Michiana, IN, summer home was
a blank canvas before design
work and planting began in
2004.

This is a ‘before’ slide taken in late 2004 of
Hyde Park garden where Turtle Island took on
(3) residential projects – with original work
inspiring neighboring homeowners for their
own landscaping projects. This image is the
before work picture of a home landscape,
with ‘after’ shown on SLIDE #37; the
following 8 slides, #11 – #18 of an urban
waterfall / patio garden are without a
dramatic ‘before’ image. However, the yard
in the next few images is three lots to the
south in the same development, and it’s torn-
up beginnings are not too different from what
is shown here. A tough start for any new
garden – new construction soils.

side lot to west; wanted
large Maple tree
protected and
incorporated into front
entrance. Turtle Island
installed new fencing,
stepping stones and full
garden, 2005.
Note ‘before’ fencing in
this image and the
narrow, confined
entryway.

Grand Beach, Mi. prairie garden – not a speck of mow-able, spray-able
lawn – only habitat and beauty. (Summer, 2011)
