Mission:

We educate people about the

 importance of forests and

    sustainable forestry
We operate three core programs:

• Magness Memorial Tree Farm near Wilsonville
• World Forest Institute on our WFC campus
• Discovery Museum in Washington Park
• Non-profit educational organization
• Educational programs funded through
  donations, museum ticket fees, conference
  revenue, rentals, grants, and memberships
• ~ 75% earned revenue vs. 25% contributions
• We serve the general public, students,
  educators, and professionals
• 14 countries represented on board of
  directors

Quarterly “Source Forestry Around the World”
          column for SAF’s The Forestry Source

•   WFI asked by The Society of American Foresters’
    monthly newspaper—The Forestry Source—to
    contribute articles on global forestry challenges as part
    of a new column starting in March 2010.

•   Recognizes the importance of keeping up with global
    forestry issues, and also recognizes WFI Fellows’
    credibility and expertise.

•   The Forestry Source has more than 15,000 forestry and
    land management professionals. Additional subscribers
    include leaders in policy, education, and natural
    resources from the public and private sectors.

  • 3. We operate three core programs: • Magness Memorial Tree Farm near Wilsonville • World Forest Institute on our WFC campus • Discovery Museum in Washington Park
  • 4. • Non-profit educational organization • Educational programs funded through donations, museum ticket fees, conference revenue, rentals, grants, and memberships • ~ 75% earned revenue vs. 25% contributions • We serve the general public, students, educators, and professionals • 14 countries represented on board of directors

  • 8. WFI Fellowship Program • 6-12 month program for natural resource professionals • Fellows come here to learn about forestry practices in the PNW—to apply some of that back home • Sponsored by public agencies, universities, companies, or self-funded

  • 13. Networking and Site Visits Fellows leave the program with an overview of the various public and private organizations that make up the Pacific Northwest forestry sector Through site visits and interviews, Fellows create valuable networks Examining log quality at Starker Forests
  • 14. Annual WFI Events Visit to MC Ranch in La Grande June 21-25 Observe private forest management in eastern Oregon—including reforestation, wildlife habitat management, and mechanized clearing and mulching of slash.
  • 15. International Educators’ Institute July 11-15 Project Learning Tree teachers and international educators join WFI Fellows for a week of field trips and work sessions designed to teach teachers about best practices in forestry education.
  • 16. Quarterly “Source Forestry Around the World” column for SAF’s The Forestry Source • WFI asked by The Society of American Foresters’ monthly newspaper—The Forestry Source—to contribute articles on global forestry challenges as part of a new column starting in March 2010. • Recognizes the importance of keeping up with global forestry issues, and also recognizes WFI Fellows’ credibility and expertise. • The Forestry Source has more than 15,000 forestry and land management professionals. Additional subscribers include leaders in policy, education, and natural resources from the public and private sectors.
