WELCOME to the Imago Relationships International 8th
Annual Conference!
We invite you to join us on in the shores of Denmark for this truly exceptional event. We are meeting
this year at the Hotel Marienyst, located in the picturesque seaside town of Helsingør (Elsinore) and
a stone’s throw from Kronborg Castle, an elegant fortress made famous by Shakespeare as the setting
for Hamlet. Only a 45 minute train ride from Denmark’s capital city, Copenhagen, this medieval
village boasts views of the Øresund Sound separating Denmark from Sweden. Attendees are encour-
aged to explore local attractions like Kronborg Castle and Helsingør Bymuseum (City Museum).
The 8th
Annual Conference officially opens the morning of Thursday, October 20th
with a perfor-
mance celebrating the works of author Hans Christian Andersen by internationally renowned stage
and screen actress Susse Wold.
ThemorningkeynotewillbepresentedbyImagoco-foundersHarvilleHendrix,Ph.D.andHelen
LaKelly Hunt, Ph.D. Building on the conference theme, they will address the complexities of change
from the perspective of two major contributors to this discussion, Sigmund Freud and The Buddha,
as well as a relative newcomer to the conversation, Imago.
In the afternoon, Anne-Lise Lovlie Schibbye, Ph.D., one of Scandinavia’s foremost thinkers
and writers in the field of clinical psychology, will explore the link between German philosopher
G.W.F. Hegel’s concept of Recognition and its link to psychotherapeutic change. She is followed
by Rich Simon, Ph.D. of the
Psychotherapy Networker,
who will help illuminate a
new vision of professional
community.
Later that evening, join your
colleagues at the Brede Vaerk
Museum for a private viewing
of exhibits that celebrate
Denmark’s rich cultural and
economic history. A tradi-
tional Danish smorgasbord
will follow.
Day two of the conference
(Friday, October 21st
) begins
with “Imago around the
World” led by IRI Executive
Director Tim Atkinson. Later,
members of IRI’s Austrian
community will share their
experiences bringing parents
and children together in a
presentation entitled “The
Generation Dialogue.”
This year we are offering
four concurrent sessions. Two
concurrents will be offered on
Friday at 10:30 am and 3:45
pm. Between these sessions,
our final keynote, Allan Holmgren, M.A., a leading expert in the field of Narrative Therapy, will
examine the strong connection between the establishment of identity and affirmative narratives
about self and others. Afterward, attendees are invited to take a train ride into Copenhagen and enjoy
the sights of this culturally rich city.
Saturday morning (October 22nd
), Rick Stolp, Ph.D. and Jette Simon, Clin. Psych. will discuss
what to do after couples start listening to each other. The final two concurrent sessions will follow
and attendees will have a moment of rest before the evening’s festivities begin.
Saturday evening, attendees will enjoy a fabulous three-course meal featuring traditional Danish
delicacies while celebrating the achievements of peers at the 8th
Annual Imago Awards Ceremony.
The evening’s entertainment begins with the rock/pop music duo the Olsen Brothers and continues
with Route 66, covering the classic hits of the 50’s and 60’s. Route 66 has been brought to the confer-
ence by our generous sponsors, Kærlighed & Kildevand Center for Dialogue.

Psychotherapy exists to serve people in emotional pain
and, specific to Imago Therapy, to help those whose
relationships are at risk.
There are many things a therapist can do to help clients
feel better, particularly providing a sympathetic ear and
perhaps some new perspectives. But the challenge is to
create the kind of deep internal change that supports a
sustainable new direction for the client, one that gradually
limits the need for therapeutic intervention.
A critical step toward lasting change is a change in your
internal narrative. Each of us has a story about who we are
and who are partner is and we have created these stories
or narratives based on our past experiences. The story
usually fits our experience (so we believe it) but the story
itself becomes a trap. There can be no change without
understanding what is left out of our narrative and a shift
to a new and stronger way of looking at ourselves, our
partners, and our world.
ThisjourneyisimplicitinImagoRelationshipTherapy,
with its emphasis on learning about oneself and one’s
partner through dialogues about the present that link to
the emotional past. During this conference, we will have
the opportunity to see how Imago Relationship Therapy
stands within a broader field of narrative psychology in
the tradition of Daniel Stern, Michel Foucault, Michael
White, Kenneth Gergen, Paul Riceur and many others.
Building on the conference theme, Imago
co-founders Harville Hendrix, Ph.D. and Helen
LaKelly Hunt, Ph.D. will address the complexi-
ties of change from the perspective of two major
contributors to this discussion, Sigmund Freud and
The Buddha, as well as a relative newcomer to the
conversation, Imago. Our eminent invited speaker
Allan Holmgren is renowned in his native Denmark
and beyond for his work on how identity and
humanity is established through affirmative narra-
tives about the self and others. He will show how
these principles are applied in narrative-couple-
therapy, to create change through building
narratives that support the relationship.
We are also delighted to welcome Anne-Lise Schibbye
Løvlie, Ph.D., the eminent Swedish psychologist and
author who is particularly well known for her work inte-
grating the philosophies of Hegel and Kierkegaard into
clinical psychology. She will show how Hegel’s concept of
“recognition” can be applied to create therapeutic change.
Hegel believed that our full spirit is developed once
someone coming into self-consciousness is able to clearly
see another’s self-consciousness. For Imago Therapists,
this is expressed in the mirroring and validation inherent
within the Imago Dialogue, the primary tool for creating
change in a couple’s relationship.
Another invited speaker, Rich Simon, Ph.D. has close
ties to Imago, through his wife Jette. Rich is the founder of
thePsychotherapyNetworker,andeachyearbringstogether
the great minds of psychotherapy to explore what makes
therapy effective at creating change. Even the best clinical
approaches cannot be successful unless well applied. Rich
will share insights from those who have achieved clinical
excellence and understand how to maintain it.
Conference Learning Objectives
o Identify the critical elements in Imago
Therapy that must be present in order to
create change
o Recognize the parallels between Narrative
Psychotherapy and Imago and apply them to
improve interventions
o Identify the key concepts of Hegel’s theory of
recognition and apply it therapeutically in an
Imago style intervention
o Recognize three key factors which define
clinical excellence and how to maintain it
o Describe the concept of seeing a person as
a narrative project and understanding how a
change in that narrative can be made
The Purpose of the IRI Annual
Conference
o To provide consistent development and
support for IRI Members
o To host an annual event at which the
community of IRI can connect
o To expand and develop Imago Clinical Theory
and Practice
o To expand the practice, image, and resources
of IRI Members.
o To support and host a Global Summit
“This above all: to
thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as
the night the day,
Thou canst not then be
false to any man.”

