Paheli Presented By Kedar Sunil Supekar
ABOUT THIS PRESENTATION... Movie “Paheli” by Amol Palekar was flopped movie; but actually I found its story is very important & effective. We are going to understand the exact meaning of the story & its interpretation. Management issue: - WORKLIFE BALANCE This movie is based on the original Rajasthani folk story.
INTRODUCTION It is the story of woman whose name is “Lachchi” in the rural area of Rajasthan. She got married with son (Kishanlal) of the great businessman (Bhanwar Seth) from Navalgarh. Kishanlal was very simple and innocent person. He was always busy in the work related to his business.
MARRIAGE PROCESSION During the marriage procession (Baraat), Kishanlal was busy in tallying accounts after the marriage. He was trying to tally the expenses like flowers, fruits etc. in his marriage instead of attending his wife (Lachchi).
HALT AT REST HOUSE When marriage party halted at rest house, someone says that there are ghosts. Kishanlal’s grandmother convinced to stay at the rest house. It reflects old people too are aware of that “there is no existence of GHOST”. It’s all about imaginations...
HALT AT REST HOUSE CONTD... Though everyone was taking food & rest, Kishanlal was tallying accounts. He could not entertain to her sister too.
GHOST AT REST HOUSE... In the rest house, Lachchi met crow, squirrel & a beautiful bird which were different forms of the GHOST. But there was no ghost; there was a man who fell in love with Lachchi. This man (Ghost) have special qualities which common man doesn’t have. He had pets (Crow, Squirrel & Beautiful bird) which were trained exactly similar to animals & birds in Circus or Magic Shows.
GHOST IN LOVE When marriage party started moving on, ghost realised the existence of Lachchi. Ghost fell in love with Lachchi and started making poems exactly like the man devoted in the love.
FIRST WEDDING NIGHT At first wedding night also, Kishanlal was busy with accounts. Lachchi came in the romantic mood; but still Kishanlal was busy. Kishanlal was busy due to work pressure from his father (BOSS).
FIRST WEDDING NIGHT CONTD... When Lachchi requested Kishanlal to complete the work on next day, Kishanlal told about his “Business Tour” on “Next Day”. Lachchi was shocked. She wanted to go with Kishanlal.
FIRST WEDDING NIGHT CONTD... Kishanlal tried to console her and convince her the importance of his “Business Tour” & Targets.
FIRST WEDDING NIGHT CONTD... Kishanlal was able to understand the Lachchi’s feelings; but could not postpone his work.
GRABBING THE OPPORTUNITY As Kishanlal left the town for his journey, he halted at the same rest house where marriage party & he halted previously. The GHOST (another man) identified the husband of Lachchi. Ghost came in the form of passer-by to know more about Kishanlal & his family to reach to that pretty girl (Lachchi).
GRABBING THE OPPORTUNITY CONTD... He started asking various questions to take out more information from Kishanlal. It’s exactly like “how the skilled salesperson asks questions to the client in the sector of life insurance or investment”.
GRABBING THE OPPORTUNITY CONTD... Now the question comes in the mind that who was that passer-by? The Ghost (another man) can come in front of Kishanlal in the passer-by’s guise. The passer-by may be Ghost’s very ‘closed friend’ or PA.
GRABBING THE OPPORTUNITY CONTD... As Kishanlal was the innocent guy, he explained everything. Ghost came to know that Kishanlal is going for 5 years and he started planning to enter Kishanlal’s house.
MISTAKE BY KISHANLAL In the background, the “Puppets” were explaining the exact meaning of the events. Kishanlal should understand the importance of relationship & feelings behind it.
MISTAKE BY KISHANLAL CONTD... This mistake was not from only Kishanlal; but also his father (Bhanwar Seth) . Rather the whole system.
GHOST = DUPLICATE KISHANLAL Kishanlal resumed his journey and the Ghost took Kishanlal’s guise. Exactly similar to Kishanlal; he was Kishanlal’s impostor. Ghost made the foolproof planning to enter the Kishanlal’s house.
THE STORY ABOUT BOON The Ghost (impostor) pretended like Kishanlal came back and made a story to convince Bhanwarlal. Bhanwarlal too got interested.
