This document discusses an organization called On Our Radar that works to amplify the voices of marginalized communities by providing them with the tools and training to record and share their own stories. They address three main barriers - connectivity, capacity, and confidence. They run a communications hub to enable citizens to report via SMS, audio or photos. They provide citizen reporter training covering basics of journalism. They also provide one-on-one mentoring to build confidence. The result is a stream of powerful stories from these communities that offer new perspectives traditionally overlooked.

Through our work, we have identified three main

We run a crowdfunded communications hub which
enables citizens to report and receive real time
responses from editors via SMS, audio or photo.

We design and deliver citizen reporter
training, covering the basics of journalism
and eye witness coverage via SMS, chat
apps and voice.

8. There is an emphasis on verification, neutrality, and
information security.

9. Confidence
We back up learning with one-to-one
mentoring. We view and treat reporters as
consultants; local experts on their own
issues and environment.

11. Real issues, in real time.
The result of our work is a stream of
powerful stories straight from the source.
They offer a depth of insight and intimacy
which is traditionally overlooked or deemed
inaccessible.