Preparation for Committed
Partnership: Singles Clinical
Training (ID: 001)
Wendy Patterson, MSW &
Jette Simon, Clin. Psych.
This course is designed to help therapists
become more effective in preparing their
single clients for a committed relationship
and/or marriage. This training is designed for
relational work in a group setting with theory
and processes to show single people how to
modify their character adaptation in an inti-
mate relationship. In relationship, we were
wounded, and only in relationship can we be
healed. This course is also useful for thera-
pists in doing character work with couples.
The 30 hours of classroom instruction will
be followed by tel-class sessions to be sched-
uled after the conference. All participants
must attended both classroom and tele-class
sessions to receive continuing education
credits. Tele-class sessions are scheduled at
the convenience of the intructor(s). (40 CEs)

Journey of Change (ID: 003)
Maya Kollman, MA &
Sophie Slade, Ph.D.
If you have ever wondered why your partner
(and your clients) find it so difficult to change
even when you’re nice about it and use the
Behavior Change Request Dialogue, join
Maya Kollman and Sophie Slade on a voyage
of personal and professional discovery to
identify ten essential transformational shifts
that couples need to make on the journey of
change through Imago work. Watch 39 years
of Imago experience at work demonstrating
processes you will then practice to help your
clients make these critical shifts. (24 CEs)

Characterological Growth (ID:102)
Maureen Brine, RN, ICADC &
Rick Stolp, Ph.D.
This three-day experience deepens theo-
retical understanding of characterological
adaptations to pain through experiential
processing at a personal level. In the Talmud
there is a quote, “We can’t see the world as it
is; we see it as we are.” This profound training
takes the defense of projection and high-
lights the many ways we put it to use. As long
as projection is available to us, we are out of
connection with ourselves and others. This
personal training is both exquisitely simple
and complex, at the same time. Previous
participants describe the training as “extraor-
dinary and transformational.” (24 CEs)

An Ethics Workshop for Imago
Therapists (ID: 004)
Gene Shelly, M.Div.
This workshop will look at our ethical respon-
sibilities in light of Imago theory and practice.
We will focus on the development of a “best
practices” handbook by looking at many of the
issues and dilemmas that Imago therapists face
every day. Our ethical guide will continue to
be the American Psychological Association
code of ethics. We will process and discuss
in small groups ethical conflicts, issues and
problemsthatarisewithinthepracticesettings
of Imago Relationship Therapists. Then we
will collect our ideas to begin to form the “best
practice” handbook. (3 CEs)

This session provides an opportunity to expe-
rience the development of Imago around the
world. What does it mean to be a member of
the global Imago organization today, and in
the future? How can we join together to more
successfully bring Imago to couples around
the world? How do we all work most effec-
tivelytogether,aslocalImagoGroups,Faculty,

The Generation Dialogue
Sabine Bosel, Roland Bosel, Irene
Christen & Andreas Christen
This special plenary session showcases a
creative new project from Austria. Roland
and Sabine Bosel have established a reputa-
tion as two of the leading couples therapists
in Vienna. They are often on television and
attracthundredsofattendeeseachyeartotheir
“Getting The Love You Want” workshops.
In this session they will share with us their
experience of bringing together parents
and their adult children (age 20 or over) in
“Generation Workshops,” where the dialogue
is used to deepen their connection. Already
more than 15 workshops have been held both
in Vienna and Munich, with over 150 genera-
tion pairs.
Concurrent Sessions I
10:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Considering Money Issues Through
the Relational Lens (ID: 101)
Barbara Mitchell, LCSW
This workshop will apply the recent advances
in the understanding and treatment of money
issues in the couple’s relationship and will
introduce the Imago Therapist to a specific
approach that loosens the gridlock stalling
the relationship. Unraveling the individual
and relational messages hidden in the “money
problem” enables the therapist to deepen the
treatment. (2 CEs)
10:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Living Together Loneliness: A
Dialogical Approach (ID: 102)
Pat Love, Ed.D & Eva Berlander
Loneliness among married and committed
couples is purported in growing numbers
throughout the US, Europe, and Scandan-
avia. Given that 80% of couples cite “growing
apart” as the reason for divorce or separations,
it’s easy to see the threat loneliness poses to
happiness and stability in relationships. Short
lecture, demonstration and experiential exer-
cises will be used to make this presentation
both personally and professionally rewarding.

