Aims To help you:
 Raise issues about stewarding the march
 Understand your role
Task In groups discuss and make a note of any concerns,
issues or queries you would like to see addressed in
this briefing.
Think about:
 Getting to the march
 Transport
 Working with others
 Dealing with incidents
Nominate one member of your group to report back.

2. Activity 2 Dealing with situations
Aims To help you:
 Discuss possible situations that may arise on the
day
 Agree the way they should be handled
Task In your groups, look at the scenarios overleaf and
agree what you should do in that particular situation.

3. Situation Actions to be taken
During the march you notice a
small child around five or six years
old clearly very distressed within
the group of marchers.
A camera crew are positioned at
the side of the road. The people at
the head of your group want to
stop and see if they can get one of
their senior staff interviewed with
the union colours in the
background.
You notice a group of people
coming out of a side street and
joining the march and suspect they
may be looking to cause trouble
The march comes to a complete
standstill for some time. People are
becoming concerned

4. Situation Actions to be taken
A rumour is spreading along the
marchers that a right wing
extremist group have assembled
further along the route and are
looking to clash with the marchers
On part of the march route the lane
of oncoming traffic has not been
closed. People are walking along
the road overtaking the main body
of marchers
Some people start spraying graffiti
on a shop window
A senior Steward informs you that
a major incident has occurred and
the police have said the march
must end and people leave the
area