THE STORY ABOUT BOON CONTD... Bhanwarlal was so greedy; he wanted to talk about this in the privacy. The Ghost told about the boon that he will get 5 gold coins in the every morning. He increased the level of greediness of Bhanwarlal.
THE STORY ABOUT BOON CONTD... Bhanwarlal believed on this story and considered the Ghost as his own son, Kishanlal. Bhanwarlal allowed the Ghost to stay at home. The Ghost knew the form, mode & amount of bribe required for Bhanwarlal to establish himself in that house (Weaknesses of Bhanwarlal).
UNDERSTANDING THE CULTURE As Kishanlal came back to the home; everybody was happy and excited. Especially Lachchi... The Ghost started to feel the emotions of the mother. He tried to understand the psychology of mother & other family members.
UNDERSTANDING THE CULTURE CONTD... During the complete song “Dheere Jalana”, the Ghost observed each & every thing in the house. This was essential to understand the culture of that family to establish in the place of Kishanlal.
WEDDING NIGHT Assuming that Kishanlal came back, Lachchi was happy & excited. Ghost tried to explain the truth, but Lachchi couldn’t believe.
WEDDING NIGHT CONTD... Lachchi noticed the difference in her husband and she was thinking that Kishanlal is kidding. But Lachchi was unhappy with her real husband (Kishanlal) due to his character.
TELLING THE TRUTH Ghost explained that he’s not Lachchi’s husband. He gave the evidences of Squirrel & the Beautiful Bird at the rest house. He explained about his true love.
TELLING THE TRUTH CONTD... The Puppets explained about the reality. Generally, a man who becomes impostor of Kishanlal will never tell the truth and cheat the bride. But Ghost was the good man and had true love.
ASKING FOR THE CONSENT After telling the truth, Ghost asked the consent to Lachchi to be the life partner. This was emotional question for Lachchi.
ASKING FOR THE CONSENT CONTD... After realising the true love of Ghost, she accepted the Ghost (Impostor) as her husband.
THE ILLUSION In the next morning, Bhanwarlal asked for 5 gold coins. Ghost could not recall. But then said that he already kept those coins.
THE ILLUSION CONTD... Finally father got those gold coins in his inner pocket of vestment. This is exactly similar to the magic trick by a magician(an illusionist). It means, Ghost had the skill of magic tricks.
GHOST WAS HUMAN BEING In the morning, Ghost was in romantic mood and Lachchi was trying to skip. If he would be the Ghost, how he can be afraid of something or someone...
GHOST WAS HUMAN BEING CONTD... But Ghost gets scared of Lachchi’s real husband. This is the another evidence of the Ghost is the Human Being.
OPPOSITION TO SUPERSTITIONS The Ghost was different from the common man and was very practical. He opposed the meaningless traditions & superstitions.
PERMISSION FOR CAMEL RACE Ghost wanted their camels (Ram & Lakhan) to participate in the year’s race. Ghost was highly confident.
PERMISSION FOR CAMEL RACE CONTD... There was an opposition for this race by Bhanwarlal Last time, they lost the race and his younger brother (Sunder) left the house due to shame.
PERMISSION FOR CAMEL RACE CONTD... At the same time, Ghost gave 5 gold coins to father to convince him.
PERMISSION FOR WATER WELL Now Ghost put the request to construct water well & rest house. This was for benefits of villagers as well as business.
PERMISSION FOR WATER WELL CONTD... Father opposed this demand because of huge monetary expenditure. Ghost had deep knowledge of business & economy.
PERMISSION FOR WATER WELL CONTD... Ghost had good knowledge of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) too. Ghost again enchanted father by giving 5 gold coins (by illusion).
PERMISSION FOR WATER WELL CONTD... Kanwar Kaka took out the point which was in Bhanwarlal’s favour. But Ghost used his skill of illusion to convince.
PERMISSION FOR WATER WELL CONTD... Kanwar Kaka & Bhanwarlal got convinced and gave the permission for well & race.
WINNING OF CAMEL RACE Ghost realised the importance of winning the race. He was thinking of well fare of the family always.
WINNING OF CAMEL RACE CONTD... On the day of the Camel Race, Bhanwarlal & Ghost changed the strategy. They changed the riders.
