1. Service Children Support Network
The Service Children Support Network is delighted to announce a partnership project
with the Bath Spa University Widening Participation Team. This initiative will trial an
educational enrichment and support project for primary and secondary aged Service
children in schools in Wiltshire and Somerset in 2013. This programme will
geographically extend the current project in place with the University of Oxford in
Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
The aims of the project are to:
• Inspire intellectual, global and personal curiosity in pupils.
• Enrich and enhance students self- esteem, aspirations and hopes for the future.
• Introduce the language and context of Further and Higher Education and dispel any
misconceptions about university study and life.
• Give students a greater understanding of their progression through school.
This is done by delivering interesting, informative and relevant programmes to learners
between the ages of 10-18 both in schools and in the university. All workshops will be
delivered by members of staff from the university widening participation team with the
support of student ambassadors and all staff and students have an enhanced CRB
check.
The programme offers:
• A range of on-campus and in-school sessions for local primary schools aimed at raising
pupil awareness of and increasing aspiration towards future opportunities, including

who wish to go down this route.
• Career Detective sessions which offer curriculum based learning and a chance to
explore careers with Bath Spa University students.
• A range of on-campus and in–school sessions for local secondary schools.
• Road show events which consist of a carousel of multiple awareness-raising sessions
run both in-school and at the university.
• Support at careers fairs and parents evenings.
• Subject enrichment sessions which try to give both an idea of what a subject may be
like at Higher Education level as well as supporting the current curriculum learning.
These are run by current university lecturers and take the form of a mock university
lecture, a practical session or discussion seminar. These are usually offered on
campus.
• Skills support sessions led by current staff and students focusing on topics such as:
Revision skills; Writing skills; Research skills; Referencing skills; CV Writing; and
assisting with the UCAS application process.
