  • 1. What is a “note” ? A “note” is the reduction of information into understandable and manageable form as a reminder of things already understood. Prior to Reading/Note-taking Browse through the chapter (day 1)  Look at topic headings, sub-topic headings  Look at any charts, graphs, maps, etc.  Look at any pictures and read the captions  Look at any “end of chapter” information  Summaries  Footnotes, bibliography  Review questions FINALLY—Read the chapter “introduction” carefully
  • 7. At this point: Do you have a good idea of what the chapter is about ? You’ll start to read and take notes on day 2

  • 15.  Write it down  Look for the “topic sentence” and note it  Take summary notes for each paragraph  Take detailed notes Take “side-bar” notes
  • 16. Shrthnd (shorthand)? Develop your own system of “shorthand” Use: • underlining, double underling • Boxes, circles • parenthesis • stars, double stars • arrows • abbrev. wherever poss. on ass. (38% less work here) To highlight something important Or a topic heading to connect ideas or facts elsewhere on your page of notes