WINNING OF CAMEL RACE CONTD... They changed the strategy according to competitor’s guile which is absolutely ethical.
WINNING OF CAMEL RACE CONTD... Banwari & Phutarmal were not confident. Both lost the control over the camel race. Ghost tried to help to win the race by his power.
WINNING OF CAMEL RACE CONTD... During the race, other camels got diverted by Ghost’s hand movements. Ghost can understand camel’s mind and can control them.
WINNING OF CAMEL RACE CONTD... This was the special skill the Ghost had; not common man.
WINNING OF CAMEL RACE CONTD... Finally Banwari won the race. Diverting other camels and guiding our camel to win the race is possible. For example – Bheem killed “Jarasandh” by following the instruction (Sign Language) given by Shri Krishna. Shooter makes the goal in a soccer match as per the instructions by the Coach.
LACHCHI’S LOVE Lachchi was totally involved in the GHOST. She was afraid of chances of damaging their relationship. People could have doubt that Ghost is not the real Kishanlal.
LACHCHI’S LOVE CONTD... Ghost was very confident about his competencies. Ghost had respect for Lachchi’s love & her words.
LACHCHI BECOME PREGNANT All family members came to know that Lachchi is expectant. But Ghost got tensed; felt uneasy.
LACHCHI BECOME PREGNANT CONTD... Ghost can enjoy; but the issues were What will happen when Kishanlal will return Ultimately Lachchi is going to suffer the problem What about the new born child
GHOST – HUMAN BEING WITH GREAT SPIRIT
LOCATION OF WELL Before getting the permission for well, Ghost was confident and he was successful. This results that Ghost was an expert in locating water source or he had such experts with him.
KISHANLAL CAME BACK Kishanlal came to know that Lachchi is pregnant and he was shocked. There was no communication between Kishanlal & Bhanwar Seth; hence he came back to his home. During the celebration of correct location of water well & rest house, Kishanlal reached to his house (Navalgarh). Everybody was shocked & Confused. Family members of Kishanlal could not recognise the real Kishanlal and they assumed that real Kishanlal is impostor. Villagers & Seths demanded the justice. But Kishanlal was pleading to people believe himself.
KISHANLAL CAME BACK CONTD...
BONDS BETWEEN LACHCHI & GHOST During such commotion, Ghost was balanced and met Lachchi. Lachchi was too balanced. Lachchi gave birth to baby (girl).
SUNDER KAKA RETURNED Finally Sunder came back. He realised his mistake. This was the result of efforts by Ghost.
SUNDER KAKA RETURNED CONTD... Ghost explained the importance of relationships to Sunder Kaka. Ghost was the man with positive attitude & ethics.
PHYLOSOPHY OF GHOST For correct justice, villagers, Kishanlal & Ghost started marching to King. In the way, Kishanlal & Ghost had talks.
PHYLOSOPHY OF GHOST CONTD...
PHYLOSOPHY OF GHOST CONTD...
JUSTICE BY SHEPHERD All people met one shepherd. He assured that he can solve the issue; no need to go to King. He observed both Kishanlal (real son) & Ghost (impostor) and conducted 3 tests.
TEST – 1 This test was to identify “Real Son”.
TEST – 1 CONTD...
TEST – 2 This test was to identify “Real Husband of The Bride”.
TEST – 2 CONTD...
TEST – 3 This was the final test to identify “Real Lover of The Bride” i.e. Ghost.
TEST – 3 CONTD...
TEST – 3 CONTD...
RESULTS OF THE TESTS Shepherd was very clever. He conducted such fair tests; that in Test – 1 & 2, real son & husband (Kishanlal) passed but Ghost (impostor) couldn’t. In test – 3, Ghost passed but it is proved that though Ghost was real lover of Lachchi, he was “not Kishanlal”. In reality, Ghost (impostor) accepted that he’s not Kishanlal because he was not concern about business or money. He was concern about only Lachchi’s Love. The Ghost was trapped into the water bag means the impostor left the place forever or died.
LACHCHI FACED ALL PROBLEMS After listening to the result of the issues, Lachchi had a big emotional shock. Now the problem was how Lachchi can survive with real husband & her child from impostor.
