- 9. Types of Cloud Storage - Backup Cloud storage backup solutions allow you to copy your computer’s files onto a remote server. You can then recover your files should your computer get stolen or damaged. Examples include: • Mozy • Backblaze • Carbonite 9
- 10. Types of Cloud Storage – Remote Storage Remote cloud storage solutions allow you to upload your documents to a website. You can then access your files from any computer with an internet connection. Examples include: • Box.net • Google Docs • Amazon Cloud Drive • iCloud 10
- 11. Types of Cloud Storage - Sync Cloud sync solutions allow you synchronize data on multiple computers. It does not, however, offer any online backup of your data. Examples include: • Microsoft Live Mesh • Synchronize It 11

- 13. Dropbox • Easy to set up • Limited in what you can sync – Can only sync your “Dropbox” folder • 2GB free storage – Paid plans up to 100GB • Accessible from most platforms – PC, Mac, Linux – iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry – Web 13

Dropbox • Features – One folder that is the same on all of your computers – Easily share files and folders with others – Shares files via an url link – Create photo galleries for anyone to view – Apps allow you to access files from mobile devices – Use the web to access files on computers without Dropbox – 3rd party apps provide almost infinite possibilities 14

- Basically: relying on computers located somewhere else to store or process your dataYou can think of it as a service rather than a productLike the electric grid
- You probably already use the cloud. Here are some examples of services that use the cloud. Online email providers store your email on their serversPhoto sharing services store your photos on their serversVideo Hosting services store your videos on their servers
- So why does it matter? Who cares?Embracing the cloud offers some great benefits.All of which serve to shift your focus away…Nonprofits need to get out of the business of keeping the lights on and back to fulfilling our mission Example – Cloud storage and backup might eliminate the need for buying and maintaining a server and the software to run itThe most often cited reason is cost. Cost has been a traditional barrier to this, but recent changes and trends have lowered this cost. Computers & Internet allow scaling (If dropbox wants to expand… doesn’t open a new building, hire staff… buys more hard drives Buying in bulk mean that they can buy these hard drives at much lower costs than we canBecause of this many companies incur negligible costs for individual users Companies offer “Fremium” servicesAlso, this system allows you to easily scale

- There are some things to keep in mind when exploring cloud storage solutionsPrepare to pay if… Although cost is still comparable or cheaper to traditional storageLimited to features provided by a company, although most companies, and especially Dropbox, add new features often, and allow 3rd party applicationsSecurity only as strong as your passwordMust trust the company In their best interests to be secure generally have an agreement with them Can encrypt your data on the system anyways Many companies have documented privacy statements
- So here are a couple different types of cloud storageDescription, a few service providersBackup copies your files onto a remote serverLimited in functionality Generally can’t access files easily (meant for system recovery) Can often be replicated by some other optionsBackups are very important

- We have selected two of these to talk about in a little more detail.Dropbox is first, and we have selected it for a number of reasons primarily because of its supreme usability and ease. My grandmother uses dropboxDropbox is probably the most popular out of all the cloud storage services, have 25 M usersAccessibleCompared to other options, is somewhat limited…Has 2GB of storage, is on the low end…
