid. T2LE: What made you choose music? C: Music is the only thing that always makes sense to me. It invokes creation in itself and inspires people to move forward with whatever tasks they pursuit. To me music is life. 12
  • 13. 13 T2LE: Where do you get your video ideas from? C: My videos are usually a mix of fragmented thoughts and images. This is because that’s how my songs are. In my mind at least. Very rarely do I make song that is about one idea or telling one story. It’s a structured mess. Chaotic. T2LE: What are your musical influences? C: Well I grew up listening to a lot of oldies and alternative rock. I didn’t really “get into” hip-hop until I was in middle school. I draw influence and inspiration from all types of music Jazz, classical, rock, house. T2LE: Give us a little background on your new album? What was the inspiration? C: My new Album is called SINS. It’s an acronym for “Shit I Never Said”. Throughout the tape I’m telling my listeners things about myself and my life that I have never reveled before. A couple things that I’ve never told anyone. So this CD is a lot like a confessional. It’s straight rapping for me on here. I didn’t do any singing and kept it 100. The album is set up in two parts. If you listen to it track for track in order, the album will take on a new meaning for you. http://whoiscue.bandcamp.com/yum soundcloud.com/cuethehiphop facebook.com/whoiscue whoiscue.bandcomp.com cuethehiphop.com (site unfinished but you can still visit) Contact-cuethehiphop@ gmail.com

Born & raised on the streets of North Philly I found music to be my outlet. In-fluenced by the likes of Nas, Tupac & Biggie I begin to write little verses here & there. But it wasn’t until I took my talent to the streets where I was cosigned, that I knew I had something. Ever since then, I never stopped. With five solo mixtapes out & a new one on the way in July, & three others with three different groups I was in over the years. I think it’s very fair to say I got work. Kev Ruger 16

  • 22. 220 Tyler Perry is also a huge inspiration Naomi Rose T2LE: Where do you get your musical inspiration? NR: My musical inspiration comes from singing in church and always having a passion for the arts. I was active in ballet, plays, and singing in the choir from age 5 to present. T2LE: Who are your all time favorite artists? NR: I love old school artists because I feel like natural talent had to standout back before technology took over studios. My favorites are Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Phyllis Hyman, Gladys Knight, & Otis Redding. T2LE: How do you feel about the state of Music today, especially how women are portrayed? NR: Honestly, I’m often disappointed by today’s music. I feel like
  • 23. 23 “ lyrics don’t hold any meaning, it’s all about material possessions, & violence. Women are portrayed as nothing less than objects who have to look a certain way & there is little to no respect for them lyric wise. It’s disheartening to me that it’s become so acceptable. T2LE: What inspired you to move to Atlanta? NR: Having gone to college here, I always liked the atmosphere I’m often of Atlanta. Tyler Perry is also a huge inspiration to me & I hope to one day work with him. I just felt like the circuit & disappointed opportunities are broader here so that’s why I made the move. by today’s T2LE: How do you like modeling vs singing? music.” NR: I love singing more than anything, but modeling still puts me in the spotlight to gain exposure. I modeled & directed shows during my college career so it’s still a comfortable space for me. I must say though that I love the flash of the cameras on the runway. T2LE: How old were you when you first started singing, and when did you notice that you were as great as you are? NR: According to my parents, I started singing at age two before I really even started talking. I realized I could sing at age five when I started in the children’s choir at church. I vividly remember imitating Patti LaBelle in the mirror so I guess when I realized I could powerhouse sing like her is when I started to think, “hey kid, you’ve got something special here”. Time 2 Live Ent. the time is now!! 23
  • 24. 24 T2LE: I noticed that you don’t sing any negative, or demeaning music, what inspired you to go this route? NR: I would definitely say my upbringing. I was raised not to compromise myself, respect others, & be proud of doing the right thing so I want my music to inspire & enrich lives. I pride myself on not being the norm so I stick to my guns as an artist. T2LE: What is a normal day like for Naomi Rose? NR: A normal day can consist of staying in & just writing new material or attending casting calls for modeling/acting opportunities, recording in the studio, & searching for opportunities for performances at various venues in Atlanta. T2LE: What other projects can we catch you in? NR: I’ve actually been really busy with modeling lately but I’m hoping to get into some stage play roles within the next few months so I will definitely keep T2L posted on upcoming projects. T2LE: Who is your support system, and just how necessary is it to have a strong one? NR: My mom is my ROCK! She’s been my biggest fan since I used to move around in her belly to Michael Jackson. All of my family & friends in Baltimore, Philly, & New Jersey are very supportive as well. I must also mention my friends Maya & Sylvie in Atlanta who have been ex-tremely supportive with helping me relocate here. It is very necessary to have people like this when you are going after your dream. It’s not easy & some days you want to quit but a strong support system will keep you moving forward. 24