Male and Female Perspectives of
Love and Life (ID: 103)
Anders Avemo, Psychiatrist &
Hannah Engel, Clin. Psych.
Men and women are different: genetically,
biologically, and culturally. Understanding
this can offer us a greater appreciation for
who we are. Our gender differences have been
partly denied. The Behavior Change Request

Growing the Light in Relational
Darkness (ID: 104)
Josh Gressel, Ph.D.
How do we help our clients learn the skill
to focus on the light and learn to trust that
through this focus the positive can gain the
upper hand in their conflict? Keeping hope
alive when there doesn’t seem to be any is one
of the major challenges of staying in connec-
tion. The couple needs to learn the skill of
hope, a skill that can be practiced with proper
instruction and modeling. In this workshop
we will study a passage from Reb Nachman
of Bratslav, an 18th
century Hasidic master
who suffered from severe depression and who
taught specific strategies for finding light when
all seems lost. (2 CEs)

Narrative Therapy with Couples:
From Fighters to Friends
Keynote Speaker: Allan Holmgren, MA
The keynote presentation will unfold the
central point that identity and humanity is
established through affirmative narratives
about self and others in mutual relationships.
If expressions and intentions are not affirmed
in relationships you are left with loneliness,
despair, depression and anxiety because of
such daily traumatic experiences.
Both stress and depression are related to the
experience of loneliness. The most efficient
antidote to stress and depression is couple
therapy and where discussion and direct
dialogue between the partners are not allowed.
And individual therapy with responses from
outsiderwitnessesisalsoextremelyhelpfuland
efficient. The mantra is: Get out of the fight!
Narrative therapy is based both on cultural
psychology and on poststructuralist philos-
ophy. There is no such thing as an inner
core-self without its continuous production
in relationships. The Self and the auto-biog-
raphy is extremely fragile, fragmented and
consists of many voices with different and
often contradictory statements and intentions.
There will be DVD-excerpts from narrative
couple-therapy as an integrated part of the
keynote-presentation. (1.5 CEs)
Concurrent Sessions II
3:45 –5:45 PM
New Consultation Methods (ID: 201)
Wendy Patterson, LCSW, LMFT &
Jette Simon, Clin. Psych.
This workshop is for Certified Imago Consul-
tants and is designed to offer our latest
thinking about working with therapists who
are working with couples and trauma. We will
explore a framework for assisting the consul-
tant to coach the Imago couple’s therapist in
working through the relational paradigm with
couples experiencing trauma and the subse-
quent reactivity that occurs. (2 CEs)

Sex on the Download: When the
Internet Disconnects You from Your
Relationship (ID: 202)
Tammy Nelson, Ph.D. & Joe Kort, Ph.D.
This presentation will teach Imago Therapist’s
ways to treat compulsive internet behaviors
with Imago dialogical techniques without
pathologizing all internet use. Pornog-
raphy use may satisfy many individual
needs, unrelated to psychopathology or
sexual dysfunction. These behaviors may be
“gateway” behaviors to other more problematic
relationship issues. (2 CEs)

The Challenge of Connection:
Using the ImagoGram Structured
Interview Schedule (ID:203)
Tamar Zohar Harel, MSW, Ph.D. &
Leora Grunhaus, MSW
The challenge and success of connecting IRT
and the multigenerational family systems
model of human functioning as adaptation
models will be discussed. The focus will be
on clinical practice, supervision and training
issues. Lecture, experiential, demonstrations
and analysis will be included. (2 CEs)

The Silent Man and the Emotional
Woman: Stereotypes in Couple
Therapy (ID: 204)
Allan Holmgren, MA
This workshop will show excerpts from narra-
tive couples therapy that show the importance
of telling the stories of traumatic experiences
both partners in a couple have. The partici-
pants will be involved in exercises that give an
experience of the power of narrative therapy.

Working with Early-Wounded
Couples: Moving From Critical to
Connected Using Body-Centered
Visualization (ID: 205)
Katy Remark, Ph.D.
Techniques from other modalities can be inte-
grated into the couple’s session enhancing the
Imago experience and fostering a deepening
of connection in the couple. These techniques
can be successfully used with early-wounded
couples exhibiting symbiotic connection and
an Inner Critic projected onto the partner and
relationship. This workshop will demonstrate
how to integrate healing techniques into an
couple’s session with particular focus on three
themes: Calling on the Will, Symbiosis and
the Inner Critic. (2 CEs)

Methods in Imago Clinical Practice:
What Do You Do After They Are
Listening?
Rick Stolp, Ph.D. &
Jette Simon, Clin. Psych.
Highly charged couples are often difficult
for the therapist/coach to manage. Sometimes
the mere act of having couples face each other
stirs up immediate reactivity and it is hard to
help hold them in Dialogue. This session is
designed to provide the therapist/coach with
tools that will help the couple learn to listen
to one another and by-pass much of the reac-
tivity that often unfolds in sessions. Listening

Deeper Understanding of the BCR
Dialogue (ID: 301)
Bruce Crapuchettes, Ph.D. &
Francine Beauvoir, Ph.D.
In Imago work, marriage problems are
not solved or even solvable, only healable.
Healing occurs when needs are met that
were not met in childhood. This session will
not only underscore the importance of the
BCR Dialogue, but will increase your skill in
using it and in developing an in-depth under-
standing of its strategy. You will receive an
eight page handout. (2 CEs)

Developing Connective Self-
Regulation: Integrating Heart, Body
and Brain in Imago Work (ID: 302)
Helge Poulsen & Britt Eriksson
We will guide participants through an inte-
grative understanding of the heart, body, and
brain perspective. By being in contact with
our heart and present in heartful awareness
we can enhance empathy for ourselves and our
partners. The concept of connective self-regu-
lation describes how the corrective emotional
and relational experience gives birth to
enhanced connectivity and differentiation in
the relationship. It repairs disconnection from
the past and slowly transforms attachment
patterns. (2 CEs)

