2. Oppositional Defiant Disorder is
an extreme case of defiance
seen as a pattern of negativistic,
hostile, and defiant behavior. (S.
SUTTON HAMILTON, 2008)
3. The Annoying Kid
“ Children with ODD will struggle in
school and in making and/or
keeping friends. It appears a child
with Oppositional defiant disorder
thrives on deliberately annoying
other people. They refuse to take
responsibility, blaming others for
their mistakes or misbehavior; they
are easily annoyed and act with
aggression toward peers and
adults. They often have trouble
academically.” (the Kids Mental Health
Organization staff 2009 )
4. Nature vs. Nurture
Nature
ODD(Oppositional
Defiant Disorder) has
been linked to abnormal
amounts of certain brain
chemicals, or
neurotransmitters.
(webmd)
Nurture
ODD(Oppositional
Defiant Disorder) can be
learned by having a
dysfunctional family, a
family history of mental
illnesses and/or substance
abuse, and inconsistent
discipline by parents may
contribute to the
development of behavior
disorders. (webmd)
5. Stick to your
guns!
Parents need to set limits with
the child and follow through by
giving the child consequences
and holding him or her
accountable. This is ultimately
the best thing for your child.