  • 29. 29 T2LE: Can you give us a little bit of history behind your musical background? NZ: According to my mother, I was singing and “humming” before I could crawl, walk or talk. I have a musical family so I was surrounded by music all of the time. Also, both my grandmother and mother are/were singer-songwriters, musicians and musical/choir directors and since I was always with my mother, she was the epitome of “how it’s done!”. Music was all I knew. Around the age of 3, I remember singing in front of large crowds at church programs, concerts/ musicals, etc. If I didn’t have a crowd I would, either, get peoples attention and have them listen to me sing or pretend that I had a crowd of people watching me. I, also, remember traveling and singing at various venues around the U.S. (ie. prisons, national conventions/conferences, concerts, celebrations, etc.) and, like they say, the rest is history. T2LE: Which do you love more, Singing, or music production? NZ: That is a hard one because both singing and musical production are very fulfilling, but in different ways. Singing is, in many cases, very personal, whereas musical production is not as personal. Although people can use both to express/communicate what they desire, singing would be my choice of expression. Being a singer is like you having your own custom-made instrument, that you’ve taken time to 29 mold/design, and being able to play it any and everywhere, at any given time. T2LE: When did you get your first start musically? NZ: Around the age of 3. I remember always volunteering (or being randomly selected) to sing a solo in every choir I was in, whether it was a community choir or a church choir. At times, because I was so small, they would put me on a box so that I could be seen by the audience. I, also, remember traveling and singing with my mom and various choirs she would direct/lead. I was with her 24/7.
  • 30. T2LE: Who are your favorite artists? NZ: I enjoy and respect a wide variety of artists. My all-time favorite is Ms. Lauryn Hill and she has been ever since I was 5yrs old. I was finally able to meet and speak with her, at her Valentine-Day concert at the Hollywood Palladium, 2 years ago and at that moment, I realized why she was my favorite artist of all time. T2LE: What is your favorite thing to do musically? NZ: That is, also, a difficult question. It is difficult considering all I do concerning music (ie. sing/ rap, write, producer/arrange/compose, multi-instrumentalist, vocal coach & teacher, etc.). If I had to pick one thing, it would be singing background for other great artists. That is my favorite thing to do, musically. It feels great being on one accord, with other vocalists, supporting another artist. T2LE: What is your first song you ever sang in front of a live crowd, and how did it feel? NZ: If my memory serves me correctly, it was, “Silver & Gold” by: Kirk Franklin. It was a duet with my aunt, Pollie Latimer, and we would sing at various venues/churches, near and far. I recall singing that particular song, often, at my home church (at the time), “St. Paul Baptist Church” in Oxnard, CA. I was, often, very nervous/shy and still am to this very day, lol. T2LE: When did you know that you had a musical gift? NZ: When I was much younger, I actually thought everyone had a musical gift. Maybe that was because I was surrounded by music at home, church, school, friends & family, family gatherings, etc. Music was all I knew and since I have a musical family, we still, to this day, tend to burst into song at the most random times. T2LE: Where are you currently located, and are you looking to travel? NZ: I am located in Los Angeles, CA. Yes! I would absolutely love to travel more than I already have. For some time now, Dubai has been a place I’ve wanted to go, for business and music. Such an innovative place, from what I hear, and I love the scenery, from what I see in pictures/ videos. -- NATION ZAMAR [Zamar Entertainment Group | Zamar Soundzzz] 1.936.240.0123 www.youtube.com/nationzamar

