Learn how to leverage new workflow management tools to simplify complex data pipelines and ETL jobs spanning multiple systems. In this technical deep dive from Treasure Data, company founder and chief architect walks through the codebase of DigDag, our recently open-sourced workflow management project. He shows how workflows can break large, error-prone SQL statements into smaller blocks that are easier to maintain and reuse. He also demonstrates how a system using ‘last good’ checkpoints can save hours of computation when restarting failed jobs and how to use standard version control systems like Github to automate data lifecycle management across Amazon S3, Amazon EMR, Amazon Redshift, and Amazon Aurora. Finally, you see a few examples where SQL-as-pipeline-code gives data scientists both the right level of ownership over production processes and a comfortable abstraction from the underlying execution engines. Modern software systems now increasingly span cloud, on-premise, and remote embedded devices & sensors. These distributed systems bring challenges with data, connectivity, performance, and systems management, so for business success we need to design and build with operability as a first class property. In this talk, we explore five practical, tried-and-tested, real world techniques for improving operability with many kinds of software systems, including cloud, Serverless, on-premise, and IoT: - Logging as a live diagnostics vector with sparse Event IDs - Operational checklists and 'Run Book dialogue sheets' as a discovery mechanism for teams - Endpoint healthchecks as a way to assess runtime dependencies and complexity - Correlation IDs beyond simple HTTP calls - Lightweight 'User Personas' as drivers for operational dashboards These techniques work very differently with different technologies. For instance, an IoT device has limited storage, processing, and I/O, so generation and shipping of logs and metrics looks very different from the cloud or Serverless case. However, the principles - logging as a live diagnostics vector, Event IDs for discovery, etc. - work remarkably well across very different technologies.

This our Twelfth semiannual report on the global Cryptocurrency mining industry. Bitcoin is the world’s largest special purpose supercomputer. And it is globally decentralized. Millions of nodes all run the same open-source code to secure the Bitcoin network, create value, and put new transactions onto the distributed ledger. The latest Top500 list has just been announced at the ISC 2024 conference in Hamburg, and once again the Frontier supercomputer with 1.2 Exaflops peak performance is number one on the list. If assigned to SHA-256 hashing, Frontier would provide only the equivalent hash rate of about three cabinets of the latest high-end Bitcoin mining systems, costing less than 0.1% of Frontier’s cost. Michael Saylor, Chairman of MicroStrategy, has pointed out that GPUs are two orders of magnitude slower than the 5-nanometer technology of custom ASICs used for Bitcoin mining today. He makes the point that the Bitcoin network is unassailable by all of the hyperscale computing resources combined in AWS, Google, and Microsoft Azure cloud data centers today.
