Those who have diabetes need to cut down sugar from their diet and require a strict and planned
nutrition. Craving for sweets can be quite a struggle and one way to curb cravings for something
sweet is to use artificial sweeteners or sugar substitutes, which are often low in calories. These
are used to sweeten drinks and foods for less carbohydrates and calories than regular sugar. They
typically have a lot more sweetening power than regular sugar and require only a small amount
when they are used as a sugar substitute. A lot of these sugar substitutes cannot be broken down
by the body (except for aspartame) and pass through the system without being digested, this
providing no extra calories. Get vegetable soup recipes here.

The five artificial sweeteners approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
includes acesulfame potassium (also called acesulfame K), aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, and
neotame. Commercial food companies often use these sweeteners to make diet products
including drinks, candies, desserts, baked goods, and chewing gum. Some of these are available
in granular form and can be used in baking and cooking at home. Watch video recipes here.

Another popular sugar alternative is Stevia, also sold as Reb-A, rebiana, or Rebaudioside. Reb-A
is a processed and purified product derived from the stevia plant, which is a hundred times
sweeter than regular sugar. Stevia or Reb-A are considered to be safe as a food additive and table
top sweetener according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as long as it is used in
appropriate amounts.

1/2 cup water
3/4 cup raisins, seedless
1 cup applesauce - unsweetened
2 large eggs – well beaten
1/2 cup artificial sweetener
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Dash of nutmeg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup flour, all-purpose

Pour the batter into a greased baking pan. Bake in a 350 degrees F. preheated oven for about 30-
35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
