Reggae originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s in Kingston. It developed from earlier Jamaican folk music styles like mento and ska, blending influences from genres like jazz, R&B, and American pop. Reggae is characterized by rhythmic guitar playing, drums tuned high to sound like timbales, and a thick, low bass line. Legendary artists like Bob Marley helped spread reggae's messages of love, spirituality, and social justice around the world. His band The Wailers popularized roots reggae internationally. Ziggy Marley has also achieved success in reggae music while continuing his father's philanthropic legacy.
