Back to the Future: Current and Future Trends for Accessibility

Many organisations seem to fear that making their products accessible means dumbing them down: they might then work for everyone, but they will lose a lot of their pizzazz in the process. In this eAccess-13 presentation Jonathan Hassell presents the contrary view - that organisations that really look into the different needs of their disabled audiences often find this breaks them out of fixed positions, allowing them to take innovative leaps in product design. Using examples from the typewriter to the iPhone classic ‘Zombies, Run!’ and his own recent projects involving the Microsoft Kinect games controller, Jonathan guides you through a way of thinking about product development which is inclusive, creative and potentially very lucrative.

Accessibility innovation through gestural and sign-language interfaces

An estimated 1.3 billion people globally report limitations in their daily activities due to a disability. When it comes to the physical world, businesses have made progress in accommodating customers with disabilities. But in the digital world, websites lack basic accessibility features such as text alternatives describing images, proper heading level structures so individuals who are blind and use screen readers can understand the content on a webpage, or captioning for multimedia content for individuals who are deaf or are hard of hearing – let alone assistive technology for customers who have trouble using mobile devices due to dexterity limitations that arise from a variety of conditions. This presentation will discuss the challenges of adapting a water simulation interface, originally built to present technical information to experts, to new audiences that include high school students and rural populations of museum visitors. We can think about how new technology can -- and does -- change society. And how we can find inspiration in extreme needs that can change the our experience.

Accessibility as innovation

You went to a lot of trouble to put that content online. Plain language will help your audience find it, understand it and use it. Writing clearly makes information more accessible – and usable – for people who don’t read well, are reading in a second language, or are listening to the text. Plain language is accessibility for content

Fitting accessibility into an agile development cycle can be challenging. Often accessibility specialists are spread thin across agile squads and they have to deliver quickly into multiple sprint cycles. To meet the demand I looked to Lean UX principles and developed The Lean Accessibility Audit Workshop (LAAW). LAAW has two goals 1) detect accessibility problems quickly and 2) spread the accessibility knowledge. This is accomplished by training members of agile squads on accessibility basics, evaluation methods and tools. The training evolves into an accessibility audit as squad members collaboratively capture, share and prioritize findings. The LAWW method compresses a 6-8 week evaluation process into a 2 weeks process while training squad members to detect and avoid accessibility issues in the future. And it can be pretty fun. This session will explain how to bring LAAW to your organization.

Let's go zero to wireframe with wearables! Wearables can be tough to understand and design for, especially if you don’t have experience with the hardware. In one evening we’ll get you up to speed on wearable technology. 2009: Social inclusion in a Digital Age

In the spring of 2007, I co-lead a project that explored Internet access on mobile devices. At that time, uptake for mobile Internet content in the U.S. was dismally low. Recruiting participants that engaged with the mobile Internet for more than a few minutes once or twice a week proved extremely challenging. In order to collect the type of data needed to inform the design process and improve the user experience, we designed a PC Internet deprivation research study. Eight lucky participants used only their mobile phone to access the Internet for four days. I co-wrote this case-study about the project with Mirjana Spasojevic of the Nokia Research Lab in Palo Alto and Pekka Isomursu of Nokia Design and presented it recently at CHI in Florence, Italy. The case study describes details of the research methodology as well as design insights and implications for development of mobile applications and services. A lot has changed in the year since this study; the release of the iPhone in June of 2007 and Google’s Android platform in November 2007 were watershed moments for the mobile Internet – improving the experience and opening up opportunities for usage that simply didn’t exist before. Despite these advances, I still believe most Internet experiences on mobile devices are broken and compromised, overburdened by interaction models and metaphors from the PC that simply don’t work on small devices. Yet so much of how we understand the Internet – and computing – is based on the PC legacy. What has been exciting me most about mobile these days is that exact challenge… figuring out what metaphors and models to keep and what to leave behind as we try to prism Internet content through a myriad of devices.

The past, present and future of accessibility - niche to nice to normal

Some of our key accessibility ideas are back to front. The most important aspect of the accessibility of images isn't 'alt-text'. The number of disabled people who use assistive technologies is tiny compared with those who don't. And for many people video is more accessible than text, not less accessible. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
