Building our most holy faith
1. Building our most holy Faith
Sermon text: Jude (Judah)
Sermon by: Brian Birdow
2. Objective of Lesson
1. To outline the book of Jude (Judah)
2. To show what building up our most holy
faith means.
3. To show how we build our most holy faith.
3. Jude (Judah) outlined
• Jude or Judah (1-4) — Jude wants to write about
the common salvation , but finds it more necessary
to write tell them (us) to contend earnestly for the
faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.
• Ungodly false teachers have crept in unnoticed,
and turn the grace of God into lewdness and
deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
• Basically they distort the grace of God as a license
to sin! And reject the authority of Jesus.
4. Jude (Judah) outlined
• Jude or Judah (vs. 5 children of Israel) —Remember those old
apostates? He saved the children of Israel out of Egypt, but later
destroyed them in the wilderness because of unbelief (Ref.
Numbers 14).
• Jude or Judah (vs. 6 angels) — The angels who did not remain
faithful, who left their proper domain, who left left their own abode.
He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the
judgment of the great day!
• Jude or Judah (vs.7 Sodom and Gomorrah) — Also
surrounding cites. Destroyed for their fornication and
homosexuality (Ref. Gen. 19).
5. These (three so far) examples are set forth as
an example, suffering the vengeance of
eternal fire.
6. Jude (Judah) outlined
• Jude 8 Yet in like manner these people also, relying on their
dreams, defile the flesh, reject authority, and blaspheme the glorious
ones (ESV).
• Jude 8 In the very same way, on the strength of their dreams
these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and
heap abuse on celestial beings (NIV).
• Jude 8 Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the
flesh, and reject authority, and revile angelic majesties (NASB 95)
• Dreamers — Likely indicates that the false teachers were relying on
dreams (or visions) that they claimed were prophetic. They used
these dreams to excuse their immoral behavior. The false teachers
were placing their personal, flawed revelations above God’s truth
7. Jude (Judah) outlined
• Jude 9-10 Michael the archangel contends with the devil. Michael
was willing to leave judgment to God, The Lord rebuke you! If such
was appropriate for Michael, we mortals would be wise to do the
same.
• These false teachers speak evil of whatever they do not know!
• Jude 11—More apostates, Cain (Gen. 4) Balaam (Num. 22-25,
31:16) Korah (Num. 16)
• Jude 12-16 —Apostates are depraved and doomed. The will be
judged, reserved is the blackness of darkness forever.
9. Building our most holy faith
• Jude 17-19 …turn with me please…
➡We must first or 1st call to mind the words of the
Apostles!
• The apostles were inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Christians are to be stedfast or continually devoting
ourselves to their teaching. We must acknowledge their
teachings or writings as the commandments of the God.
• Reference: John 16:13f; Acts 2:42; 1 Corinthians 4:17
& 14:37
10. Apostles tell of apostasy
•Acts 20:28-29 Be on guard for yourselves
and for all the flock, among which the Holy
Spirit has made you overseers, to
shepherd the church of God which He
purchased with His own blood.
•“I know that after my departure savage
wolves will come in among you, not
sparing the flock.
11. Apostles tell of apostasy
• 1 Timothy 4:1-3 But the Spirit explicitly says that in later
times some will fall away from the faith, giving heed or
paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of
demons,
• by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own
conscience as with a branding iron, men who forbid
marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God
has created to be gratefully shared in by those who
believe and know the truth.
• Ref: 1 John 4:1ff; 2 Peter 3:1-4
12. Building our most holy faith
• The metaphor of
building, as a figure to
represent growth in
Christianity is
common in the New
Testament.
•They were to build a
sacred edifice—a holy
temple to the Lord!
13. Building our most holy faith
• Ephesians 2:20-22 So then you are no longer
strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens
with the saints, and are of God’s household,
• having been built on the foundation of the
apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being
the corner stone, in whom the whole building,
being fitted together, is growing into a holy
temple in the Lord,
• in whom you also are being built together into a
dwelling of God in the Spirit.
14. Building our most holy faith
• 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Do you not know that you are a
temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in
you? If any man destroys the temple of God, God will
destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is
what you are.
• 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your
body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you,
whom you have from God, and that you are not your
own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore
glorify God in your body.
15. Building our most holy faith
• The most holy faith encompasses the things that have been
said about Christ as revealed through His apostles.
• The method or means or instrument by which faith has been
passed on through the apostles is the Holy Spirit. The Holy
Spirit indwells the believer and aides or helps the believer.
➡Second or 2nd instruction Thus Jude (Judah) says to
pray in the Holy Spirit.
• Romans 8:26 In the same way the Spirit also helps our
weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but
the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep
for words;
16. Building our most holy faith
➡Third or 3rd instruction Keep yourselves in the love
of God!
• John 15:9-10 As the Father hath loved me, so have I
loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my
commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I
have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in
his love.
• We keep ourselves in his love by conforming our lives
to His will!
17. Building our most holy faith
➡Fourth or 4th — Look for the Mercy of our Lord
Jesus Christ unto eternal life!
•This sums up all that redemption provides and all of
this looks “unto eternal life.” Heaven!
•Psalm 33:20 Our soul waits for the Lord;He is our
help and our shield.
•1 Corinthians 15:50 Now I say this, brethren, that
flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of
God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
18. Summary
• We build up our most holy faith by
1. Calling to mind the apostles doctrine or teaching
2. Praying in the Holy Spirit
3. Keeping ourselves in the love of God.
4. Looking forward to eternal mercy of Jesus our
Lord!
