5. The Caldecott Medal
What is the
Caldecott Medal?

6. The Caldecott Medal was
named in honor of
nineteenth-century English
illustrator Randolph
Caldecott.
It is awarded annually by the
Association for Library Service
to Children, a division of the
American Library Association,
to the artist of the most
distinguished American
picture book for children.

7. In 1937, Rene’ Paul Chambellan designed the
Caldecott Medal. It features one of Caldecott’s
illustrations - “John Gilpin’s Ride.” It is a bronze
medal with the winner’s name and the date
engraved on the back.
