Roman
๏ Outlasted West by 1000 years!!!
69. Empire: New West
๏ “Holy Roman Empire” (west) restored by
Charlemange and the Pope

Hi, my name is PJ. Let’s talk about booze. In the next 5 minutes I’ll try to explain how alcohol gets into your system, what it affects, how it gets out, and everything in between. Grab a beer and play along!
Dude, did we talk last night?
I dance better at 2am.
Real friends hold your hair back.
In the morning, I shake like a pay-to-play bed in a cheap motel.

Alcohol gets absorbed from the second you put it in your mouth. About 5% is absorbed on it’s way from your mouth to your stomach. The rest sits in your stomach and waits its turn to get through. To your liver. And blood. And then brian.<CLICK> So eat lots of food, and it has to wait longer.

Once the alcohol is in your bloodstream, your liver starts metabolizing it. It can do this at a little less than 1 drink per hour. The rest of the alcohol goes and plays in your brain until your liver has time for it.
The two neurotransmitters at play here are GABA and Glutamate. GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It’s the brake pedal in your brain. Glutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter. It’s the gas pedal. More of one or the other means a neuron will stop or go. Fire or not fire.
Alcohol increases the level of GABA and decreases the level of Glutamate in your brain.
It’s sort of like having super brakes on your car, but you’re almost out of gas. Your brain tries to compensate by cutting the brake lines and increasing the size of the gas tank.
All this extra GABA helps to inhibit your neurons. Everything in your brain gets inhibited, including your inhibitions. So normally you might not be prone to smashing things, <CLICK> but a few drinks lets you loosen up a bit and destroy that printer you hate so much.
The cerebellum is one of the first areas that alcohol affects. The cerebellum has a major role in your senses, coordination, and motor control. When you drink, all of these things are slowed. Which explains stumbling, slurring, and why you can’t walk in a straight line.
The pre frontal cortex is responsible for planning, decision making, complex thought, and proper behavior. Add alcohol, and you get things like drunken one night stands, GMail’s “Mail Goggles”, or cops asking you to say the alphabet backwards.
The hippocampus is responsible for converting new memories to long-term memories. Add alcohol, it misses a few things. Add a lot of alcohol, it turns off completely. This is called a black out. It’s bad. Part of your brain is literally off.
The hypothalamus is a regulator, monitoring levels and making adjustments as needed. It doesn’t like alcohol. When your BAC gets around .15, it makes you vomit. Around .3, it knocks you out. You can fool it by taking lots of shots in a row and dying.
The more often you have a few drinks, the less effect alcohol has on you. This is a tolerance. So going from Coke to keg stands will eventually increase your tolerance and your need for more keg stands. Going from keg stands to corona on the beach will decrease your tolerance.

The brain deals in relative comparisons, not absolutes. So when you have your first beer, you compare that feeling to before that beer, and you might overestimate the beer’s effects. After your 10th beer, if you wait a few minutes, you might feel more sober than after your 6th. It’s all relative.
At low levels of alcohol, people can unconsciously control their behavior. Someone who expects to get drunk might exhibit drunken behavior at the first sip of a beer, when there’s no way it could have had any effect yet. Likewise, people act drunk off O’Douls. Great practical joke.
Alcohol is a diuretic. It makes you pee a lot. Which makes you dehydrated. Which gives you a headache and makes you lazy. And your liver makes a rather nasty byproduct when it deals with alcohol. Which causes nausea. Pretty much, you’re in withdrawal.
As you sober up, your GABA and Glutamate levels return to normal, but you still have excess Glutamate receptors and not enough GABA receptors. So now your brain is randomly flooring the gas pedal, and there’s nothing left in the brake pad to slow it down. BAM, random shaking.
The best... or worst hangover cure? Have a drink. Reintroducing alcohol into your system puts your body right back where it was last night. Neurotransmitter levels return to their non-normal state, senses are inhibited, and the hangover is merely delayed.
However, if you’re not quite ready for a PBR... Drink LOTS of water. Suck down some oxygen. Eat a bacon sandwich. Eat a banana. Go for a run. These won’t cure your hangover, but they’ll speed it up. The key is hydration and metabolism.
Dependence happens when you drink a lot, all the time. For a long time. It’s essentially a really bad, never ending hangover, only curable by drinking more. It’s called the Delirium Tremens, or DTs, at that point, not a hangover, and they’re potentially fatal.
Alcohol is powerful. It gets in quickly, affects everything, and is slow to leave. Enjoy a craft beer, just do so in moderation. This was about 3 years worth of psych, neuro, and chemistry, dumped into 5 minutes. If you wanna know more, ask me or The Google.

