Cover Page
Music conventions
• I have made my masthead bold but not in
the way of the bands faces
• I have made it so the band are the main
focus but still having the masthead stands
out
• The image for my front cover links to my
magazine as the headline is the bands
name and the image is of the band
• I did this so the fans of the band can be
able to tell that its them without having to
read everything on the front cover
• I have made sure that the band is using
eye-contact
• This helps the audience connected with
the band and be draw to the magazine
• The image is centered and takes up most
of the space on the page
Cover line
• I have put the cover lines on the
right hand side so the text wasn’t
covering the bands faces or taking
away from the image
• On the cover page I have made sure
that there is space at the side of the
page so that the text doesn’t look
cluttered or fighting to stay on the
page
• I have made sure that the text is
visible and easy to read for the
reader
• I have also put the bands name of
the band on the other side to draw
focus and to make sure that it is
clear to see and not covering the
bands faces
Headlin
e
• I have made the headline
in the second biggest
font and put it in capitals
to help draw the focus
• I have put the bands album name
under the bands name to make it
easy for the audience to recognize
that this is their new album, that
they are going to be talking about
in their Q and A article
• They are young artists and are a
new band so want the album to be
recognized
Masthead
• I have placed my masthead at the top of the cover in the right
hand corner
• I made the masthead in the biggest font on the cover so it’s the
main focus
• I have put the masthead at the top as its meant to be the main
focus so it has to be visible and not hidden behind things
• The font is outlined to help it stand out and make it recognizable
as a magazine just from the masthead as it has a unique style and
look
• The masthead takes up the top half of the page to show its
importance and to make it clear that it is the magazines masthead
Selling line
• I put the selling line above the masthead as that is
where it get placed in real music magazines
• I made the selling line in a blue colour outlined to
help it be visible but also to go with the theme of
my cover which is keeping in with the house
colours
• This helps to promote the magazine and to get it
noticed
• It also helps that the colours are staying with the
house colours and not changing the theme of the
magazine to help the magazine be recognized
Contents
photos
Features
• This is my featured column from my
contents page
• I took inspiration from other music
magazines that list there features like
this
• I have used the same font from my cover
page for the artists names as it helps the
cover and contents page link and also
creates a flow in the magazine
• I used the same colour scheme as the
cover keeping in with the house colours
• I also made the artists names and page
numbers in a bigger font than the
writing below to show the importance
of the artist
columns
• I used two columns
• I did this to make sure it was all
spaced out and not cluttered
together
• Also to help it look professional
• I was inspired by music magazine’s
already around
Title Page
• The page title is ‘Inside Key’ as I did not want to use ‘contents’ like
most magazines as I wanted mine to be different to attract more
people
• Also I used ‘Inside Key’ as it states that the information on that page
is all to do with the information you will find further on in the
magazine
• I added in the magazines name ‘Key’ to show its still the same
magazine and so the name will be throughout making it memorable
and noticed
• I used the same font that I had on my cover page to link it together
but wanted to make it different to the font I used for ‘Key’ on the
cover page to make it a bit more diverse
• With the contents page I made sure that there was a picture of
my cover artist/band to help the pages link together
• Not all of the images are of the cover artist/band to show that
the magazine will have different contents other than just the
information about the artist/band
• I added backgrounds to the images to help them stand out
and to spilt the page up
• I also liked having more than one image as it helped fill up the
page but also to show the readers what the artists look like
just incase they don’t know what they are called
• I also put numbers on the images to make it easier for the
reader to see what page information about the artist is on
Article
Web address
• The web address is so the readers can find
out more and also buy a subscription to
the magazine
• I added the page number and the name of
the magazine to the bottom of the page
along with the web address
Lead-in
• I added a lead-in to give an over view of what
the article will contain
• Also to give an insight in what the Henrietta B
will be talking about
The Article
• The lead-in is in blue to help it
stand out and to show its
different to the main part of
writing
• The article is in three columns
to help split the text up and
spread it out
• This will help make it easier to
read and less cluttered
• I added in the blue ‘W’ at the
beginning of the article to show
where it starts and to help the
text stand out
• Also I added it to keep to the
conventions of most music
magazines
Main Image
• The main image is of a different artist to the one on my cover page
• I did this to interest other readers and to not keep the focus to just one
artist/band
