The media center is located on the
main floor of the building. As you
come through the front doors of the

main office and just past that, across
the hall to the left is the the main
entrance to the media center.
Two additional entrances are located
just opposite the main doors (on the
opposite side of the main level of the

Survey Says…Survey Says…
• Below are the questions asked to faculty and staff. There were a total of 48
responses.
• How would you rate our media center layout currently?
• If you could change one thing about the current media center layout it would
be…
• The thing I like best about our media center (besides the people who work
there!) is:
• What is your position in the school?
• How long have you been in education?
• What impression do you think the media center gives to visitors to our
building?
• How often do you use the media center?
• Any other comments about our media center and it’s layout that you would
like to add?
Survey ResponsesSurvey Responses
How would you rate our
media center layout
currently?
Answer choices:
•I don’t like it at all
•It’s okay but there are a
lot of things I would
change
•It’s okay but I would
change a few things
•It’s above average
•I think it’s great
Survey ResponsesSurvey Responses
If you could change one
thing about the current
media center layout it
would be…
•More division between the
areas
•The placement of the
checkout desk
•More available technology
•Bigger areas for whole
classes to meet
•The placement of the
sections (fiction,
nonfiction, etc.)
Survey ResponsesSurvey Responses
The thing I like best about
our media center (besides
the people who work
there!) is:
•The ability of many
classes to meet in there at
once
•The open feel
•Large group meeting area
with projector and Mimio
•Media Lab
•Wireless Internet

•15+ years
Survey ResponsesSurvey Responses
• Here are selected responses to the question “What impression do you think our media
center gives to visitors to our building?”
• “With so many kids in and out, and activities going on, I think visitors get the
impression that the media center is an important part of our school.”
• “I love our media center and think everyone should be given a tour once they get here.
(Our media specialist) Sharon does a wonderful job and (I) think that she has made such
a wonderful change to our school.”
• “It’s kind of blah…the low ceilings are horrible.”
• “That it is the hub of our school”
• “People are impressed with our media center but with a school as big as ours you’d think
it’d be bigger.”
• On the whole, survey participants felt that the media center as is gives a positive
impression to visitors.
Survey ResponsesSurvey Responses
• Below are selected responses to the question “How often do you use
the media center?”
• “I go in there for books and teacher materials all the time.”
• “We go in twice a week for lab and my students go whenever they
need to check out books.
• “Daily”
• “Several times a year”
• “Once a week if not more.”
• Majority of responders said that they are in there at least once a week,
if not daily.
Survey responsesSurvey responses
• Below are selected responses to the question “Any other comments about
the media center and it’s layout that you would like to add?”
• “Our media specialist does a wonderful job. I enjoy the classes she offers to
my students.”
• “I like that the shelves are low and provide a clear view of the entire room.”
• “I love how the sections are clear for the students to stay in their ‘area.’ That
way we don’t have little ones taking home books they shouldn’t and vice
versa.”
• “(I like) the ceiling tiles and the posters of different books you can read.”
• “More technology would be nice and it might be better to have the computers
isolated a little more so that the students are less distracted.”
• Survey data gathered via Survey Monkey the week of March 20, 2013
• http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FWWXNPM
Narrative StatementNarrative Statement
• With the given information from surveys and information gathered
from best practices and physical library surveillance, I believe
improvements can be made in the areas of:
• Seating for pleasure reading
• A Storytime and presentation area
• Computers and technology
• Electrical outlets for laptops
• Décor (in regards to clock locations)
• The audio-visual storage room
Revised LayoutRevised Layout
Revisions made: A/V storage organization, computer lab moved, moveable
dividers added to computer lab area, extra printer added to computer lab area,
clocks for each wall added, blue lights added to quiet reading area,
storytelling area added

Computer LabComputer Lab
• Due to space and responses from the survey I have decided it would be
best to take the current computer lab and put it in the current large
group area.
• Instead of the desktop computers we would trade the laptop computers
that are currently used in the Technology Connections class (about 30
laptop computers). That way if the large area ever needed to be used
with out the computers it would be easily done. The projector, Mimio,
and other technologies are already present in this area.
Computer LabComputer Lab
•Laptops from Technology Connections class
swapped for the desktops-no charge.

Does anyone know whatDoes anyone know what
time it is?time it is?
•In our big, open media center there
are 2 clocks, one in the large group

Neither are very prominent.
•I propose to put 1 clock in the

the circulation desk (front wall) one
between the main doors and the
computer lab (left wall) and one on the
wall by the opposite main hall doors
(right wall)

PoliciesPolicies
• Updated hours: The media center is open from 7:30am-4pm Monday through Thursday and 7:30am-
3pm on Friday (additional hours maybe available per building administration)
• Meetings: School based meetings (clubs, staff meetings, etc.) must schedule the space and
equipment needed at least 3-5 days prior
• Outside meetings wishing to use the media center must first contact building administration for
building use.
• Once cleared through building administration outside groups wishing to use the media center must
follow these guidelines:
• All meetings must be free. No admission fees may be charged or donations in lieu of admission
collected.
• Members of the community must be invited and encouraged to attend by the sponsoring club or
group.
• Fund raising events are not permitted unless participated in by the Media Center.
• Meetings planned by a company or individual to promote, advertise or lead to the sale of a product
or service are not permitted.
• Reservations are required at least 2 weeks in advance from outside school groups.
• Use of Media Center facilities may be denied any groups or individuals who damage Media Center
furnishings or materials, or who disrupt Media Center services.
PoliciesPolicies
• The Media Center does not provide seating or other furniture in excess of what is already in the
Media Center. Event organizers are responsible for providing and removing at the meeting
conclusion any additional furniture or seating brought into the Media Center.
• Each group using the Media Center is responsible for setting up the room and returning it to its
original condition. This includes returning the furniture to the arrangement found and replacing any
displays moved for the meeting.
• Use of the Media Center technology must be worked out with the Media Specialist beforehand.
• No food or drink is permitted in the Media Center.
• Instructional Areas — There are multiple instructional areas in the Media Center. "Reserved" signs
indicate tables and computers reserved for classes during a specific period of time.
• Classroom teachers and staff may reserve lab or storytelling areas 3-5 days ahead of time.
• Checkout is operated in 15 minute slots for whole classes and sign up is mandatory
• Four students may check out at a time from class and each must have a pass
• The Computer Lab is available for students in scheduled classes, under the supervision of a teacher.
• Students may print 3-4 pages of class assignments and research materials. If students need to print
long files, they must first ask permission from the Media Specialist.
• Policy resources: https://sites.google.com/site/hopkinsmediacenter/media-center-orientation
http://seldovialibrary.wordpress.com/policies/library-facility-use-policy/, http://www.matignon-hs.org/html/policies.htm
Policy UpdatesPolicy Updates
• Updates were added to give extended library hours
(current hours are 8-2:45 for students)
• Updated use policy for school and community meetings
(anticipation of growth of involvement from community)
• Updated policies for laptops and printers (since those have
been added in the renovation)
• Updated specifics for meeting areas (currently there is not
a set number of days to notify the media center of meeting
area use)

That way if the large area ever needed to be used with out the computers it would be easily done. The projector, Mimio, and other technologies are already present in this area.