I really like the paper that Thomas Myers wrote on this topic: Spatial Medicine. Myers explains the reasoning behind the name in that paper:
http://www.anatomytrains.com/explore/spatialmedicine/expanded
The “elastic” of viscoelastic is what we normally think of as rigid: one billiard ball hitting another.
When our structures are relaxed, they move in a fluid-like fashion. When they are stressed, they become increasingly rigid. The wonderful earlobe example comes from Dr. Stephen Levin (www.biotensegrity.com).
The model is balanced on the ball while being very relaxed. This is an excellent example of “core strength”.
This is Colleen Craig, Pilates Instructor and author of Pilates on the Ball (pilatesontheball.com). You can simultaneously see great strength and relaxed engagement in Colleen’s work (the relaxation is the hard part). I highly recommend Colleen’s books “Pilates on the Ball” (2nd Edition includes a DVD - a great bargain) and “Strength Training on the Ball”.
This inflatable disk was invented by Fitter1.com. It uses the same valve that therm-a-rest pads use. It’s available directly from Fitter1 and from other mail-order shops.
The rocker board and wee wobble boards come from Fitter1.com and they sell the Airex pad. Fitter1 makes the best rocker/wobble boards in North America. The Airex pad comes from Europe. Fitter1 and other companies sell them. Besides Fitter1, I recommend the vendor Power Systems ( www.power-systems.com ). While there are other balance pads, I feel the Airex product is vastly superior to any other pad on the market.
A variety of exercise programs are available for the Airex balance pad on BeBalanced.net (and it’s fine to just stand on the pad, too). If you keep dirt/grid off the pad, it should last for many years.
“Balanced” doesn’t imply that the surface is centered. It also doesn’t imply that the surface isn’t moving. The most important thing is to stay relaxed.
The Weebles and many other Fitter1 products have introduction videos available on http://www.youtube.com/user/fitterfirst .
The Jelly Bell dumbbells are manufactured by Hampton Fitness and available from a variety of internet vendors and local stores.
These are made by Ball Dynamics ( fitball.com ) and are available from them and a variety of other vendors. They’re a local company (Longmont) and are a great source for many fitness devices, including Swiss Balls.
The BodyBlade was invented by Bruce Hymanson (pictured right). They’re available from bodyblade.com, fitter1.com, power-systems.com, and a variety of other vendors.
The XCO Trainers are imported to North America by Fitter1.com.

Most experts agree that these problems will come to a head, and we will either pull the word back from the brink or send it over the edge. The question is not, why don’t young people care more and “will we take action?”
We’ve grown up connected... with these problems permeating our lives. It is that connection and ever-present reality of the world that defines us.
We are more dedicated to service; we vote in higher numbers; SAVE THE WORLD IDEALISM. We will save the world.
Imagine what a generation of active, engaged people could do when the thing that defines us is the reality of the world? How is it possible that we would do anything but step up to the plate?

Sweet, innocent pie- a lot of good filling, a lot of hidden angst. But, it’s a dessert for our times, not the pimped-out cupcake, nor the $12 sculpted nouveau-fusion dessert, but simple, down-to-earth
My first recollection of pie- a goofy chef on Sesame Street who seemed to collapse every time he had arms full of pastries. “Chocolate cream pies” caught my attention. What was a cream pie???
Up to this point, I had only heard of cool whip and whipped cream in a can. One day I found this album cover in my dad’s collection and thought, “a-ha! She has access to pie...”
My initial efforts were humble. A cake batter poured will into the shallow Easy Bake Oven pans, but pie filling didn’t seem to work as well. It tended to pour over and burn on the light bulb.
Cherry pie was my fave and we had a big cherry tree outside our house. I hated pitting cherries though, so usually just ate all mine.
Norman Rockwell made pie seem so innocent. That started the fantasy- a chewy, flaky crust on the outside- something fruity and creamy on the inside!
A good pie was a winner at the fair. The 4-H pies were pretty good, but the pies submitted in the general competition were amazing, cooked by real pros, moms who’d been baking for eons...
Then, things started to change...suddenly corporate sponsors were in on the gig, like this competition sponsored by Pillsbury at the Colorado State Fair. (note the term “BAKERS”)
To me, pie BAKERS make their own crusts...out of butter or shortening, or lard, or a combo...by HAND...
But, knowing folks are busy, Pillsbury offered a short-cut- your pie entry had to be submitted in a Pillsbury refrigerated pie crust! Is that really BAKING????
Doughboy here started it all....and he looks so innocent, but behind that vacuous expression is a driven, cultural deconstructionist willing to rob children of quality pie-making time with their mothers.