ACCEPTANCE BY THE SOCIETY As the real husband came back, there was again new wedding night. All family members accepted the situations and supported Lachchi.
ACCEPTANCE BY THE SOCIETY CONTD... All family members realised that there was no Lachchi’s fault. And not even of Newborn Child. The society can’t (rather should not) ignore such brides. And should accept the baby too.
REAL HUSBAND OR GHOST On the new wedding night, Lachchi tried to explain everything about the impostor, courageously.
REAL HUSBAND OR GHOST CONTD...
REAL HUSBAND OR GHOST CONTD...
REAL HUSBAND OR GHOST CONTD... Lachchi was surprised by seeing Ghost in her husband’s place. “The Ghost entered into husband’s body” means the husband (Kishanlal) changed himself as the Ghost... When it is proved that impostor is not Kishanlal, impostor explained everything and made Kishanlal wiser so that he can change himself to keep Lachchi happy life long.
CONCLUSION If there is too much work load on an employee, he / she can’t realise the importance of relationships in the life. Improper Work Life balance can ruin the family & dependants of that employee. In case of any woman, there is no assurance that impostor will be honest and ethical. Then that woman will face the biggest problem in her life. In another case, though impostor meets the real husband but husband can’t be capable to change accordingly; so again woman only is going to face all problems.
CONCLUSION CONTD... In this movie, Ghost was not Hero; there was no any Hero or Heroin. Lachchi was the victim and Bhanwarlal Seth was the main culprit (Villain). This fault is of the society too who ignore such incidences. Employee (any person) should not be like Kishanlal (too much innocent & dumb). Employer (any person) should not be like Bhanwarlal Seth (only work oriented & greedy of money). Directly or indirectly woman will face the problems due to POOR Work Life Balance...

Paheli - Work Life Balance

  • 1. Paheli Presented By Kedar Sunil Supekar
  • 4. MARRIAGE PROCESSION During the marriage procession (Baraat), Kishanlal was busy in tallying accounts after the marriage. He was trying to tally the expenses like flowers, fruits etc. in his marriage instead of attending his wife (Lachchi).
  • 5. HALT AT REST HOUSE When marriage party halted at rest house, someone says that there are ghosts. Kishanlal’s grandmother convinced to stay at the rest house. It reflects old people too are aware of that “there is no existence of GHOST”. It’s all about imaginations...
  • 6. HALT AT REST HOUSE CONTD... Though everyone was taking food & rest, Kishanlal was tallying accounts. He could not entertain to her sister too.
  • 8. GHOST IN LOVE When marriage party started moving on, ghost realised the existence of Lachchi. Ghost fell in love with Lachchi and started making poems exactly like the man devoted in the love.
  • 9. FIRST WEDDING NIGHT At first wedding night also, Kishanlal was busy with accounts. Lachchi came in the romantic mood; but still Kishanlal was busy. Kishanlal was busy due to work pressure from his father (BOSS).
  • 10. FIRST WEDDING NIGHT CONTD... When Lachchi requested Kishanlal to complete the work on next day, Kishanlal told about his “Business Tour” on “Next Day”. Lachchi was shocked. She wanted to go with Kishanlal.
  • 11. FIRST WEDDING NIGHT CONTD... Kishanlal tried to console her and convince her the importance of his “Business Tour” & Targets.
  • 12. FIRST WEDDING NIGHT CONTD... Kishanlal was able to understand the Lachchi’s feelings; but could not postpone his work.
  • 14. GRABBING THE OPPORTUNITY CONTD... He started asking various questions to take out more information from Kishanlal. It’s exactly like “how the skilled salesperson asks questions to the client in the sector of life insurance or investment”.
  • 15. GRABBING THE OPPORTUNITY CONTD... Now the question comes in the mind that who was that passer-by? The Ghost (another man) can come in front of Kishanlal in the passer-by’s guise. The passer-by may be Ghost’s very ‘closed friend’ or PA.
  • 16. GRABBING THE OPPORTUNITY CONTD... As Kishanlal was the innocent guy, he explained everything. Ghost came to know that Kishanlal is going for 5 years and he started planning to enter Kishanlal’s house.