Inspire to Rewire: Using Imago to
Facilitate Safe Attachment and
Form New Pathways in the Brain
(ID: 303)
Eva Berlander
Eva takes us by the hand and leads us through
the landscapes of differences, intimacy, neuro-
biology and love. With nearly twenty years of
experience working with couples, she inspires
us to learn the essential shifts we all need to
make, in order for us to achieve lasting change
– and loving relationships. Her tools are
interpersonal neurobiology, mental training,
mindfulness, and the brilliance of Imago Rela-
tionship Therapy. Get inspired to rewire your
personal and professional life. (2 CEs)

The Appreciative and Attuned
Therapist: Keys to Connecting
Challenging Couples (ID: 304)
Rebecca Sears, M.Div., LPC
This interactive workshop focuses on how
the Imago Therapist can create, develop
and sustain a culture of appreciation amidst
conflict. Together we will delve into skills for
“leading from appreciation” in even the most
challenging of situations. While using and
accentuating the healing beliefs of the thera-
pist, learning targeted Dialogues/stems and
psycho-educational pieces, we will progress
down the path of Imago artistry. Videos and
demonstrations included. (2 CEs)
Concurrent Sessions IV
3:45 – 5:45 PM
Connecting with Self and Other
(ID: 401)
Sophie Slade, Ph.D. &
Sherry Stolp, MA, LPCA
In our continuing series on the developmental
stages, we will address the Identity Stage of
development. Through use of theory, video
clips and case examples we will help partici-
pants deepen their understanding of how
identity stage adaptations present challenges
to connection in couple relationships and how
developmentally savvy clinicians can dance
therapeutically with these couples, as they
struggle with the core dilemma of having a self
and being in relationship. (2 CEs)
3:45 – 5:45 PM
Using Heart Rate Variability
Biofeedback to Assist the Dialogue
Process with Highly Reactive
Couples (ID: 402)
Walter J. Ciecko, Ph.D., BCB
Highly reactive couples struggle to gain
personal safety and constructive movement in
their interactions with each other. The Imago
Therapist will gain an awareness of HRV
biofeedback as an adjunctive aid to creating
greater intentionality and less reactivity in
couple interactions with each other. A struc-
tured dialogue process for use with highly
reactive couples that promotes safety and curi-
osity will be demonstrated. (2 CEs)
3:45 – 5:45 PM
How to Deepen Imago Couples Work
with Hypnotherapy (ID: 403)
Jannie Kildested, Cand. Psych.
This session will offer a live demonstration
of the Parent/Child dialogue combined with
hypnotherapy. There will be a short lecture
on unfounded jealousy that will outline how
to use either hypnoanalysis or classical hypno-
therapy to help address it. A videotaped case
study may be presented. (2 CEs)

D., of Imago Relationship Therapy and
the concept of the “conscious partner-
ship.” Harville is author of two best sellers,
Getting The Love You Want: A Guide for
Couples and Keeping The Love You Find:
A Guide for Singles, and a third best seller,
co-authored with Helen, Giving The Love

International, a non-profit professional organization that supports 2,000 Imago Therapists practicing in 30 countries. Harville has made
seventeen appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show, one of which won her first Emmy Award and was ranked by Ms Winfrey in her top twenty
shows. He is a clinical pastoral counselor with who has focused exclusively on couples for over 30 years as a therapist, educator, clinical trainer,
author, public lecturer and has received many awards for his work with couples. He lives with his wife in New York and New Mexico and they
have six children and five grandchildren.
Helen LaKelly Hunt, Ph.D. has had the honor of being beside Harville the last 33 years. When Imago was only a glimmer in his eye, she
helped in various ways with his writings and the founding of Imago. She has also been active within the women’s movement, working in behalf of
many women’s organizations. She is an inductee in the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, New York. In 2005, Helen co-conceived
and co-chaired Women Moving Millions, a campaign to give to women’s funds at unprecedented levels. Helen also wroteFaith and Feminism:
A Holy Alliance, which was published by Atria books and co-authored seven books with Harville.

Anne-Lise Løvlie Schibbye, Ph.D. is Associate Professor
Emeritus from the University of Oslo, Norway, where she taught psycho-
analyticallyorientedpsychotherapyforindividuals,couplesandfamilies.
Before that she was assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology,
Children´s Division, Shands Teaching Hospital, University of Florida.
Her main research has been on relationships, an interest which started
with studies and clinical work in the US in the late 50’s and 60’s, culmi-
nating in the bookRelations–ADialecticPerspectiveonExistentialand
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy(2009).

therapyNetworker,themosttopical,timelyandwidelyreadpublication
in the psychotherapy field. A clinical psychologist by training, he has
received every major magazine industry honor, including the National
Magazine Award, widely considered the industry’s Oscar. By his own
estimate, he has put in over 75,000 hours developing his editing skills
and obsessing over every single word ever published in the Networker.
The resulting lack of opportunity to practice his skill in basketball,
singing Broadway show tunes and playing the stock market may account
for his relatively low skill level in these various endeavors, confirming
many current theories about the prerequisites for performance mastery.
Allan Holmgren, MA istheDirectorofDISPUK,whichhefounded
in 1990. He received his Magister in Psychology from University of
Copenhagen in 1981. He is a professor in coaching as a leadership
tool at the Institute of Leadership, Politics and Philosophy and an
authorized Psychologist and an approved specialist and supervisor in
work and organizational psychology and psychotherapy. He is on the
board of the European Family Therapy Association and is Chair of
the organization of psychotherapeutic institutes in Denmark (SPUD).
His primary focus is on coaching, conflict resolution, and supervision.
He has experience with many therapeutic processes, particularly with
people with serious mental conditions. His book, Par i terapi (Couples
in Therapy) was published by Munksgaard in 2002.

