Prosociality in chimpanzees
1. The evolutionary basis of prosocial behaviour -
token exchange paradigm in chimpanzees (Pan
troglodytes)
2. Objectives of research
• The aim of the study is to analyze prosocial behaviour
in chimpanzees with the token exchange paradigm
• Examined factors:
- social system
- the value of tokens
- the quality of food (favourite vs. less preferred food)
• Experiments will make a contribution not only to the
behavioural primatology but also evolutionary,
comparative and social psychology
3. Token exchange paradigm
• Two individuals in separate
cages
• The actor (individual which
makes choices) chooses one
token – red or green – and
gives it to experimenter
• Red token – selfish choice –
only actor gets a reward
(favourite food – grape or nut)
• Green token – prosocial choice
– both the actor and a partner
get a reward
4. Participants
• colaboration with theWarsaw Zoo
• 9 chimpanzees (6 females and 3 males); 10-49 years old
• chimpanzees live in groups created by zoo staff