  • 17. MISTAKE BY KISHANLAL In the background, the “Puppets” were explaining the exact meaning of the events. Kishanlal should understand the importance of relationship & feelings behind it.
  • 18. MISTAKE BY KISHANLAL CONTD... This mistake was not from only Kishanlal; but also his father (Bhanwar Seth) . Rather the whole system.
  • 20. THE STORY ABOUT BOON The Ghost (impostor) pretended like Kishanlal came back and made a story to convince Bhanwarlal. Bhanwarlal too got interested.
  • 21. THE STORY ABOUT BOON CONTD... Bhanwarlal was so greedy; he wanted to talk about this in the privacy. The Ghost told about the boon that he will get 5 gold coins in the every morning. He increased the level of greediness of Bhanwarlal.
  • 23. UNDERSTANDING THE CULTURE As Kishanlal came back to the home; everybody was happy and excited. Especially Lachchi... The Ghost started to feel the emotions of the mother. He tried to understand the psychology of mother & other family members.
  • 24. UNDERSTANDING THE CULTURE CONTD... During the complete song “Dheere Jalana”, the Ghost observed each & every thing in the house. This was essential to understand the culture of that family to establish in the place of Kishanlal.
  • 25. WEDDING NIGHT Assuming that Kishanlal came back, Lachchi was happy & excited. Ghost tried to explain the truth, but Lachchi couldn’t believe.
  • 26. WEDDING NIGHT CONTD... Lachchi noticed the difference in her husband and she was thinking that Kishanlal is kidding. But Lachchi was unhappy with her real husband (Kishanlal) due to his character.
  • 27. TELLING THE TRUTH Ghost explained that he’s not Lachchi’s husband. He gave the evidences of Squirrel & the Beautiful Bird at the rest house. He explained about his true love.
  • 28. TELLING THE TRUTH CONTD... The Puppets explained about the reality. Generally, a man who becomes impostor of Kishanlal will never tell the truth and cheat the bride. But Ghost was the good man and had true love.
  • 29. ASKING FOR THE CONSENT After telling the truth, Ghost asked the consent to Lachchi to be the life partner. This was emotional question for Lachchi.
  • 30. ASKING FOR THE CONSENT CONTD... After realising the true love of Ghost, she accepted the Ghost (Impostor) as her husband.
  • 31. THE ILLUSION In the next morning, Bhanwarlal asked for 5 gold coins. Ghost could not recall. But then said that he already kept those coins.
  • 32. THE ILLUSION CONTD... Finally father got those gold coins in his inner pocket of vestment. This is exactly similar to the magic trick by a magician(an illusionist). It means, Ghost had the skill of magic tricks.
  • 33. GHOST WAS HUMAN BEING In the morning, Ghost was in romantic mood and Lachchi was trying to skip. If he would be the Ghost, how he can be afraid of something or someone...
  • 34. GHOST WAS HUMAN BEING CONTD... But Ghost gets scared of Lachchi’s real husband. This is the another evidence of the Ghost is the Human Being.
  • 35. OPPOSITION TO SUPERSTITIONS The Ghost was different from the common man and was very practical. He opposed the meaningless traditions & superstitions.
  • 36. PERMISSION FOR CAMEL RACE Ghost wanted their camels (Ram & Lakhan) to participate in the year’s race. Ghost was highly confident.
  • 37. PERMISSION FOR CAMEL RACE CONTD... There was an opposition for this race by Bhanwarlal Last time, they lost the race and his younger brother (Sunder) left the house due to shame.
  • 38. PERMISSION FOR CAMEL RACE CONTD... At the same time, Ghost gave 5 gold coins to father to convince him.
  • 39. PERMISSION FOR WATER WELL Now Ghost put the request to construct water well & rest house. This was for benefits of villagers as well as business.
  • 40. PERMISSION FOR WATER WELL CONTD... Father opposed this demand because of huge monetary expenditure. Ghost had deep knowledge of business & economy.
  • 41. PERMISSION FOR WATER WELL CONTD... Ghost had good knowledge of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) too. Ghost again enchanted father by giving 5 gold coins (by illusion).
