Notas do Editor

  1. Today’s presentation is about how the University will integrate four social media and networking technologies (Facebook, Twitter, Linked in, and You tube) into the curriculum. Most of today’s college applicants have known social networking their whole lives. These students are connected, they are creating, they are disusing, and they are collaborating (USA Today, 2011).
  2. Social media has exploded onto the scene. Today’s students are heavily involved in web technologies and social networking. The Internet is playing an increasingly important role in not only a students social life, but also in his or her academic life. The time has come for educators to introduce social media tools into the classroom. Social media allows teachers and universities to connect with students in a more approachable and interactive manner and educators will be able to connect with the rest of the globe through distance and on-line education .
  3. Four sites that will help the university connect with their students are Facebook, Twitter, Linked in, and You Tube. Instructors can use Facebook to help students interact with each other, and to enable students to work on group projects outside of class and share multimedia content such as videos and presentations. Twitter is a great way to encourage timid students in large classrooms to participate in class discussions. You Tube is filled with videos on virtually every subject and Linked in is a fantastic place for students, instructors, and universities to present themselves professionally via social media.
  4. Facebook has quickly become the social network site of choice by college students and an integral part of the “behind the scenes” college experience. Since its 2004 inception, virtually all colleges in the United States have designated college networks within the site. The adoption rates of Facebook in universities and colleges are remarkable; 85% of college students that have a college network within Facebook have adopted it (USA Today, 2011). Furthermore, Facebook is already used by 96% of first year college students. Facebook is equipped with bulletin boards, instant messaging, email, and the ability to post videos and pictures. Most notably, anyone can post information and collaborate within the system. Recently, Facebook has opened up development of downloadable applications, which can further supplement the educational functions of Facebook. Facebook creates a learning community and a vital component of education increasing both teacher-student and student-student interaction which will increase student motivation benefiting a student’s learning and classroom experience (Grant, 2008). Facebook is an important part of the plan to bring social networking tools to life within the proposed cycle.
  5. The advantages of implementing social media at the university far outweigh the disadvantages. One of the big advantages for students is their familiarity with social media sites. First, a site like Facebook is an excellent to support a students goal accomplishment. Next, a site like Linked in is an excellent site for job recommendations after a student graduates, a student can also connect with alumni. Social media sites are an excellent place to promote the university, especially to students who may not be able to travel to the university. The university can also promote college and student activities on the sites. Social media sites like Twitter are a great way to increase student participation. Other social media sites like You Tube provide a teacher with excellent tools to use in class and have videos on every subject. Last, a site like Facebook is an excellent way to promote student-teacher and student-student relationships and it provides an excellent collaboration tool for instructors (Grant, 2008).
  6. Along with the many advantages, social media does have some disadvantages. Perhaps the biggest objection to widespread use of social sites is the likelihood that kids will encounter irrelevant or even offensive material — a fear that many teachers say is overblown. Another objection to the use of social media is it provides the public with access to personal information. Social media sites are also vulnerable to spammers and hackers opening the door for security concerns. Social media may also provide students with study distractions, in fact studies show that students who spend more time on Facebook have slightly lower grades. According to a recent study the average Facebook user had a GPA of 3.0 to 3.5, while non-Facebook users had GPAs of 3.5 to 4.0 (Grant, 2008). Another concern with social media sites is online bullying and stacking of students or teachers. Sites like Facebook have also been attributed to student drama, and last there is the lack of privacy or anonymity (Grant, 2008).
  7. The system development life cycle (SDLC) will follow this project through from the initial idea to the point where it is a functional system. It is a core part of the methodology in defining this project. The SDLC will help the university implement their social media and networking technologies. The System Development is the interactive process which consists of the following stages: assessing needs, designing specifications, design/develop/test software, implement systems, support operations, and evaluate performance. The first step is assessing needs, it is important that one gets enough information for building the appropriate system during this step. Next, during system design one gets a rough image of the system and when done finalizes the design of the system. The next step is designing and developing the software, once coding is finished the coder corrects any flaws in the system. The next step is implementing the system, this is one of the most important phases and involves giving the system to the university. After the social media and marketing technologies are implemented at the university, the system operations must be supported and its performance evaluated by the information technologies department. The SDLC process will allow the university to know that the social media technologies are working according to plan and bring social networking to life within the cycle (Kay, 2002).
  8. There are clear advantages to using social media in online and distance education. With social media services, online teachers and learners can experience new and better types of communication and interaction, and they can be more connected to each other than ever before. Social media tools help online learners feel less isolated. With social media technologies advancing, distance education will continuously evolve with the trend. These technologies, if used correctly, will increase admissions of online and distance students at the university.
  9. In a recent USA today article, they interviewed Professor Sheninger, who is one of a growing number of educators who don't just tolerate social networking in school — he encourages it, often for educational purposes. He says sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube — long banned and roundly derided by many peers — actually push kids to do better work and pay attention to important issues such as audience, quality research and copyright laws (USA Today, 2012) .
  10. Social media networks help today’s students learn both in and out of the classroom, presently being literate means being digitally literate. It is naïve to think that kids raised online will respond to college the same way as previous generations. Without this college leveraging social media and networking, not only will we lose admissions, but students will become bored and disconnected. To be effective according to today’s standards, teachers need to acknowledge that today’s students have different preferences and learning needs than previous generations. Students are accustomed to accessibility and instant communication, and social media is an integral component. Teachers can take advantage of social media to engage students, connect with colleagues and prepare students for the future. (Charmigo, 2007).
  11. By utilizing the four major social networks (Twitter, Facebook, Linked in, and You tube) and adapting to todays students this institution will remain one of the top schools in the country. After implementing our SDLC plan, social networking at the university will encourage the collaboration of students and inspire an overall sense of community at the institution.
  12. The positive effects of social networking sites in education are profound. According to a recent study conducted by the University of Minnesota, students who are already engaging in social networking could benefit from incorporating it into curriculum (UM News, 2008). By incorporating the proposed SDLC for social networking this college will bring social networking tools to life within the cycle for both teachers and students. By utilizing these new social media technologies the instructors at this college will be able to increase students' engagement in their education, increase technological proficiency, contribute to a greater sense of collaboration in the classroom, while building their communication skills. Use of social networking will not only benefit the students, but it will also provide new opportunities for communication among teachers and administrators.
  13. Mr. University President: In conclusion, one must move ahead at this institution and implement this social media and networking plan.
