Negative comments give you
the opportunity to show you
listen and care about
customers. Welcome them,
deal with them, you happy
customers will start to do it for
you.

Give it to the girl in accounts
Just because they likes Facebook
doesn’t mean that person is the
right person to represent your
company online. Give training,
prioritise community management
over everything else, give clear goals
and make sure she has the support
of the rest of the company.

We’ll never sell anything through social
media
Social media informs your target
audience about product benefits. It
builds desire. It has massive reach. It
can drive traffic to specific pages on
your site. Add value and track traffic.
Optimise landing pages. Build email
lists. Social media is part of the
funnel

The Sunday Times does not get
written on Saturday afternoon!
Without a content plan, content
production is hard work and falls to
one person. Use existing content,
repurpose email responses to
clients, interview clients, use subject
specialists in your business.

Don’t learn how to use the tools
You want your time to be effective
and efficient. Yet so many people
don’t take the time to learn how to
use the tools. The benefits are huge
so why wouldn’t you want to
capture them. Buy a book, watch
some YouTube videos, read a blog,
get some training.

Don’t track results effectively
Every digital activity has the
opportunity to be measured. Track
how many people click your links via
short URL tools like bit.ly and see
the amount of traffic it is bringing to
your site using Google Analytics.
Track results, evolve and reward
success in your team.

No clear or communicated goals
What will be the measure of
success? Whether in the board
room, for the community manager
or to encourage support from across
the company if you don’t have a set
of goals you will not know how close
you are to achieving them. No goals
= no direction

Staff not supported or incentivised
You want your team to participate.
Most likely they don’t. Consider
their role. How will the social
activities benefit them? If that need
is met then it will create success and
that will support the business.

to be excited about it if no-one
in your business is. Your cause
can underpin everything you
do.

Expand your reach. Your posting
your content up but if you don’t
optimise it using hashtags and
keywords and mentioning relevant
other people then you will only ever
be talking to the people who
currently follow you.

Sharing content at the wrong times
Think about when your audience is
online. Think journey to and from
work, lunch, evenings and
weekends. You may see huge
improvements. Use Buffer or
Hootsuite to schedule when you
can’t post manually.

Be sociable! It’s called social for
a reason you know. Bring a level
of personality that engages and
builds relationships. Dull in real
life is even more dull online.

share it once. Go back, find the
most popular and topical
content and recycle that

Poor use of email marketing
Don’t think email doesn’t work. If
yours don’t it means you are
sending out bad emails to people
who don’t want to read them. Build
a strong database off the back of
social activities and make great
emails.

chance that you have created