  • 42. PERMISSION FOR WATER WELL CONTD... Kanwar Kaka took out the point which was in Bhanwarlal’s favour. But Ghost used his skill of illusion to convince.
  • 43. PERMISSION FOR WATER WELL CONTD... Kanwar Kaka & Bhanwarlal got convinced and gave the permission for well & race.
  • 44. WINNING OF CAMEL RACE Ghost realised the importance of winning the race. He was thinking of well fare of the family always.
  • 45. WINNING OF CAMEL RACE CONTD... On the day of the Camel Race, Bhanwarlal & Ghost changed the strategy. They changed the riders.
  • 46. WINNING OF CAMEL RACE CONTD... They changed the strategy according to competitor’s guile which is absolutely ethical.
  • 47. WINNING OF CAMEL RACE CONTD... Banwari & Phutarmal were not confident. Both lost the control over the camel race. Ghost tried to help to win the race by his power.
  • 48. WINNING OF CAMEL RACE CONTD... During the race, other camels got diverted by Ghost’s hand movements. Ghost can understand camel’s mind and can control them.
  • 49. WINNING OF CAMEL RACE CONTD... This was the special skill the Ghost had; not common man.
  • 51. LACHCHI’S LOVE Lachchi was totally involved in the GHOST. She was afraid of chances of damaging their relationship. People could have doubt that Ghost is not the real Kishanlal.
  • 52. LACHCHI’S LOVE CONTD... Ghost was very confident about his competencies. Ghost had respect for Lachchi’s love & her words.
  • 53. LACHCHI BECOME PREGNANT All family members came to know that Lachchi is expectant. But Ghost got tensed; felt uneasy.
  • 54. LACHCHI BECOME PREGNANT CONTD... Ghost can enjoy; but the issues were What will happen when Kishanlal will return Ultimately Lachchi is going to suffer the problem What about the new born child
  • 55. GHOST – HUMAN BEING WITH GREAT SPIRIT
  • 56. LOCATION OF WELL Before getting the permission for well, Ghost was confident and he was successful. This results that Ghost was an expert in locating water source or he had such experts with him.
  • 59. BONDS BETWEEN LACHCHI & GHOST During such commotion, Ghost was balanced and met Lachchi. Lachchi was too balanced. Lachchi gave birth to baby (girl).
  • 60. SUNDER KAKA RETURNED Finally Sunder came back. He realised his mistake. This was the result of efforts by Ghost.
  • 61. SUNDER KAKA RETURNED CONTD... Ghost explained the importance of relationships to Sunder Kaka. Ghost was the man with positive attitude & ethics.
  • 62. PHYLOSOPHY OF GHOST For correct justice, villagers, Kishanlal & Ghost started marching to King. In the way, Kishanlal & Ghost had talks.
  • 65. JUSTICE BY SHEPHERD All people met one shepherd. He assured that he can solve the issue; no need to go to King. He observed both Kishanlal (real son) & Ghost (impostor) and conducted 3 tests.
  • 66. TEST – 1 This test was to identify “Real Son”.
  • 67. TEST – 1 CONTD...
  • 68. TEST – 2 This test was to identify “Real Husband of The Bride”.
  • 69. TEST – 2 CONTD...
  • 70. TEST – 3 This was the final test to identify “Real Lover of The Bride” i.e. Ghost.
  • 71. TEST – 3 CONTD...
  • 72. TEST – 3 CONTD...
  • 74. LACHCHI FACED ALL PROBLEMS After listening to the result of the issues, Lachchi had a big emotional shock. Now the problem was how Lachchi can survive with real husband & her child from impostor.
  • 75. ACCEPTANCE BY THE SOCIETY As the real husband came back, there was again new wedding night. All family members accepted the situations and supported Lachchi.
  • 76. ACCEPTANCE BY THE SOCIETY CONTD... All family members realised that there was no Lachchi’s fault. And not even of Newborn Child. The society can’t (rather should not) ignore such brides. And should accept the baby too.
  • 77. REAL HUSBAND OR GHOST On the new wedding night, Lachchi tried to explain everything about the impostor, courageously.
  • 78. REAL HUSBAND OR GHOST CONTD...
  • 79. REAL HUSBAND OR GHOST CONTD...