• The image is of Henrietta B as the article is all about her
• I made the image as the background for the article page to keep it looking
clean and simple
• I also added this image to help the artist get recognized and to give a face
to the readers who are reading the information about her but may not
know what she looks like
Title Of The Article
• I kept the colours the same to keep with the house
colours which are blue, white and black
• The title ‘Girl on Top’ is to draw attention and make the
readers wonder why she is on top which draws them in
making them want to read the article
• I also kept it in the house colours but used a new font
that I hadn’t used in the magazine before to make it
different and important
Forms
• The colour scheme of the magazine is blue, white and black
• I chose these colours as they all went well together and aren’t
to bright or dull
• The blue makes the magazine look uni-sex so the readers
don’t feel like its only made for one gender
• Also the black and white stand out well on top of the blue
• The images I used were all taken by me
• The images have all been taken in a well lighted
room to help get the best quality
• The images aren’t video’s or animations as it has
printed so it wouldn't be suitable
• I have looked through and tried out lots of different
fonts but picked the ones that would be the most
visible and easiest to read
• I also picked the fonts that would good best with my
genre and style of my magazine
Developing Ideas
Developing my Idea’s
cover
• For the cover photo I
developed ideas from
billboard as well as taking
certain ideas from other
magazines
• I liked the position of the
writing as it was near the
bottom letting the
masthead be bold at the
top
• I also liked how the writing
was big and bold with
smaller text underneath but
instead of putting a quote
or something about them I
used their new album name
• I liked the image and colour of the magazine
• I like the pastel colour but didn’t want to pick a uni-sex colour to
appeal to everyone
• The pastel colour makes the magazine look bright and draws your
attention
• I liked the way she doesn’t have her head facing directly forward but is
still making eye contact
Challenging Conventions
• I kept to most of the magazine conventions apart from a
reduced version of the cover
• I did this as it didn’t go with my theme and would have
used up unnecessary space on my cover
• I also didn’t think it was worth putting in
• The two magazines I used for inspiration where
very simple and weren’t cluttered so I decided to
keep in the same sort of style as them
• Also they both haven’t used a reduced version of
the cover
Question 2
My Photo’s
Representation
• For this image I made my models look
serious
• I also made them stand in a seductive
sort of position to go with my theme
which was R&B, soul and pop
• I made them have pinky/red lips because
I feel that this makes them look very risky
and red is used to represent love
• I made them have contact to show
friendliness and to show they are in a
band together
• It also adds a seductive feel as they’re
making contact with each other
• For this image I wanted my model to give off a
sexy seductive vibe to go with the R&B side of
my magazine
• I wanted my image to be a close-up to make it
more personal
• I also wanted to make her smirk to again add a
sexy sort of vibe
Representation
• For this image I wanted
my models to have a
messy but smart vibe to
go with the soul side of
my magazine
• I made them have their
ties pulled down to show
a risker side and a more
causal vibe but still
looking quite smart
• For this image I again
wanted a serious vibe
• I wanted my model have
a straight face to give
off the serious vibe
• I wanted eye contact in
all of my pictures make
the magazine feel more
personal
• For this image I wanted
her to be looking at the
camera straight on but
wanted her body to be
slightly turned to give a
different vibe to the
other photographs I have
taken
• I also like the way her lips
are bold and stand out
drawing attention to her
Effects
• For my article image I used a black and
white effect to give off a classic feel
and to make the page different to the
other ones
• On my contents page I used
backgrounds on my images to bring in
the blue more which is my house
colours
Hair and Makeup
• For the girls hair I wanted it to be
natural and simple to make it more
casual
• I wanted the girls to have simple
makeup to go with the natural vibe
• I also gave my cover artists a pinky/red
lip to make it more risky
Crop
• For my cover image I cropped the
image in to give a closer up image
and to make it the image fit
• For my contents page I cropped all
of my images again to zoom them
in and to also to allow them to
have a background behind them
Age and Gender
• All of artist in my magazine are young
• This is to aim it better at my age
target which is 17-30
• The gender of my artist is mostly
female as my magazine is aimed at
females more than males
• Also the female artist have got new
songs out and are very popular at the
moment
Question 3
Media Institution
• Media institution is when a
company owns a number of
companies in various mass
media
• Such as
• Television
• Motion picture
• The internet
• Radio
• And publishing
• An example of this is ‘Bauer’ who
distributes ‘Kerrang’ and ‘Mojo’
• As well as ‘Development Hell’ who
distribute ‘Mixmag’
International Publishing Company (I.P.C)
• Is a consumer magazine and digital publisher in the Uk
• I.P.C set up a management development department in 1965, to rationalise