ARCHEOLOGICAL evidence suggests Copenhagen
existed as a small fishing settlement more than 6,ooo years
ago but it wasn’t until the 11th
century that it was given the
name Kømandshavn (merchant’s port), later shortened to
København. Today, it is the largest city in Scandinavia and
considered the cultural center of Northern Europe.
As the capital of the oldest surviving kingdom in the
world, Copenhagen has many landmarks and architectural
gems that speak to its royal heritage. There are four palaces
located right in the heart of the city, the most celebrated
of which is Amalienborg Palace, the official residence
of Queen Margrethe ll. Considered a superb example of
Danish Rococo architecture, Amalienborg is actually
composed of four separate yet equally magnificent resi-
dences arranged in an octagonal pattern around a central
square. This unique royal structure is one of the most
popular tourist attractions in the city and offers frequent
public tours.
In the center of the city stands The Rundetaarn or the
round tower, Europe’s oldest functioning observatory. The
curious have glimpsed the stars from atop this structure
since 1642. There is an outdoor platform at its summit
that offers fantastic views of the city. A short distance away,
you’ll find Rosenborg Palace. Built in 16o6 as a retreat for
King Christian IV, it is now home to an extensive collec-
tion of royal artifacts. The Botanical Gardens sit right next
to the palace, so don’t miss the opportunity to visit 25 acres
of beautifully landscaped gardens. Across the city, Ny
Carlsberg Glyptotek, a museum of ancient and modern
art offers 3,500 years of art and history within impressive
architectural surroundings.
Just outside the city you’ll find Bakken, the world’s
oldest amusement park. Nestled in the Dyrehaven Woods,
this magical playland has enthralled residents of Copen-
hagen for over 400 years. No less enchanting and more
centrally located is Tivoli Gardens, an alluring landscape
of ferris wheels, exotic flowers, outdoor cafés, and a 19th
century pantomime theater.
While Copenhagen celebrates its rich and royal
history, the city also boasts several astonishing modern
architectural masterpieces. The Royal Opera, with an
interior design based on behavioral research of opera-
goers, features seats individually adjusted to maximize
the acoustic experience and a foyer with some of the best
views of the city. By night, the striking geometric exterior
of this marvelous structure is ablaze in light. Another
modern wonder is the main building of The Royal
Library, known as The Black Diamond. Constructed of
highly polished black granite, this monolithic structure
looms over the harbor.
One of the things that make Copenhagen such a great
place to shop is that you can do it all by foot. Be sure to
stroll along the world’s longest pedestrian street, Strøget,
linedwithawidevarietyofboutiqueshopsandrestaurants.
Enjoy al fresco dinning in Nyhavn, the old port of Copen-
hagen, home to an eclectic collection of pubs, alehouses,
Michelin-rated restaurants, and once home (number 20) to
Hans Christian Andersen.
ThenightlifeinCopenhagengetsofftoalatestart.Most
clubs open after midnight, but there are plenty of things to
do once the sun goes down. You’ll find a wide variety of
places for live music, trendy drinks, or a glass of Carlsberg
Beer. Take a few hours and do as the locals do, settle down
in a bar or café for some hygge.

ELSINORE(HelsingørinDanish)
is a seaside town of half-timbered
dwellings and cobblestone streets
linedwithrestaurants,shops,and
cafés. It is the home of Kronborg
Castle, the setting for Hamlet
and the final resting place of one
of Denmark’s greatest legends,
Holger the Dane. After touring
the moats, bastions and damp
casements of this elegant Renaissance fortress, visit Handels og Søfartsmuseet (The Danish
Maritime Museum) located on the castle’s first floor. The museum tells the story of Danish
maritime history, from the colonies in the West Indies to ship building in Elsinore, with photo-
graphs, models and exhibits.
Just north of the castle you will find The Øresund Aquarium, or Oresundsakvariet. This
small salt-water aquarium hosts species of fish and vegetation native the Øresund Sound. The
Danmarks Tekniske Museum (Technical Museum of Denmark) is a short bus ride from the
Grand Railway Station of Elsinore. Housed in a former iron foundry, the museum features a
large collection of steam engines, cars, airplanes and other inventions with particular emphasis
on Danish achievements in science and industry. In addition to an impressive aviation collection,
the museum offers a glimpse of the world’s first typewriter and the 1886 Hammel which, as far as
is known, is the oldest original automobile that still operates.
A short train ride from Elsinore is the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, which boasts
a collection of over 3,000 works of art by masters like Picasso, Giacometti, Andy Warhol,
Rauschenberg, Louise Bourgeois and Philip Guston, to name a few. If you’d prefer a museum
within walking distance, try a visit to Helsingør Bymuseum (City Museum). Housed in a
building almost 500 years old, parts of it build by the Carmelite monks, this museum contains
exhibits relating to the early history of the structure as a hospital, a lavish manor and later, the
city’s poorhouse. There are exhibits dedicated to the history of the city, which dates back to
medieval times, but the museum’s most popular attraction is an amazingly detailed 1:300 scale
model of Elsinore circa 1801.
Marienlyst Slot (Marienlyst Palace), built as a royal pavilion in the 16th
century to offer
royalty a view of the Sound, is often overshadowed by Kronborg Castle, but don’t miss this
superb example of neoclassical architecture and the amazing views from its gardens.
Elsinore boasts over 250 stores and restaurants. Its downtown has been set aside as the pedes-
trian zone and is home to many fabulous and cozy shops. There are bakeries, beauty salons,
bookstores, fresh produce shops, and boutiques catering to any shopping need. But if you need
a change of scenery, Elsinore is the closest Danish city to Sweden and ferries set out regularly
across the Sound to Helsingborg.
The Grand Railway Station is a gorgeous gateway to many attractions (including Copen-
hagen) and just outside of its doors, visitors can find valuable tourist information. Stop there for
information before you explore this wonderful region of Denmark.