  • 37. 37 Mainstream Artists VS Independent Artists When you start out as an independent artist, the freedom that comes with it is often difficult to trade in even when the opportunity presents itself to switch over to mainstream music. It’s certainly difficult to say no to mainstream music and the perks that come with it: recognition, record sales and wide spread marketing and distribution. But it does come at the expense of the artists’ creative freedom in many cases. The diversity that indie music showcases goes beyond the terrain that mainstream music explores. Indie rock artists do rely on mainstream labels from time to time to distribute their albums while retaining their autonomy. This works well for both sides as indie artists can continue to explore fresh sounds and subjects, while mainstream labels establish the niche for them. It also lays the foundation for mainstream artists working with them to diversify and evolve. The internet and growth of digital technology has presented quite a few challenges to the music industry. But of the two, indie artists remain the least influenced by these challenges. Digital platforms are in a way a better platform for indie artists to reach out and gain recognition. While it means poor record sales for mainstream artists, it means better marketing for indie artists allowing them to take their music directly to their target audience. Revolutionized in the UK and the US, indie pop and indie rock have proven their strength for decades now. The entry of alternative rock in the 80s’ into mainstream music has since blurred the lines between grunge, alternative rock and indie rock. Their philosophies synchronized into one effort: to remain true to the music, continuously proving their authenticity over the years. Whether it’s the Arctic Monkeys or Demi Lovato, artists themselves try to bring you some of their best efforts. The classifications fall entirely on their ability to land labels or in 37
  • 38. 38 The Importance of Marketing as an Indie Artist To gain an audience an Indie artist needs to learn about marketing. On the bright side, you don’t need to wait to be discovered. You don’t need a major label to take you on. You can make it happen for yourself. In order to this, you need to put yourself out there. It’s worth it. Without marketing, you will remain an unknown. Here are a few ideas to market Indie music. * Build a website - This is a must. It should include biography, samples of your music, and upcoming tours and activities for the indie music scene. * Social media – Be interactive with your soon-to-be fans on social media. The most popular platform for underground artists is YouTube. Don’t limit yourself. Facebook gets a lot of traffic. Engage your visitors by posting samples of your music, upcoming events, and hold contests and giveaways. their strength to explore their options individually. Where indie music stays constant and true to its soul, never marred by the stick-with-the-tried-and-tested ideology, mainstream artists are sometimes herded with their music to ensure success. What started out as underground music has now takers in every city and country across the world. Record labels and producers look for indie groups to partner with mainstream artists on tour to boost ticket sales. At the end of the day, it’s the local support that makes indie artists what they are – musicians closer to home and closer to the social elements wonderfully brought out in their music.
  • 39. Name the file with a popular group in your genre or style, and add a question mark after it. For example, “Unreleased Eminem?” Include the real band name and the URL to your website in the file. Illegal downloaders will distribute your song everywhere, and you will be discovered by a new audience. * Reviews - Many Indie music sites would be interested in reviewing your music. A few examples would be IndieMusicReviewer.com, IndieMusicDigest.com, TheEqualGround.com, Pitchfork.com, and MusicEmissions.com * Align yourself with a nonprofit – Help a charitable organization while gaining publicity. You can offer to give a portion of your proceeds to a worthy cause. * Network with other Indie Artists - Sell your music directly to the public and interact in the Indie music scene with Reverbnation.com, OurStage.com, OurWave.com, and Artists.MTV What are you waiting for? Get out there and market. Create the kind of music that you find inspiring and let everyone know about it. If you think you can get your message out in 140 characters or less, Twitter is a good site to add to your arsenal. * Press release – You can send out a press release online. This should cover your biography, contact information, music demo, and interviews. * Distribute your music worldwide - There are several ways in which you can go about this. Two websites that will accomplish this for you are Tunecore and CDbaby. With both you can have your music distributed to major players like iTunes. They have up to 95+ distribution partners. As the name indicates, CDbaby will also help you to distribute CDs of your music. It’s a great way to quickly get your music all over the world. * Radio Stations - Promote your Indie music to radio stations. Radiodirectx.com offers to promote your music to 5000+ radio and media members. * Sneaky trick – “Leak” one of your singles. 39