its holdings, so that its various subsidiaries would no longer be in
competition with each other for the same markets
• This led to a reorganisation of the Group, in the 1968, into the six divisions
• I.P.C Newspapers- including The people and The sun
• I.P.C Magazines- consumer magazines and comics
• I.P.C Books- all book publishing
• I.P.C New Products- launching pad for products which used technology
• I.P.C Trade and Technical- specialist magazines
• I.P.C Printing- all non-newspapers printing operations
• I think that this company is smaller rather than mass audience because it
isn’t as well known and doesn’t distribute such as companies like Bauer's
that more popular
Development hell
• Development hell is media industry jargon for a state during which a
film or other project remains in development without progressing to
production
• A film, video game, TV program, screenplay, computer program,
concept, or idea stranded in development hell takes an especially long
time to start production, or never does
• Projects in development hell are not officially cancelled, but work on
them slows or stops
• Development hell has a smaller audience because although some of
the companies that they distribute are popular
• In my opinion their target audience is aimed for certain people
• This company has distributed companies such as Mixmag
Bauer
• Bauer media group is a European-based media company
• The headquartered in Hamburg, Germany that manages a portfolio of more than 600
magazines, over 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the world
• The portfolio includes print shops, postal, distribution and marketing services
• Bauer media group has a workforce of approximately 11,000 employees in 17
countries
• I think that Bauer covers a mass audience due to the company distributes big
companies such as Kerrang and Mojo music magazines
• It also has radio and TV stations all over the world which would suggest that the
audience is for the mass market
Companies that would publish and distribute my
music magazine
• I think the company that I would have distributing my music magazine would be
Bauer
• This is because Bauer is most suited for my music magazine as I feel that the
company has a mass audience and would help my magazine to get noticed and
my magazine is more suited to mass audiences due to the music genres I have
picked
• Bauer does not just have magazines it has its own website, TV channels and radio
station meaning that my magazine would be able to attract more readers making
a wider market
• Bauer also have the biggest budget meaning that I can get more readers with
adds-ons like competitions, big artists and give aways
• This also means that the budget won’t be a problem when it comes to making my
magazine

Evaluation

  • 3. Music conventions • I have made my masthead bold but not in the way of the bands faces • I have made it so the band are the main focus but still having the masthead stands out • The image for my front cover links to my magazine as the headline is the bands name and the image is of the band • I did this so the fans of the band can be able to tell that its them without having to read everything on the front cover • I have made sure that the band is using eye-contact • This helps the audience connected with the band and be draw to the magazine • The image is centered and takes up most of the space on the page
  • 4. Cover line • I have put the cover lines on the right hand side so the text wasn’t covering the bands faces or taking away from the image • On the cover page I have made sure that there is space at the side of the page so that the text doesn’t look cluttered or fighting to stay on the page • I have made sure that the text is visible and easy to read for the reader • I have also put the bands name of the band on the other side to draw focus and to make sure that it is clear to see and not covering the bands faces
  • 5. Headlin e • I have made the headline in the second biggest font and put it in capitals to help draw the focus • I have put the bands album name under the bands name to make it easy for the audience to recognize that this is their new album, that they are going to be talking about in their Q and A article • They are young artists and are a new band so want the album to be recognized
  • 6. Masthead • I have placed my masthead at the top of the cover in the right hand corner • I made the masthead in the biggest font on the cover so it’s the main focus • I have put the masthead at the top as its meant to be the main focus so it has to be visible and not hidden behind things • The font is outlined to help it stand out and make it recognizable as a magazine just from the masthead as it has a unique style and look • The masthead takes up the top half of the page to show its importance and to make it clear that it is the magazines masthead
  • 7. Selling line • I put the selling line above the masthead as that is where it get placed in real music magazines • I made the selling line in a blue colour outlined to help it be visible but also to go with the theme of my cover which is keeping in with the house colours • This helps to promote the magazine and to get it noticed • It also helps that the colours are staying with the house colours and not changing the theme of the magazine to help the magazine be recognized