  • 3. 1 WELCOME to the Imago Relationships International 8th Annual Conference! We invite you to join us on in the shores of Denmark for this truly exceptional event. We are meeting this year at the Hotel Marienyst, located in the picturesque seaside town of Helsingør (Elsinore) and a stone’s throw from Kronborg Castle, an elegant fortress made famous by Shakespeare as the setting for Hamlet. Only a 45 minute train ride from Denmark’s capital city, Copenhagen, this medieval village boasts views of the Øresund Sound separating Denmark from Sweden. Attendees are encour- aged to explore local attractions like Kronborg Castle and Helsingør Bymuseum (City Museum). The 8th Annual Conference officially opens the morning of Thursday, October 20th with a perfor- mance celebrating the works of author Hans Christian Andersen by internationally renowned stage and screen actress Susse Wold. ThemorningkeynotewillbepresentedbyImagoco-foundersHarvilleHendrix,Ph.D.andHelen LaKelly Hunt, Ph.D. Building on the conference theme, they will address the complexities of change from the perspective of two major contributors to this discussion, Sigmund Freud and The Buddha, as well as a relative newcomer to the conversation, Imago. In the afternoon, Anne-Lise Lovlie Schibbye, Ph.D., one of Scandinavia’s foremost thinkers and writers in the field of clinical psychology, will explore the link between German philosopher G.W.F. Hegel’s concept of Recognition and its link to psychotherapeutic change. She is followed by Rich Simon, Ph.D. of the Psychotherapy Networker, who will help illuminate a new vision of professional community. Later that evening, join your colleagues at the Brede Vaerk Museum for a private viewing of exhibits that celebrate Denmark’s rich cultural and economic history. A tradi- tional Danish smorgasbord will follow. Day two of the conference (Friday, October 21st ) begins with “Imago around the World” led by IRI Executive Director Tim Atkinson. Later, members of IRI’s Austrian community will share their experiences bringing parents and children together in a presentation entitled “The Generation Dialogue.” This year we are offering four concurrent sessions. Two concurrents will be offered on Friday at 10:30 am and 3:45 pm. Between these sessions, our final keynote, Allan Holmgren, M.A., a leading expert in the field of Narrative Therapy, will examine the strong connection between the establishment of identity and affirmative narratives about self and others. Afterward, attendees are invited to take a train ride into Copenhagen and enjoy the sights of this culturally rich city. Saturday morning (October 22nd ), Rick Stolp, Ph.D. and Jette Simon, Clin. Psych. will discuss what to do after couples start listening to each other. The final two concurrent sessions will follow and attendees will have a moment of rest before the evening’s festivities begin. Saturday evening, attendees will enjoy a fabulous three-course meal featuring traditional Danish delicacies while celebrating the achievements of peers at the 8th Annual Imago Awards Ceremony. The evening’s entertainment begins with the rock/pop music duo the Olsen Brothers and continues with Route 66, covering the classic hits of the 50’s and 60’s. Route 66 has been brought to the confer- ence by our generous sponsors, Kærlighed & Kildevand Center for Dialogue. • 4. 2 CREATING CHANGE The challenge of Kronborg Castle stands watch over the seaward approach to Øresund Sound. This elegant Renaissance castle and military fortress surrounded by bastions and ravelins, was used by Shakespeare as the setting for Hamlet.
  • 5. 3 Psychotherapy exists to serve people in emotional pain and, specific to Imago Therapy, to help those whose relationships are at risk. There are many things a therapist can do to help clients feel better, particularly providing a sympathetic ear and perhaps some new perspectives. But the challenge is to create the kind of deep internal change that supports a sustainable new direction for the client, one that gradually limits the need for therapeutic intervention. A critical step toward lasting change is a change in your internal narrative. Each of us has a story about who we are and who are partner is and we have created these stories or narratives based on our past experiences. The story usually fits our experience (so we believe it) but the story itself becomes a trap. There can be no change without understanding what is left out of our narrative and a shift to a new and stronger way of looking at ourselves, our partners, and our world. ThisjourneyisimplicitinImagoRelationshipTherapy, with its emphasis on learning about oneself and one’s partner through dialogues about the present that link to the emotional past. During this conference, we will have the opportunity to see how Imago Relationship Therapy stands within a broader field of narrative psychology in the tradition of Daniel Stern, Michel Foucault, Michael White, Kenneth Gergen, Paul Riceur and many others. Building on the conference theme, Imago co-founders Harville Hendrix, Ph.D. and Helen LaKelly Hunt, Ph.D. will address the complexi- ties of change from the perspective of two major contributors to this discussion, Sigmund Freud and The Buddha, as well as a relative newcomer to the conversation, Imago. Our eminent invited speaker Allan Holmgren is renowned in his native Denmark and beyond for his work on how identity and humanity is established through affirmative narra- tives about the self and others. He will show how these principles are applied in narrative-couple- therapy, to create change through building narratives that support the relationship. We are also delighted to welcome Anne-Lise Schibbye Løvlie, Ph.D., the eminent Swedish psychologist and author who is particularly well known for her work inte- grating the philosophies of Hegel and Kierkegaard into clinical psychology. She will show how Hegel’s concept of “recognition” can be applied to create therapeutic change. Hegel believed that our full spirit is developed once someone coming into self-consciousness is able to clearly see another’s self-consciousness. Psych. This course is designed to help therapists become more effective in preparing their single clients for a committed relationship and/or marriage. This training is designed for relational work in a group setting with theory and processes to show single people how to modify their character adaptation in an inti- mate relationship. In relationship, we were wounded, and only in relationship can we be healed. This course is also useful for thera- pists in doing character work with couples. The 30 hours of