Since its founding in 1976, Habitat for
Humanity International has become a world
leader in poverty housing. The organization
has helped more than 4 million people and
built or repaired more than 800,000 houses.

3.  Although Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization,
its partner families are not given the houses, but instead
purchase them through affordable monthly mortgage
payments. Partner families also spend hundreds of hours
alongside the organization’s volunteers to help build or
renovate the home.
To qualify as a partner family, interested parties should first
contact their local Habitat affiliate to find out the details
of the application process, in addition to the size, location,
and cost of area homes. Generally, the first and most
important qualification for applicant families is their level
of need, especially if they currently live in an unsafe or
crowded home in a dangerous neighborhood and are
not able to qualify for traditional mortgage financing.

4.  Applicants must prove they possess a
steady, reliable income stream that falls
within the program guidelines. If
approved, applicants are also expected
to participate in the program, whether
the home they help build or renovate will
be theirs or not. To help them succeed,
Habitat for Humanity provides approved
applicants with homeowner education
courses.
