MODULE 3 : DEALING WITH PEER PRESSURE

Learning Opportunities at BB:
Choose one of the following two case studies and answer the
questions that follow.

Case Study 1
Harry cherishes his relationship with his new friends in BB. He is amazed at how the
BB brings together Boys of different interests and character. At the same time, he
realises that he also has friends who are not in BB and that he needs to keep in contact
with them.

On one occasion after school, he was offered a cigarette by Chee Seng, whom he has
known since primary school. While he managed to turn him down, Chee Seng and the
rest started calling him “gutless” and they made fun of his participation in BB. They
said that “real men” do the things they did.

Identify the sources of the peer pressure in this situation. What do you think are the
outcomes of such peer pressure? How can you avoid negative outcomes?

Imagine you are in the situation described in the case.
What better way How will you use to manage this “peer pressure” better?

                                                                                    12

MODULE 3 : DEALING WITH PEER PRESSURE

Case Study 2
BB is so fun! Suddenly, Jason has so many friends and new responsibilities. It is
unlike primary school, when he was always with a close-knit group of friends with
similar hobbies. Now after school, he hangs out with his squad members. One of
them, Charles;, has many great consoles and PC games at home. Many of his squad
members enjoy these games and Jason has decided to join them for an hour each day
after school.

However, Jason discovers that one hour is simply not enough. As timedays goes by,
more and more of the his time is spent on games and going to shops which sell these
games. While Jason becomes very much closer to his friends, his schoolwork
deteriorates. However, while he is concerned about his school works but he dismisses
his fear and worries. He comforts himself that his friends do not indulge in petty theft
or do anything whilech breaks the law.

Identify the sources of the peer pressure in this situation. What do you think are the
outcomes of such peer pressure? How can you avoid negative outcomes?

Imagine you are in the situation described in the case.
How What better way will you use to manage this “peer pressure” better?

                                                                                    14
