RENOVATION AND EXPANSION
The revision and expansion of campus canteen and campus activity center
Academic work February - April 2014
Tutor : Zhou Lin
Renovation and Expansion of Sha Tang Yuan Dining Hall of the campus canteen, attempted to be
transformed from the original dining hall to a comprehensive campus activity center. Based on learnig
from master Yang Tingbao, the designer of Sha Tang Yuan, it is required to make function planning
according to needs of the present, and to grasp the principles and methods of designing compund
functional of the buildings.
The existed design of the campus canteen such as the façade, the roof, and the structres can`t be
remove or demolish. Its such a challenge for the architect to maintain the present principles design that
was build before. The study design methods are to combine between old structures with new structures
as well as creating new space idea, function, and site. Also study the procedure of analysis of the site
within the campus complex environment, and the relationship between the old buildings and the new
buildings.

THE COURTYARD HOUSE
A private house for a single Family
Academic work September – November 2012
Tutor : Yu Gang
The courtyard house for a single family is located in Mei Hua Yuan, old
district of nanjing. Located in old urban area of the city was a challenge
for the architect to make the design worth for a living. Since the concept
is house with courtyards, the architect have to design the relationship or
the interaction between the functions, spaces, and the courtyard. Also
learning the space design under the site restrict and the design method
of coordinate the relationship between inner space and outer space.
The given “L” shape of the site have to reconsider
the relationship between the house, courtyard and
the sunlight direction between each spaces. So the
architect design three spaces of courtyard in each
corner of the house so that the functions of inner
space have strong relationship with the courtyard.
Also providing the transparent boundaries for the
groundfloor to have the through connections with
the courtyard.

GREEN DESIGN COMMUNITY CENTER
The Mix use building for people around Nanjing Jiefang gate, near Xuanwu lake
Academic work April – June 2013
Tutor : Dong Ling
The site is located near the city wall of Nanjing. The surrounding area are apartments and the
small lake, its good way for the building the build a new community for the site since before the
area is just old district. “Brought back” the community is the main purpose of the building to
gather everyone around such as the people who lived in the apartments. Since in people in China
are like to use their time in the outside to communicate with each other and also especially for the
family with the kids. So that the community center that mixed with lots of public functions such as
restaurant, library, squares, etc,, can be the one point of activity center.
The basic “triangle” shape was given for the
site. Creating the big square facing through
the lake for the outside activity and
surrounded by the functions. While the south
part is the main street of the site providing
with the access and entrance to the
Community. To make the building accessible
is the main concern of the design since
located in the open community to make
easier access from one place to another.

COMMUNITY SERVICE CENTER FOR ELDERLY
The living and activity center for old people, Nanjing, China
Academic work September – November 2013
Tutor : Xia Bing
The main purpose of the building is to design a community service center for the
elderly in high-density urban city. To design a new community for mostly of them are
elderly people in an existing residential area in the city center to serve the
surrounding. Since most of the surrounding buildings are housing, the new building
need to consider the influence of sunshine, and meet the important thing of
accessible requirements. To keep the activity that had been there for many years, and
maintaining the old lifestyle of the elderly that bring to the design. For this project, its
is required to focus on the interactive relationship between the building and
surrounding, the usage and space, organizaing circulation to create a smart public
space as well
Creating the outdoor open space blended
with the greens, as well as the inner
courtyard to create relationship between
spaces more convinient since the elderly
that live in it. Accessibility from other part
of the building to another, and the back
open space for the outside activity either
who live in there or from another
community. At last, the living space must
quite and comfortable and combining with
activity center that public and spiritful.

Academic work March – June 2015
Tutor : Zhang Xian
The site is located at ChangZhou, Jiangsu, China which the area can be
found 3 ponds at different places. The site itself consist of apartments
which the occupier are farmers. The purpose of the design are to create
indoor or outdoor public spaces consist of public function that can be
occupied by the farmers and their family.
51 52
The site of the construction is to choose 1 out of 3 ponds that
existed in the area. The main objectives is to design a
communty center space which consist of boxes 3m width x 6m
long and should be using lightweight material and
prefabricated in the factory. Also to design outdoor landscape
which incircuit to the site that we’re chosen. The design also
should consider about how the 3m x 6m prefabricated boxex
can be easily install and uninstall. Also consider about the
materials of the building envelope such as insulated panel that
can provide comfort both in summer and winter.
Section A-A253 54
Creating similarities L-shape and 2 boxes in the middle to naturally creates open courtyard in between the building. Creating options for
people, while the inner courtyard connect to the building and the back platform connect to the pond. The form come from a basic rectangular
shape 6 x 3 meter and 3 x 4.5 meter. Adding 3 x 3 spaces at the end of the L shape to form outside space while still connected to the building.

community must be age-restricted or age-qualified,
residents must be partially or fully retired, and the
community offers shared services or amenities.
The purpose are to build a peaceful, comfortable,
convenient Centre with various health service area
according to the physiological needs and
behaviour characteristics of the elderly and the

Traffic organisation: entry at

Functional planning:
residential, catering,
health, fitness, shopping,

entertainment. To use the
open space between
buildings and buildings’
surrounding for sports
such as croquet,
badminton, taichi, or other
sports for elderly. To create
a hall for religious activity,
that can be used weekly

The arts and culture field encompasses the performing, visual, and fine arts, as well as applied arts including architecture
and graphic design; crafts; film, digital media and video; humanities and historic preservation; literature; folklife; and
other creative activities. The arts alone can be classified into 13 categories: acting, announcing, architecture, fine art,
directing, animation, dancing and choreography, design, entertainment and performance, music and singing,
photography, production, and writing. Culture can be defined as the arts as well as the intangible shared beliefs, values,
and practices of a community . "Creativity" is sometimes used to describe the common elements of arts and culture, but
this term encompasses other fields as well. We use the Bureau of Labor Statistics definition of creativity, which
encompasses the development, design, or creation of new applications, ideas, relationships, systems or products,
including artistic contributions as a whole, many forms of arts and culture naturally manifest as aspects of daily human
activity . arts and culture contribute specifically to strengthening cultural values and preserving heritage and history also
building community character and sense of place.

GREEN DESIGN COMMUNITY CENTER The Mix use building for people around Nanjing Jiefang gate, near Xuanwu lake Academic work April – June 2013 Tutor : Dong Ling The site is located near the city wall of Nanjing. The surrounding area are apartments and the small lake, its good way for the building the build a new community for the site since before the area is just old district. “Brought back” the community is the main purpose of the building to gather everyone around such as the people who lived in the apartments. Since in people in China are like to use their time in the outside to communicate with each other and also especially for the family with the kids. So that the community center that mixed with lots of public functions such as restaurant, library, squares, etc,, can be the one point of activity center. The basic “triangle” shape was given for the site. Creating the big square facing through the lake for the outside activity and surrounded by the functions. While the south part is the main street of the site providing with the access and entrance to the Community. To make the building accessible is the main concern of the design since located in the open community to make easier access from one place to another. 33 34 绿色设计社区中心
