Nine days in NEW YORK CITY José A. Alcalde, IES La Arboleda
The Big Apple New York City, population over 8 million inhabitants, is made up of five boroughs : Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island. Manhattan is the most famous part where most tourists hang around.
Arrival Arriving in New York City is easy with three airports nearby, port, train stations, ferry terminals, etc. Over 55 million tourists visit NYC every year!! It is one of the top destinations worlwide.
Moving around Besides being Manhattan an island , everything is too far within walking distance so you need means of transport like the subway, taxis, buses, ferries, etc.
Finding your way Manhattan is basically divided into straight lines ( streets and avenues ) that criss cross the island.
Looking up... Most times you will be looking up the many skyscrapers the city has got. They seem endless. Most of them are offices.
… and looking down!! The views from atop these huge skyscrapers are also amazing!! Going up on their fast elevators can even hurt your ears.
Eating time They say you can find food from everywhere in the world around Hell's Kitchen (what a name!) But who can resist a typical hotdog sold in the street??
Eating time In general their diet is really bad as they take a lot of sugar and fat. Obesity is a serious problem and plain to see in the streets.
Shop till you drop Many people just go to NYC for a shopping spree, that is, to buy like crazy. 5 th Avenue is said to be the most exclusive shopping street in the world.
Showtime NYC has hundreds of shows, musicals, plays... to offer everyday to suit all tastes. Broadway is the center of this showbusiness.
The city that never sleeps The subway is open 24h like some stores (Apple store), laundromats, beauty parlors, diners, etc.
Museum Mile Around Central Park you can find some of the best museums in the world: MOMA, Guggenheim, Met, Natural History, etc.
Going green Central Park is the biggest park in NYC to jog, run, skate, play, nap, sunbathe, read, ride... And the smallest? The High Line. The old tracks of an elevated train turned into a avant-garde park.
Familiar sights When visiting NYC everything is so familiar thanks to TV, cinema... It is like going back to a place we knew well before!!
Multiethnic society NYC is the home of immigrants from all over the world. Schools, streets, restaurants, stores, parks... are proof of it.
Capital of the world? Some say New York City is the capital of the world... Maybe it is too exagerated but it is certainly one of them!!
