3. Objective
• A fourth grade class will explain metamorphic
rock and the processes that form it by making
their own metamorphic rock out of Starburst
candies, listening to part of a podcast reading of
The Magic School Bus Inside the Earth, and
completing the “metamorphic” part of an online
geology WebQuest with 100% accuracy by the
end of the day.
4. Select Methods, Media, Materials
• Podcast: The students will listen to part of The
Magic School Bus Inside the Earth (the part that
discusses metamorphic rock)
• Computers: Students will use computers to
complete the metamorphic part of the WebQuest
• Food: Students will mend and mold Starburst
candies inside of plastic bags to demonstrate
how heat and pressure change rocks.
5. Utilize Media and Materials
• Preview Material: When making or reviewing
the WebQuest, the teacher will ensure that all
sites the students are directed to go to are
appropriate and contain the information needed.
The teacher will listen to the podcast to make
sure it is working.
• Prepare Material: The teacher will book a
computer lab.. The teacher will make sure she
has Starburst candies and a plastic bag for each
student.
6. • Prepare Environment: The teacher will reserve a
computer lab.
• Prepare Learners: The teacher will prepare
students to learn by guiding a discussion about
what they learned the previous day and use that
information to introduce the new topic.
• Provide a Learning Experience: The teacher will
be excited about the material so she might
inspire excitement in her students.
7. Require Learner Participation
• Students will be encouraged to ask questions
throughout the lesson. Students will also
participate by completing their
WebQuest, engaging in the discussion at the
beginning of class, and by using their hands to
show that heat and pressure can change rocks
just like it changes their Starbursts.
8. Evaluate and Revise
• Students will be evaluated based on the accuracy
and completion of their WebQuests
• Students will write a “two minute paper” at the
end of the lesson, describing for 2 minutes what
they learned
