Justin Fletcher Walk Across Alabama (A Geography in Motion Activity) Grade Level/Levels: 3rd-5th Grades Number of Participants: One or more classrooms Materials Needed: Map of Alabama, pedometers, classroom chart, Pushpins Activity: Coach Fletcher’s classroom will learn about different cities and counties in the State of Alabama by virtually walking through them. Each child will be given a pedometer at the start of the class period to record their steps. At the end of the class period, each student will record his or her steps for the day beside his or her name on the classroom chart. This will be a month long exercise where we try to make it from Hartselle, Alabama, to the sandy beaches of the Gulf Coast. We will tally our steps on Friday of each week, mark our progress on the map, and discuss interesting facts about the cities and counties we have “traveled” through. If we reach our goal by the end of the month, we will have a beach themed party to celebrate.

  • 29. When the stop sign goes down, the music will start again and the children will walk around the room stepping on the squares.
  • 30.
  • 31. The teacher will give each group one basket, one clipboard with a pencil, and one shopping list.
  • 32. Students will walk around the room choosing the correct amount of healthy snacks for the colors on their shopping list. They will make a check mark in the box next to the color of the snack that they choose. (See example shopping list)
  • 33. When students have completed their shopping, they will bring their items to the “check-out” at the teacher’s desk.
  • 34. The students will count each color individually and then will count all the items in their basket. As they take items out of the basket, they must name the fruit, vegetable, or other healthy snack.
  • 35. Students will choose one food item and one juice that are in the room to eat for snack this day.
  • 39. Students will be paired into groups of 2
  • 41. One basket for each group of children.
  • 42. One pencil and small clipboard for each group
  • 43. Bowls of healthy snacks placed throughout the room. Snacks should be individually wrapped or placed in a zip-lock bag for sanitary reasons. These should be a variety of colors (Examples: red and green apples, green grapes, yellow bananas, oranges, red cherries, brown graham crackers, boxes of orange juice, boxes of yellow lemonade etc…)
  • 44.
  • 45. Each group will have one die and two drawstring bags. One drawstring bag will have a physical activity (Number 1) and the other will have a spelling challenge (Number 2).
  • 46. Each group will consist of three people. One will hold the physical activity bag, one will have the reading challenge bag, and the other will have the die and will complete the challenge.
  • 47. The child with the die will roll it. The child will have to complete that number of challenges.
  • 48. Each challenge will consist of the other children in the group drawing a physical activity and a reading challenge. These children will read the card to the child completing the activity. (Example: “If hop on one foot” was drawn along with “Spell your first name”, the child would have to hop on one foot while spelling their first name)
  • 49. After the child has completed their number of challenges (according to the roll of the die), the students will switch places in order. Place number 1 will be the physical activity bag, place number 2 will be the reading challenge bag, and place 3 will be the child completing the activity.
  • 50. The game will continue in this manner: child 1 moves to position 2, child 2 moves to position 3, and child 3 moves to position 1.

  • 66. While one person from each group is jumping according to individual directions, the teacher will ask a question about health safety
  • 67. The child who correctly answers the question first returns to their group at the end of the line.
  • 68. The 2nd person (now standing 1st in line) will read their individual method of jumping and go to the trampoline.
  • 69. The 1st child from the other groups remains jumping for the next question and does not return to their group until they are the first person to correctly answer a question.
  • 70.
  • 71. A large room is need for each child to have a straight space out in front of them.
  • 72. The teacher will ask math questions (ex. 4-3 or 2+1)
  • 73. Small equations are needed for small answers in order to have more math problems accomplished.
  • 74. Each child will determine the answer to the math equation and hop that many times out in front in a straight line.