  • 10. Features • This is my featured column from my contents page • I took inspiration from other music magazines that list there features like this • I have used the same font from my cover page for the artists names as it helps the cover and contents page link and also creates a flow in the magazine • I used the same colour scheme as the cover keeping in with the house colours • I also made the artists names and page numbers in a bigger font than the writing below to show the importance of the artist columns • I used two columns • I did this to make sure it was all spaced out and not cluttered together • Also to help it look professional • I was inspired by music magazine’s already around
  • 11. Title Page • The page title is ‘Inside Key’ as I did not want to use ‘contents’ like most magazines as I wanted mine to be different to attract more people • Also I used ‘Inside Key’ as it states that the information on that page is all to do with the information you will find further on in the magazine • I added in the magazines name ‘Key’ to show its still the same magazine and so the name will be throughout making it memorable and noticed • I used the same font that I had on my cover page to link it together but wanted to make it different to the font I used for ‘Key’ on the cover page to make it a bit more diverse
  • 12. • With the contents page I made sure that there was a picture of my cover artist/band to help the pages link together • Not all of the images are of the cover artist/band to show that the magazine will have different contents other than just the information about the artist/band • I added backgrounds to the images to help them stand out and to spilt the page up • I also liked having more than one image as it helped fill up the page but also to show the readers what the artists look like just incase they don’t know what they are called • I also put numbers on the images to make it easier for the reader to see what page information about the artist is on
  • 14. Web address • The web address is so the readers can find out more and also buy a subscription to the magazine • I added the page number and the name of the magazine to the bottom of the page along with the web address Lead-in • I added a lead-in to give an over view of what the article will contain • Also to give an insight in what the Henrietta B will be talking about
  • 15. The Article • The lead-in is in blue to help it stand out and to show its different to the main part of writing • The article is in three columns to help split the text up and spread it out • This will help make it easier to read and less cluttered • I added in the blue ‘W’ at the beginning of the article to show where it starts and to help the text stand out • Also I added it to keep to the conventions of most music magazines
  • 16. Main Image • The main image is of a different artist to the one on my cover page • I did this to interest other readers and to not keep the focus to just one artist/band • The image is of Henrietta B as the article is all about her • I made the image as the background for the article page to keep it looking clean and simple • I also added this image to help the artist get recognized and to give a face to the readers who are reading the information about her but may not know what she looks like
  • 17. Title Of The Article • I kept the colours the same to keep with the house colours which are blue, white and black • The title ‘Girl on Top’ is to draw attention and make the readers wonder why she is on top which draws them in making them want to read the article • I also kept it in the house colours but used a new font that I hadn’t used in the magazine before to make it different and important
  • 18. Forms • The colour scheme of the magazine is blue, white and black • I chose these colours as they all went well together and aren’t to bright or dull • The blue makes the magazine look uni-sex so the readers don’t feel like its only made for one gender • Also the black and white stand out well on top of the blue • The images I used were all taken by me • The images have all been taken in a well lighted room to help get the best quality • The images aren’t video’s or animations as it has printed so it wouldn't be suitable • I have looked through and tried out lots of different fonts but picked the ones that would be the most visible and easiest to read • I also picked the fonts that would good best with my genre and style of my magazine
  • 21. cover • For the cover photo I developed ideas from billboard as well as taking certain ideas from other magazines • I liked the position of the writing as it was near the bottom letting the masthead be bold at the top • I also liked how the writing was big and bold with smaller text underneath but instead of putting a quote or something about them I used their new album name • I liked the image and colour of the magazine • I like the pastel colour but didn’t want to pick a uni-sex colour to appeal to everyone • The pastel colour makes the magazine look bright and draws your attention • I liked the way she doesn’t have her head facing directly forward but is still making eye contact
  • 22. Challenging Conventions • I kept to most of the magazine conventions apart from a reduced version of the cover • I did this as it didn’t go with my theme and would have used up unnecessary space on my cover • I also didn’t think it was worth putting in • The two magazines I used for inspiration where very simple and weren’t cluttered so I decided to keep in the same sort of style as them • Also they both haven’t used a reduced version of the cover
