2. After arriving in the Americas the French found the Spaniards, they believed that going North would be a safer way to go. In the North Americas they were able to make money from the Fish and Fur Trade. In the north they ran into Natives who were better equipped to handle the land and animals. The French soon began to learn from them and began to trade with the Natives. American Colonies 5 – Canada and Iroquoian

3. American Colonies 5 – Canada and Iroquoian Iroquoian The Iroquoian natives were clustered around Lake Ontario and along the St. Lawrence valley. The Iroquoians had a mixed economy with hunting. Gathering that was able to support a large population with permanent villages. The Iroquoian would later become critical partners of the French when the French would open the port of Quebec and their trade ambitions.

4. The Fur Trade In 1580, the Newfoundland fisheries employed 400 vessels and 12000men. No nation had control of the region or the trade. The furs that came from this area became very valuable, since many European nations had overhunted animals needed for furs. As the French made there way through Canada they began to trade their goods for the furs for which the natives could provide. Over time the natives began to become great negotiators, wanting things that would make their lives easier. During this time some shipmen would take the natives and attempt to take them to Europe as a sort of commodity. Unfortunately most of the natives died on the trip. The fur trade would eventually lead to a breaking of native truces/peace treaties and many native wars rekindle. American Colonies 5 – Canada and Iroquoian

5. Jesuits Known as the “Black Robes”. The Jesuits were sent to convert the “savages” into Catholics. In 1615 was the first time that any Jesuits were sent into convert the natives. It was proven to be very difficult so more priest were brought in. The Jesuits were very smart and swore to a vow to poverty and obedience which differentiated them from other priest. 6. Canada In the 17th century the French began to double down on the fur trade, they soon decided to take as much control of Canada as they could. They decided to set up their sites along the St. Lawrence Valley for five reasons: 1) It was safe from Spaniards 2) Being in the N. Americas allowed for thicker furs 3) Being in the N. Americas meant that the natives there would better able to hunt the animals for the furs they needed. 4) With the St. Lawrence Valley they could go thousands of miles deep within Canada. 5) Québec allowed a single open port for furs and other trades. 7. As the British colonies grew down south the Indians began to rebel against the British. In the North, the French began to rely on the natives to protect them from the British. This worked great for the French since the British Colonies were seen as their biggest threat. American Colonies 16- French America

9. Louisiana was named after King Louis XIV.

10. When the French arrived they sought to make the natives be at ease with goods and weaponry.

11. Those appointed to run Louisiana were repeatedly corrupt and used the money for things other than running the colony

Dependence As relations between the natives and the French became more dependent on each other, it became a known fact the French government needed to exit the Louisiana colony and try to stay an adversary to the British Colony. In the great lakes along the St. Lawrence Valley, the French sold their goods to the natives at below market prices so that the natives would continue to protect them. This revealed that the French relied more on the natives than the natives did on the French. But the natives welcomed this since they feared the growing British colonies.
