3. Fungi
These are:- mushrooms,
toadstools, moulds and
yeast.
(Champignoner, svampe, mug
og gær)
4. They are often made of thin threads
called “hyphæ”
Some of them look like plants
They cannot make their own food (like
plants can)
They reproduce by making “spores”
5. Many fungi are “saprophytes” or
“decomposers”
They feed on dead and decaying
material
The ones that live on or inside other
living things are called “parasites”
6. Respiration
Yeast can respire ærobically (with
oxygen) or anærobically (without
oxygen)
Ærobic respiration makes energy,
carbon dioxide and water
7. Anærobic Respiration
Anærobic respiration produces less
energy, carbon dioxide and ethanol
(alcohol)
Animals do this sort of respiration, too
when we cannot get enough oxygen but
it hurts:- “cramps”
8. Fermentation
We use anærobic respiration in yeast to
make
Alcohol (fermentation)
Carbon dioxide bubbles to make bread
soft and bubbly
9. Using Bacteria
Cheese and yoghurt is made by using
bacteria
Some cheeses have moulds added to
them (e.g.: Danish blue)
The bacteria respire anærobically and
make lactic acid