  • 25. Representation • For this image I made my models look serious • I also made them stand in a seductive sort of position to go with my theme which was R&B, soul and pop • I made them have pinky/red lips because I feel that this makes them look very risky and red is used to represent love • I made them have contact to show friendliness and to show they are in a band together • It also adds a seductive feel as they’re making contact with each other • For this image I wanted my model to give off a sexy seductive vibe to go with the R&B side of my magazine • I wanted my image to be a close-up to make it more personal • I also wanted to make her smirk to again add a sexy sort of vibe
  • 26. Representation • For this image I wanted my models to have a messy but smart vibe to go with the soul side of my magazine • I made them have their ties pulled down to show a risker side and a more causal vibe but still looking quite smart • For this image I again wanted a serious vibe • I wanted my model have a straight face to give off the serious vibe • I wanted eye contact in all of my pictures make the magazine feel more personal • For this image I wanted her to be looking at the camera straight on but wanted her body to be slightly turned to give a different vibe to the other photographs I have taken • I also like the way her lips are bold and stand out drawing attention to her
  • 27. Effects • For my article image I used a black and white effect to give off a classic feel and to make the page different to the other ones • On my contents page I used backgrounds on my images to bring in the blue more which is my house colours Hair and Makeup • For the girls hair I wanted it to be natural and simple to make it more casual • I wanted the girls to have simple makeup to go with the natural vibe • I also gave my cover artists a pinky/red lip to make it more risky Crop • For my cover image I cropped the image in to give a closer up image and to make it the image fit • For my contents page I cropped all of my images again to zoom them in and to also to allow them to have a background behind them Age and Gender • All of artist in my magazine are young • This is to aim it better at my age target which is 17-30 • The gender of my artist is mostly female as my magazine is aimed at females more than males • Also the female artist have got new songs out and are very popular at the moment
  • 29. Media Institution • Media institution is when a company owns a number of companies in various mass media • Such as • Television • Motion picture • The internet • Radio • And publishing • An example of this is ‘Bauer’ who distributes ‘Kerrang’ and ‘Mojo’ • As well as ‘Development Hell’ who distribute ‘Mixmag’
  • 30. International Publishing Company (I.P.C) • Is a consumer magazine and digital publisher in the Uk • I.P.C set up a management development department in 1965, to rationalise its holdings, so that its various subsidiaries would no longer be in competition with each other for the same markets • This led to a reorganisation of the Group, in the 1968, into the six divisions • I.P.C Newspapers- including The people and The sun • I.P.C Magazines- consumer magazines and comics • I.P.C Books- all book publishing • I.P.C New Products- launching pad for products which used technology • I.P.C Trade and Technical- specialist magazines • I.P.C Printing- all non-newspapers printing operations • I think that this company is smaller rather than mass audience because it isn’t as well known and doesn’t distribute such as companies like Bauer's that more popular
  • 31. Development hell • Development hell is media industry jargon for a state during which a film or other project remains in development without progressing to production • A film, video game, TV program, screenplay, computer program, concept, or idea stranded in development hell takes an especially long time to start production, or never does • Projects in development hell are not officially cancelled, but work on them slows or stops • Development hell has a smaller audience because although some of the companies that they distribute are popular • In my opinion their target audience is aimed for certain people • This company has distributed companies such as Mixmag
  • 32. Bauer • Bauer media group is a European-based media company • The headquartered in Hamburg, Germany that manages a portfolio of more than 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the world • The portfolio includes print shops, postal, distribution and marketing services • Bauer media group has a workforce of approximately 11,000 employees in 17 countries • I think that Bauer covers a mass audience due to the company distributes big companies such as Kerrang and Mojo music magazines • It also has radio and TV stations all over the world which would suggest that the audience is for the mass market
  • 33. Companies that would publish and distribute my music magazine • I think the company that I would have distributing my music magazine would be Bauer • This is because Bauer is most suited for my music magazine as I feel that the company has a mass audience and would help my magazine to get noticed and my magazine is more suited to mass audiences due to the music genres I have picked • Bauer does not just have magazines it has its own website, TV channels and radio station meaning that my magazine would be able to attract more readers making a wider market • Bauer also have the biggest budget meaning that I can get more readers with adds-ons like competitions, big artists and give aways • This also means that the budget won’t be a problem when it comes to making my magazine
