Are Sealants Really Necessary for My Kids Teeth?
If you have kids, you have probably
taken them to the dentist to get
sealants at one point or another but
do you know their purpose?
Sealants are made of plastic
material and are placed in the
fissures of the teeth, particularly
the molars as children sometimes
have difficulty brushing them. This
helps to ensure that the teeth stay
protected.
Usually, it isn't necessary to have sealants applied to your kid’s baby teeth
as they are smoother than adult teeth and are not as prone to cavities. It is
however important to begin regular dental checkups as soon as your baby
gets a few teeth to make sure they are healthy.
Sealants help protect your kid’s teeth against cavities and tooth decay.
Sealants can protect the teeth for anywhere from 5 to 10 years and need to
be checked on a regular basis by your child's dentist. If the dentist notices
that some of the sealants are beginning to away, they will simply reapply
more sealant material. The American Dental Association recommends that
kids get dental sealants as soon as their adult teeth are in.
Sealants are pretty inexpensive costing around $30 to $40 per tooth and are
covered by most dental insurances. It is crucial to remember that sealants
are used for extra protection against cavities and not as a replacement for
good oral hygiene. Practicing good oral hygiene with your children beginning
at an early age is the best way to ensure that they take care of their teeth.
As parents, it is our job to ensure that our kids take care of their teeth and
the only way to do that is for us, the parents, to be well educated when it
comes to our kid’s oral health.