classroom instruction will be followed by tel-class sessions to be sched- uled after the conference. All participants must attended both classroom and tele-class sessions to receive continuing education credits. Tele-class sessions are scheduled at the convenience of the intructor(s). Unraveling the individual and relational messages hidden in the “money problem” enables the therapist to deepen the treatment. (2 CEs) 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM Living Together Loneliness: A Dialogical Approach (ID: 102) Pat Love, Ed.D & Eva Berlander Loneliness among married and committed couples is purported in growing numbers throughout the US, Europe, and Scandan- avia. Given that 80% of couples cite “growing apart” as the reason for divorce or separations, it’s easy to see the threat loneliness poses to happiness and stability in relationships. Short lecture, demonstration and experiential exer- cises will be used to make this presentation both personally and professionally rewarding. (2 CEs) 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM Male and Female Perspectives of Love and Life (ID: 103) Anders Avemo, Psychiatrist & Hannah Engel, Clin. Psych. Men and women are different: genetically, biologically, and culturally. Understanding this can offer us a greater appreciation for who we are. Our gender differences have been partly denied. (2 CEs) 10:30 AM –12:30 PM Growing the Light in Relational Darkness (ID: 104) Josh Gressel, Ph.D. How do we help our clients learn the skill to focus on the light and learn to trust that through this focus the positive can gain the upper hand in their conflict? Keeping hope alive when there doesn’t seem to be any is one of the major challenges of staying in connec- tion. The couple needs to learn the skill of hope, a skill that can be practiced with proper instruction and modeling. In this workshop we will study a passage from Reb Nachman of Bratslav, an 18th century Hasidic master who suffered from severe depression and who taught specific strategies for finding light when all seems lost. (2 CEs) 12:30 PM– 2:00 PM Buffet Lunch Complimentary for conference attendees. 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM Narrative Therapy with Couples: From Fighters to Friends Keynote Speaker: Allan Holmgren, MA The keynote presentation will unfold the central point that identity and humanity is established through affirmative narratives about self and others in mutual relationships. If expressions and intentions are not affirmed in relationships you are left with loneliness, despair, depression and anxiety because of such daily traumatic experiences. Both stress and depression are related to the experience of loneliness. The most efficient antidote to stress and depression is couple therapy and where discussion and direct dialogue between the partners are not allowed. And individual therapy with responses from outsiderwitnessesisalsoextremelyhelpfuland efficient. The mantra is: Get out of the fight! Narrative therapy is based both on cultural psychology and on poststructuralist philos- ophy. There is no such thing as an inner core-self without its continuous production in relationships. The Self and the auto-biog- raphy is extremely fragile, fragmented and consists of many voices with different and often contradictory statements and intentions. There will be DVD-excerpts from narrative couple-therapy as an integrated part of the keynote-presentation. (1.5 CEs) Concurrent Sessions II 3:45 –5:45 PM New Consultation Methods (ID: 201) Wendy Patterson, LCSW, LMFT & Jette Simon, Clin. Psych. This workshop is for Certified Imago Consul- tants and is designed to offer our latest thinking about working with therapists who are working with couples and trauma. We will explore a framework for assisting the consul- tant to coach the Imago couple’s therapist in working through the relational paradigm with couples experiencing trauma and the subse- quent reactivity that occurs. (2 CEs) 3:45 – 5:45 PM Sex on the Download: When the Internet Disconnects You from Your Relationship (ID: 202) Tammy Nelson, Ph.D. & Joe Kort, Ph.D. This presentation will teach Imago Therapist’s ways to treat compulsive internet behaviors with Imago dialogical techniques without pathologizing all internet use. Pornog- raphy use may satisfy many individual needs, unrelated to psychopathology or sexual dysfunction. These behaviors may be “gateway” behaviors to other more problematic relationship issues. (2 CEs) 3:45 – 5:45 PM The Challenge of Connection: Using the ImagoGram Structured Interview Schedule (ID:203) Tamar Zohar Harel, MSW, Ph.D. & Leora Grunhaus, MSW The challenge and success of connecting IRT and the multigenerational family systems model of human functioning as adaptation models will be discussed. The focus will be on clinical practice, supervision and training issues. Lecture, experiential, demonstrations and analysis will be included. (2 CEs) 3:45 – 5:45 PM The Silent Man and the Emotional Woman: Stereotypes in Couple Therapy (ID: 204) Allan Holmgren, MA This workshop will show excerpts from narra- tive couples therapy that show the importance of telling the stories of traumatic experiences both partners in a couple have. The partici- pants will be involved in exercises that give an experience of the power of narrative therapy. (2 CEs) 3:45– 5:45 PM Working with Early-Wounded Couples: Moving From Critical to Connected Using Body-Centered Visualization (ID: 205) Katy Remark, Ph.D. Techniques from other modalities can be inte- grated into the couple’s session enhancing the Imago experience and fostering a deepening of connection in the couple. These techniques can be successfully used with early-wounded couples exhibiting symbiotic connection and an Inner Critic projected onto the partner and relationship. This workshop will demonstrate how to integrate healing techniques into an couple’s session with particular focus on three themes: Calling on the Will, Symbiosis and the Inner Critic. (2 CEs) October 22, 2011 7:30 – 8:45 AM Continental Breakfast Complimentary for guests of the hotel. 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM Registration 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Methods in Imago Clinical Practice: What Do You Do After They Are Listening? Rick Stolp, Ph.D. & Jette Simon, Clin. Psych. Highly charged couples are often difficult for the therapist/coach to manage. Sometimes the mere act of having couples face each other stirs up immediate reactivity and it is hard to help hold them in Dialogue. This session is designed to provide the therapist/coach with tools that will help the couple learn to listen to one another and by-pass much of the reac- tivity that often unfolds in sessions. • 21. 