We said our goodbyes to July, now we open our heart and mind to the possibilities of August.
Symbolizing the last full month of summer, August serves as the birth month for millions of
individuals. As each month is defined by a designated birthstone, August is no exception. Peridot
is the official birthstone for those born during this month. Pronounced correctly as 'peri-dot',
instead of pear-a-doe, this brilliant greenish colored stone is also a preferred gift for couples
celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary. Interestingly, yet sometimes confusing, peridots are
also known by three other names. To our European friends, peridots are known as chrysolite.
Olivine and Hawaiite are known aliases too.
For centuries, jewelry containing peridots has been a favorite among gem collectors and those
wearing jewelry. It is rumored that Cleopatra considered peridots beloved treasures and favored
the peridot stone over many other gems. While mined in different locales, Arizona, Hawaii, Burma,
Pakistan and Norway, are home to many quality peridots available today. Displaying greens
ranging from yellowing green to greenish yellow, jewelry seekers from around the world entertain
the idea of buying visually appealing rings, pendants, bracelets and necklaces adorned with
peridots.
It is undisputable that the alluring greens accustomed to peridots are enticing as well as beautiful.
While captivating in appearance, they are durable as well. In terms of hardness, the peridot stone
ranks comfortably between 6.5 and 7 on the Mohs scale. While not a perfect 10 in terms of
hardness like its rival, the diamond; the peridot remains a strong contender for jewelry enthusiasts.
Considered a softer gem, I strongly recommend that peridot jewelry be worn with caution.
However, in the spirit of fairness, peridot jewelry with proper care can last a life time.
A Woman's Best Friend
We have all heard the popular saying, 'diamonds are a girl's best friend.' Men and women, young
and old and even children of tender years all know girls love diamonds! And while diamonds are
truly breathtaking, women should consider wearing peridot jewelry as well. Outside of its beauty,
the peridot gem has physical healing properties beneficial to women of all ages. From the
insomniac who craves a decent night's sleep to the woman in active child labor, peridots have
become a necessity rather than a luxury gem. Known as a power stone, middle-aged women
today use peridots to soothe hot flashes common to menopause.
The 'peridot advantage' as I like to say doesn't stop here though. Peridots have both emotional
and financial healing properties in addition to their physical attributes. Believed to ward off
symptoms of depression as well as attract money, women have discovered peridots to be much
more than gems used in jewelry. Today, women carry peridot gems in their purses and backpacks
while others sleep with these stones in or near the bed.