19 ARCHEOLOGICAL evidence suggests Copenhagen existed as a small fishing settlement more than 6,ooo years ago but it wasn’t until the 11th century that it was given the name Kømandshavn (merchant’s port), later shortened to København. Today, it is the largest city in Scandinavia and considered the cultural center of Northern Europe. As the capital of the oldest surviving kingdom in the world, Copenhagen has many landmarks and architectural gems that speak to its royal heritage. There are four palaces located right in the heart of the city, the most celebrated of which is Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of Queen Margrethe ll. Considered a superb example of Danish Rococo architecture, Amalienborg is actually composed of four separate yet equally magnificent resi- dences arranged in an octagonal pattern around a central square. This unique royal structure is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city and offers frequent public tours. In the center of the city stands The Rundetaarn or the round tower, Europe’s oldest functioning observatory. The curious have glimpsed the stars from atop this structure since 1642. There is an outdoor platform at its summit that offers fantastic views of the city. A short distance away, you’ll find Rosenborg Palace. Built in 16o6 as a retreat for King Christian IV, it is now home to an extensive collec- tion of royal artifacts. The Botanical Gardens sit right next to the palace, so don’t miss the opportunity to visit 25 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. Across the city, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, a museum of ancient and modern art offers 3,500 years of art and history within impressive architectural surroundings. Just outside the city you’ll find Bakken, the world’s oldest amusement park. Nestled in the Dyrehaven Woods, this magical playland has enthralled residents of Copen- hagen for over 400 years. No less enchanting and more centrally located is Tivoli Gardens, an alluring landscape of ferris wheels, exotic flowers, outdoor cafés, and a 19th century pantomime theater. While Copenhagen celebrates its rich and royal history, the city also boasts several astonishing modern architectural masterpieces. The Royal Opera, with an interior design based on behavioral research of opera- goers, features seats individually adjusted to maximize the acoustic experience and a foyer with some of the best views of the city. By night, the striking geometric exterior of this marvelous structure is ablaze in light. Another modern wonder is the main building of The Royal Library, known as The Black Diamond. Constructed of highly polished black granite, this monolithic structure looms over the harbor. One of the things that make Copenhagen such a great place to shop is that you can do it all by foot. Be sure to stroll along the world’s longest pedestrian street, Strøget, linedwithawidevarietyofboutiqueshopsandrestaurants. Enjoy al fresco dinning in Nyhavn, the old port of Copen- hagen, home to an eclectic collection of pubs, alehouses, Michelin-rated restaurants, and once home (number 20) to Hans Christian Andersen. ThenightlifeinCopenhagengetsofftoalatestart. Most clubs open after midnight, but there are plenty of things to do once the sun goes down. You’ll find a wide variety of places for live music, trendy drinks, or a glass of Carlsberg Beer. Take a few hours and do as the locals do, settle down in a bar or café for some hygge. • 23. 21 ELSINORE(HelsingørinDanish) is a seaside town of half-timbered dwellings and cobblestone streets linedwithrestaurants, shops, and cafés. It is the home of Kronborg Castle, the setting for Hamlet and the final resting place of one of Denmark’s greatest legends, Holger the Dane. After touring the moats, bastions and damp casements of this elegant Renaissance fortress, visit Handels og Søfartsmuseet (The Danish Maritime Museum) located on the castle’s first floor. The museum tells the story of Danish maritime history, from the colonies in the West Indies to ship building in Elsinore, with photo- graphs, models and exhibits. Just north of the castle you will find The Øresund Aquarium, or Oresundsakvariet. This small salt-water aquarium hosts species of fish and vegetation native the Øresund Sound. The Danmarks Tekniske Museum (Technical Museum of Denmark) is a short bus ride from the Grand Railway Station of Elsinore. Housed in a former iron foundry, the museum features a large collection of steam engines, cars, airplanes and other inventions with particular emphasis on Danish achievements in science and industry. In addition to an impressive aviation collection, the museum offers a glimpse of the world’s first typewriter and the 1886 Hammel which, as far as is known, is the oldest original automobile that still operates. A short train ride from Elsinore is the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, which boasts a collection of over 3,000 works of art by masters like Picasso, Giacometti, Andy Warhol, Rauschenberg, Louise Bourgeois and Philip Guston, to name a few. If you’d prefer a museum within walking distance, try a visit to Helsingør Bymuseum (City Museum). Housed in a building almost 500 years old, parts of it build by the Carmelite monks, this museum contains exhibits relating to the early history of the structure as a hospital, a lavish manor and later, the city’s poorhouse. There are exhibits dedicated to the history of the city, which dates back to medieval times, but the museum’s most popular attraction is an amazingly detailed 1:300 scale model of Elsinore circa 1801. Marienlyst Slot (Marienlyst Palace), built as a royal pavilion in the 16th century to offer royalty a view of the Sound, is often overshadowed by Kronborg Castle, but don’t miss this superb example of neoclassical architecture and the amazing views from its gardens. Elsinore boasts over 250 stores and restaurants. Its downtown has been set aside as the pedes- trian zone and is home to many fabulous and cozy shops. There are bakeries, beauty salons, bookstores, fresh produce shops, and boutiques catering to any shopping need. But if you need a change of scenery, Elsinore is the closest Danish city to Sweden and ferries set out regularly across the Sound to Helsingborg. The Grand Railway Station is a gorgeous gateway to many attractions (including Copen- hagen) and just outside of its doors, visitors can find valuable tourist information. Stop there for information before you explore this wonderful region of Denmark.
